Preparation and some properties of stable and carbon-14 and tritium-labeled short-chain aliphatic hydroxamic acids

A simple and safe procedure has been described for the preparation of short-chain aliphatic hydroxamic acids in quantities as large as 1 mole and as small as 0.01 mole. The procedure is equally suitable for the preparation of isotopically labeled hydroxamates, as has been demonstrated in the case of 1-¹⁴C-acetohydroxamic acid and ³H-acetohydroxamic acid. Some physical and chemical characteristics, including infrared spectra of formo-, aceto-, propiono-, and isobutyro-hydroxamic acids prepared by this method have been described.     

The Significance of Pronounced Left Axis Deviation in the Presence of Right Bundle Branch Block

The histories of 117 patients with left axis deviation and complete right bundle branch block (rbbb) on the electrocardiogram were reviewed for evidence of clinical cardiac disease, hypertension or emphysema. One hundred fifty-four patients with complete right bundle branch block alone served as controls. The incidence of coronary artery disease (myocardial infarction or angina) was significantly greater in the group with pronounced left axis deviation; the other factors evaluated showed no significant difference between the two groups. Pronounced left axis deviation of the mean qrs axis is associated with a high prevalence of clinical coronary artery disease. The presence of complete right bundle branch block does not alter their relationship. Some patients with complete rbbb, or with rbbb and pronounced left axis deviation, have no clinical evidence of heart disease.     

Dupuytren's Contracture—Etiology and Principles of Treatment

Although Dupuytren''s contracture was first described more than 300 years ago, the cause is not yet certainly known. It is only agreed that the disease process affecting the palmar fascia is most commonly found in older-aged males of Caucasian descent.Conservative or non-surgical treatment is usually ineffective. Surgical treatment includes fasciotomy, partial fasciectomy and total fasciectomy. Fasciotomy is indicated for localized disease or for patients with medical conditions which preclude more extensive operation. Subtotal fasciectomy with or without skin graft is the most commonly employed procedure. Total palmar fasciectomy is seldom indicated. Improved function of the hand can be anticipated after adequate surgical intervention.     

Relationship Between Amino Sugars and Meat Microbial Quality

The amino sugar content of spoiling beef increased with the microbial count and appeared to be responsible for the increased hydration capacity of spoiled meats.     

Computer-assisted Follow-up Register for the North-East of Scotland

An automated follow-up register for the detection of iatrogenic thyroid disease has been established as a joint venture between the general practitioners in the north-east of Scotland and the thyroid clinic of Aberdeen General Hospitals.The data-processing operations in the system are handled by an International Computers Limited 4/50 computer. Patients are followed up at predetermined intervals and the system has been designed to process, screen, and store clinical and biochemical follow-up data and report results to the patients, general practitioners, and the hospital records department.     

Some metabolites of 1-bromobutane in the rabbit and the rat

1. Rabbits and rats dosed with 1-bromobutane excrete in urine, in addition to butylmercapturic acid, (2-hydroxybutyl)mercapturic acid, (3-hydroxybutyl)mercapturic acid and 3-(butylthio)lactic acid. 2. Although both species excrete both the hydroxybutylmercapturic acids, only traces of the 2-isomer are excreted by the rabbit. The 3-isomer has been isolated from rabbit urine as the dicyclohexylammonium salt. 3. 3-(Butylthio)lactic acid is formed more readily in the rabbit; only traces are excreted by the rat. 4. Traces of the sulphoxide of butylmercapturic acid have been found in rat urine but not in rabbit urine. 5. In the rabbit about 14% and in the rat about 22% of the dose of 1-bromobutane is excreted in the form of the hydroxymercapturic acids. 6. Slices of rat liver incubated with S-butylcysteine or butylmercapturic acid form both (2-hydroxybutyl)mercapturic acid and (3-hydroxybutyl)mercapturic acid, but only the 3-hydroxy acid is formed by slices of rabbit liver. 7. S-Butylglutathione, S-butylcysteinylglycine and S-butylcysteine are excreted in bile by rats dosed with 1-bromobutane. 8. Rabbits and rats dosed with 1,2-epoxybutane excrete (2-hydroxybutyl)mercapturic acid to the extent of about 4% and 11% of the dose respectively. 9. The following have been synthesized: N-acetyl-S-(2-hydroxybutyl)-l-cysteine [(2-hydroxybutyl)mercapturic acid] and N-acetyl-S-(3-hydroxybutyl)-l-cysteine [(3-hydroxybutyl)mercapturic acid] isolated as dicyclohexylammonium salts, N-toluene-p-sulphonyl-S-(2-hydroxybutyl)-l-cysteine, S-butylglutathione and N-acetyl-S-butylcysteinyl-glycine ethyl ester.
