Intraspinal Tumors in Children

Thirty cases of intraspinal neoplasms occurring during the first two decades of life are reviewed. Histologic examination showed 13 of these to be astrocytomas, 6 neuroblastomas, 5 sarcomas, 3 ependymomas, 2 neurofibromas and 1 a schwannoma. Orthopedic deformities developed or worsened in 60 percent of patients surviving longer than a year after diagnosis. In five patients some form of endocrine deficiency developed after irradiation. For treatment of radiosensitive extradural malignant lesions, biopsy followed by irradiation is advocated.     

Presence of a small plasmid in clinical isolates of Streptococcus pneumoniae

Twenty-four of 63 enteric Gram-negative organisms (38.1%) which were isolated from 35 apparently healthy Nigerian students were found to have low trimethoprim resistance (MIC less than 1000 mg/l). These isolates were also found to be resistant to several other antibiotics and trimethoprim resistance was found to be transferable from 15 (62.5%) of the trimethoprim resistant organisms into E. coli EC 1005. It is likely that the high percentage of trimethoprim resistance encountered in this study is related to the high rate of resistance transfer which was observed.     

Metabolism of caffeine by mouse liver microsomes: GSH or cytosol causes a shift in products from 1, 3, 7-trimethylurate to a substituted diaminouracil

Incubation of [¹⁴C] caffeine with hepatic microsomes from male AKR/J mice resulted in the formation of several metabolites including 1, 3, 7-trimethylurate and 6-amino-5-(N-formylmethyl-amino)-1, 3-dimethyluracil. These two compounds comprised about 60% of products and are major urinary metabolites in several animals. When cytosol was included during incubation, there was a 14-fold increase in yield of the uracil at the expense of the urate; the combination of the two metabolites remained about 60% of total products. Cytosol alone was catalytically inert. Glutathione and other sulfhydryl compounds reproduced the effect of cytosol, and the action of cytosol was accounted for quantitatively by its sulfhydryl content. We propose that an oxidized intermediate of caffeine en route to trimethylurate is reduced by glutathione to the ring-opened uracil derivative.     

Changes in Calcium Reserves in Breeding Lesser Snow Geese (Chen caerulescens caerulescens)

Calcium and fat reserves of the femur medullary bone were examined in sexually mature lesser snow geese (Chen caerulescens caerulescens) collected during the 1974–1975 season. In females, femur calcium and fat levels increased by 80 and 30%, respectively, during the spring migration, much of the increase taking place while the birds staged in southwestern Manitoba and North Dakota prior to their departure for the breeding area. In males. femur calcium levels showed no seasonal change but femur fat increased in a manner similar to that found in the females, although the increase was not as great (17%). In the females, femur fat content fell by 40% during egg-laying whereas in males a decrease in femur lipid was not evident until incubation was well underway. Femur calcium levels in females declined during egg production and early incubation, showing a 56% decrease over spring migratory levels, indicating that dietary calcium intake was limited during the nesting period. However, the low femur calcium levels in birds collected during the spring were not significantly different from those of wintering birds, suggesting that no calcium deficiencies were apparent. Plasma calcium levels in males remained relatively constant throughout the year, although there was some elevation in May. Plasma calcium levels in the females increased almost threefold during egg laying and returned to pre-laying levels during incubation. Medullary bone was evident only in reproducing females and appeared during spring migration, concomitant with increased femur weight, fat and calcium content. Medullary bone degradation commenced during the first week of incubation and no medullary bone was in evidence by molt. Calcium reserves of medullary bone accounted for only 17.2% of the calcium required for eggshell production, suggesting that. at least during the laying period, the female must depend on some exogenous source, perhaps from grit or brackish water.     

Prostaglandin-sepharose: Application to the purification of bovine lung 15 (S) -hydroxyprostaglandin dehydrogenase

Prostaglandins E₁, F_1α and A₂ were covalently joined to the surface of Sepharose as carboxamide linkages. The insolubilized prostaglandins were shown to function effectively in the purification of 15(S) -hydroxyprostaglandin dehydrogenase.     

Molecular Serotyping of Escherichia coli O26:H11

Serotyping is the foundation of pathogenic Escherichia coli diagnostics; however, few laboratories have this capacity. We developed a molecular serotyping protocol that targets, genetically, the same somatic and flagellar antigens of E. coli O26:H11 used in traditional serotyping. It correctly serotypes strains untypeable by traditional methods, affording primary laboratories serotyping capabilities.
