This paper examines the history of sex ratio theory and the effects of multiple variables on individual and population sex ratios. It also provides examples where plants have been used to test major predictions of sex ratio theory. Then, using over 200 studies from the literature, dioecious plant species are categorized based on their life form, pollination agent, fruit dispersal agent, and sex ratio. A loglinear analysis is used to look at possible correlations between the sex ratio of a population and other life history characteristics. These data are used to examine the predictions made by De Jong et al. (Journal of Evolutionary Biology 15:7, 2002), that relative pollen and seed dispersal distances can be used to predict sex ratio bias. Despite the limited sample size, strong relationships are still observed. 93% of insect pollinated dioecious vines that have biotically dispersed fruit have male-biased sex ratios. Conversely, 61% of shrubs that are wind pollinated and have abiotic fruit dispersal have female-biased sex ratios.  相似文献

Sesame Utilization in China: New Archaeobotanical Evidence from Xinjiang. A cache of sesame (Sesamum indicum L.) seeds, discovered in the Thousand Buddha Grottoes at Boziklik, Turpan, China, dating to ca. 700 years before present (BP), is hard evidence of their use in China since that time. Morphological and anatomical features suggest a white sesame cultivar. The sizeable quantity unearthed implies that sesame was a valued commodity that could provision the monks and enrich the diet of ancient inhabitants as an oil source.  相似文献

Early to late Pliocene sedimentary strata present across the northern Bass Strait hinterland, southeastern Australia yield extensive fossil proxy data relevant to the interpretation of high sea level coastal palaeomorphology. Within the Pliocene Whalers Bluff Formation exposed in coastal cliffs near the township of Portland, Victoria, marine microfossil faunas delineate two broad cycles of deposition. Both these sedimentary cycles are bound below by unconformity surfaces. Within the lower sedimentary cycle, a basal stress-tolerant (low diversity) marginal marine microfossil fauna devoid of ostracods and suggestive of bottom-water hypoxia, is succeeded by a diverse shallow marine ostracod fauna dominated by stenohaline species indicative of a sheltered (but open) oceanic embayment. This lower sedimentary cycle has an early Pliocene (Zanclean) age. Equivalent shallow marine (e.g. coastal embayment) deposits occur broadly across the coastal hinterland of southeastern Australia—reflecting the generally higher global sea levels of this time. The upper cycle in the cliff exposures at Portland is late Pliocene (Piacenzian) in age. Equivalent deposits across the Bass Strait hinterland are restricted to former incised river valley settings. Euryhaline estuarine/coastal lagoon Ostracoda are present throughout the upper cycle in the Portland cliffs. These are associated with a low diversity microfauna at the base of the upper cycle and a high diversity microfauna towards the top of the cycle. Early Pliocene coastal marine deposits can be distinguished from late Pliocene coastal marine deposits across the northern Bass Strait hinterland on the basis of the presence or absence of certain open marine (‘stenohaline’) ostracod species.  相似文献

The hypothesis that nitrate versus phosphate regulates the coastal primary production has been assessed at different time scales in the northwest Alboran Sea. Time series of temperature, salinity, nutrients and chlorophyll a obtained at three stations located off Málaga city (the greatest coastal urban core along the Alboran Sea shoreline) from 1992 to 2006 have been analysed. At the decadal scale, temperature increased linearly while salinity decreased. These changes were related to a shift in the wind regime suggesting that coastal upwelling became steadily weaker. In contrast to phosphate, nitrate was positively correlated with salinity at the seasonal scale and decreased linearly from 1992 to 2006. Seasonal and decadal changes in chlorophyll a were correlated with nitrate (and uncorrelated with phosphate). However, non-regular variability in chlorophyll a was correlated with phosphate. Consequently, the results demonstrate that nitrate controls the phytoplankton biomass at the inter-annual scale while both nitrate and phosphate do so at a shorter time scale. The Bay of Málaga receives elevated entries of domestic waste waters that release high loads of phosphate compared to nitrate. Our analysis indicates that the expected impact of this pollution on chlorophyll a at the inter-annual scale is reduced in comparison with the effects of atmospheric forcing.  相似文献

The objective of this experiment was to investigate the effects of supplemental chromium picolinate (CrPic) and chromium histidinate (CrHis) on nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-??B p65) and nuclear factor (erythroid-derived 2)-like 2 (Nrf2) signaling pathway in diabetic rat brain. Nondiabetic (n?=?45) and diabetic (n?=?45) male Wistar rats were either not supplemented or supplemented with CrPic or CrHis via drinking water to consume 8???g elemental chromium (Cr) per day for 12?weeks. Diabetes was induced by streptozotocin injection (40?mg/kg i.p., for 2?weeks) and maintained by high-fat feeding (40?%). Diabetes was associated with increases in cerebral NF-??B and 4-hydroxynonenal (4-HNE) protein adducts and decreased in cerebral nuclear factor of kappa light polypeptide gene enhancer in B cells inhibitor, alpha (I??B??) and Nrf2 levels. Both Cr chelates were effective to decrease levels of NF-??B and 4-HNE protein adducts and to increase levels of I??B?? and Nrf2 in the brain of diabetic rats. However, responses of these increases and decreases were more notable when Cr was supplemented as CrHis than as CrPic. In conclusion, Cr may play a protective role in cerebral antioxidant defense system in diabetic subjects via the Nrf2 pathway by reducing inflammation through NF-??B p65 inhibition. Histidinate form of Cr was superior to picolinate form of Cr in reducing NF-??B expression and increasing Nrf2 expression in the brain of diabetic rats.  相似文献

Shoot-tips of Rabdosia rubescens, excised from in vitro-grown proliferating shoots that were cold-hardened at 5°C for 3 weeks, were encapsulated in alginate beads. Subsequently, these were precultured in a mixture of 0.4 M sucrose and 2 M glycerol for 1 h and then desiccated with silica-gel to about 21% water content prior to freezing in liquid nitrogen. After thawing, about 85% of cryopreserved shoot-tips grew into true-to-type shoots and with enhanced rooting capacity. Eight single-bud sibling lines were used to assess genetic stability of these encapsulated shoot-tips. When the relative DNA content was measured by flow cytometry (FCM), no changes were observed between controls and cryopreserved shoots. Using a sequence-related amplified polymorphism (SRAP) assay, it was observed that seven out of eight cryopreserved lines showed identical banding patterns; while the eighth line displayed an absent band, amounting to a low variance rate of 0.01%. These findings suggested that it was necessary to monitor the genetic stability of recovered cryopreserved R. rubescens shoots.  相似文献

Straighthead is a physiological disorder of rice causing sterility. A particular characteristic of straighthead is panicles that remain upright because of the light weight of the unfilled grains, the hulls of which may be distorted into a crescent or parrot-beak shape. Monosodium methanearsenate (MSMA) was used in this study, to induce straighthead-like sterility symptoms in rice. Rating scales were developed to quantify the specific symptoms of straighthead (grain distortion, rachis curvature, panicle exsertion, and panicle weight), which were used to examine MSMA-induced straighthead in a greenhouse setting. Different rice cultivars were surveyed for their specific responses to MSMA, to identify targets for focus in rice breeding that differ in their responses. MSMA altered the pattern of anthesis so that flowering continued for a longer period of time although the initial flowering time and total panicle number were not affected. Early flowering panicles were less affected by MSMA than later flowering panicles. While all previous studies of MSMA-induced straighthead used MSMA applied at or before planting, a time course of MSMA application showed a time point for application at about the V4 (4-leaf) stage when the sterility symptoms were reduced and then an interval of time from about V6 to V8 when applications resulted in symptoms more severe than application at planting. A greenhouse temperature study demonstrated that lowering the temperature of the roots reduced the severity of the responses. MSMA is valuable as a trigger to induce a set of sterility symptoms so that the underlying physiological, biochemical, and genetic causes can be studied, and which may have implications for other sterility conditions.  相似文献

We investigated the role of serotonin (5HT) and dopamine (DA) in the regulation of olfactory system function and odor-evoked tentacle movements in the snail Helix. Preparations of the posterior tentacle (including sensory pad, tentacular ganglion and olfactory nerve) or central ganglia with attached posterior tentacles were exposed to cineole odorant and the evoked responses were affected by prior application of 5HT or DA or their precursors 5-hydroxytryptophan (5HTP) and l-DOPA, respectively. 5HT applications decreased cineole-evoked responses recorded in the olfactory nerve and hyperpolarized the identified tentacle retractor muscle motoneuron MtC3, while DA applications led to the opposite changes. 5HTP and l-DOPA modified MtC3 activity comparable to 5HT and DA action. DA was also found to decrease the amplitude of spontaneous local field potential oscillations in the procerebrum, a central olfactory structure. In vivo studies demonstrated that injection of 5HTP in freely moving snails reduced the tentacle withdrawal response to aversive ethyl acetate odorant, whereas the injection of l-DOPA increased responses to “neutral” cineole and aversive ethyl acetate odorants. Our data suggest that 5HT and DA affect the peripheral (sensory epithelium and tentacular ganglion), the central (procerebrum), and the single motor neuron (withdrawal motoneuron MtC3) level of the snail’s nervous system.  相似文献
