Nine species ofByssoloma Trevisan (Pilocarpaceae) are reported from a collection of foliicolous lichens from Zaire, and includeB. murinum sp. n. In addition,B. usambarense sp. n. is described from adjacent Tanzania. A determination key is provided to all the known African species, and each species is briefly characterized.     

Selection in regulated autocatalytic systems

The paper deals with problems involved in the formation of stable structures in a system, in which processes typical of bimolecular autocatalytical reactions occur when the respective components are directly influenced from the outside. Such systems can arise in biochemical, biological and ecological sphere (see, e.g. Glansdorff and Prigogine 1971; Nicolis and Prigogine 1977; Haken 1977; 1980). It has been shown that a regions of so-called subcritical and supercritical regulation exist, manifested by the fact that the given system component would either persist or disappear. The selection of processes consists in the fact that generally only one solution can be realized from N alternatives as a stable state having the nature of a stable node, or a stable focus. When one of the components is supplied to the system from the exterior in a supercritical amount, the system can be "forced" to produce only that single substance. Thus, the system studied can be considered as a model of a biological filter. The results can also be applied in ecology and biotechnology.     

Monoclonal antibody-defined antigens of human prostate cancer cell line PC3

Summary Over 600 hybridomas were derived from the immunization of mice with live cells and aqueous extracts of the human prostatic carcinoma cell line PC3. A total of 26 hybridomas with restricted reactivities were selected, subcloned and antibodies tested on a variety of tumor and normal cells. Seven monoclonal antibodies showed reactivity for prostate cancer and other tumor cell lines, including breast carcinomas. Three of the antibodies obtained after immunization with live cells reacted with live cells only and three of the four antibodies obtained after immunization with cell extract reacted with cell extracts and spent culture media. The fourth antibody in the latter group was reactive only in the immunoperoxidase staining assay. Antibody PrS5 recognized a 90,000 molecular weight molecule from ¹²⁵I-surface-labeled cells in immunoprecipitation analysis. Antibodies PrE3 and PrD8 detected a nonacid glycolipid pentasaccharide from PC3 cells and meconium, and a glycoprotein of 115,000 molecular weight from ¹²⁵I-surface-labeled red blood cells. The similar patterns of reactivity in RIAs and antigen analysis suggest that antibodies PrE3 and PrD8 recognize the same molecule. The results emphasize the usefulness of immunohistochemistry in the testing of monoclonal antibodies and the impact of the form in which the antigen is presented on the resultant antibody specificity     

On the dynamics of the mass mortality of Diadema antillarum in Barbados

Widespread mortality of the black sea urchin Diadema antillarum occurred in the Caribbean in 1983; beginning in Panama in January, and having its major impact at Barbados in September. Mortality on ten reefs surveyed in Barbados was 93.2%, with the highest being 99.9% and the lowest 86.9%. Mortality on each reef was independent of the pre-mortality density on the reef. Urchins with test diameters between 20 and 40 mm were more severely affected than smaller or larger urchins. Populations on reefs exposed to incoming oceanic water suffered heavier mortality than those on protected reefs. Mean size of urchins was smallest on high density reefs. This may indicate a negative effect of density on urchin growth. At post-mortality densities, urchins may grow faster and reach sexual maturity sooner.     

Effect of labuctril 25 and three other herbicides on wild soil isolates and mutant strains of streptomycetes

Labuctril 25 (3,5-dibromo-4-hydroxybenzonitrile, LAB) at concentrations up to 100μg/mL inhibits effectively growth, morphology, and pigmentation of most soil streptomycete isolates grown under laboratory conditions. Oxytril CM (OXT), Basagran (BAS) and Faneron 50 WP (FAN) applied at the same concentrations had no detectable effect on growth of substrate mycelium but suppressed both aerial mycelium and pigment formation, the effectivity decreasing in the order OXT—BAS—FAN. The LAB-sensitivity of mutant strains was markedly higher as compared with that of the soil isolates. A wild strain resistant to 100–400μg of LAB per mL (depending on the medium composition) was isolated. It was capable of supporting the growth and development of sensitive strains on the LAB-containing medium. A stimulatory effect of low doses of LAB (10–20μg/mL) on the antibiotic activity of streptomycetes was observed.     

Cholinesterase activity in some species of theAllium genus

In partly purified protein complexes obtained from 22 species of theAllium genus and 6 cultivars ofAllium cepa the activity of cholinesterases was detected and measured using the method of Ellman et al. The degree of its inhibition with 10^-4 M neostigmine was also tested. It was found that the activity of cholinesterase differed in individual species up to two hundred times, while the differences in the inhibitory activity of 10^-4 M neostigmine occurred only in a few cases. Individual sections and cultivars could not be characterized on the basis of the differences in the activities of the cholinesterases. Of all the sections that ofPhyllodolon shows the highest average activity. In the case of the tested cultivars distinctly the lowest activity was observed in cv. Kastická. The values of the enzymatic activity measured by Ellman’s method in this plant material include the activity of specific and unspecific cholinesterases and the part uninhibitable by neostigmine.     

Developmental changes in gene expression during pollen differentiation and maturation inNicotiana tabacum L

Total and polysome-bound ribosomes and the uptake and incorporation of³H-uridine and¹⁴C-leucine were examined in dividing microspores and in pollen grains isolated from anthers of 6 different developmental stages. Direct evidence was obtained that the formation of cytoplasm of the vegetative cell following microspore division is related to a rapid activation of RNA and protein synthesis and of ribosomes in differentiating pollen. Total ribosomes associated with gametophytic programme rose about 10times and the process of differentiation was accompanied by a rapid increase in uptake capacity of pollen grains for both uridine and leucine. Pollen development after cytoplasm synthesis and starch deposition continued by pollen maturation, which was characterized by a decline in RNA synthesis, dissociation of polysomes and by a further rise of transport activity of pollen grain wall for exogenous substrates, indicating probable pollen adaptation for utilization of metabolites from the degenerating tapetal cytoplasm.
