Researchers consider predation rates by terrestrial animals to be lower in the case of arboreal primates, particularly among
large-bodied species. We recorded the consumption of black-and-gold howlers (Alouatta caraya) by cougars (Puma concolor) as evidence of predation on an island of the upper Paraná River. We collected and processed fecal samples of the felid in
2004 and 2005. We identified items in the laboratory by comparison with museum specimens. We considered each species in a
fecal sample as a single occurrence. Based on analysis of the cuticle scale pattern, we identified the felid as cougar. Howlers
occurred in 4 out of the 8 fecal samples (40% of the occurrences). In addition to howlers, we also recorded 5 occurrences
of agouti (Dasyprocta azarae; 50%) and a small unidentified sigmodontine rodent (10%). The abundance of howlers and the low forest canopy in a successional
vegetation might have facilitated the predation of the large primates by a primarily terrestrial predator. The versatility
of cougars is corroborated by the consumption of prey species that were abundant in the region and that were available in

Experimental objectives. Because myocardial infarct is associated with overactivation of brain angiotensin II (ANG II) and vasopressin (AVP) V1a receptors we decided to determine whether AT1 and V1a receptors-mediated effects of ANG II and AVP interact in central cardiovascular control during the post-infarct state. Four groups of infarcted and four groups of sham-operated conscious rats entered the study. Results. In the infarcted rats cerebroventricular infusion of AT1 (AT1ANT, losartan) and V1a antagonist {V1aANT,d(CH(2))(5)[Tyr(Me)(2)Ala-NH(2)(9)]VP} and combined infusion of both these compounds performed 4 weeks after induction of the infarct significantly and comparably reduced mean arterial blood pressure (MABP) in comparison to control experiments (artificial cerebrospinal fluid infusion). In the sham rats MABP was not affected by any of the infusions. In control experiments MABP and HR responses to an alarming air jet stress were significantly higher in the infarcted than in the sham rats. Both responses were normalized with the same effectiveness by administration of AT1ANT, V1aANT and AT1ANT+V1aANT. In the sham rats administration of these compounds did not affect MABP and HR responses to stress. Conclusion: The results provide evidence for interaction of AT1 and V1a receptors-mediated effects of ANG II and AVP in the central cardiovascular control during the post-infarct state. 相似文献

Cytokinins are a class of plant hormones that regulate the cell cycle and diverse developmental and physiological processes. Several compounds have been identified that antagonize the effects of cytokinins. Based on structural similarities and competitive inhibition, it has been assumed that these anticytokinins act through a common cellular target, namely the cytokinin receptor. Here, we examined directly the possibility that various representative classical anticytokinins inhibit the Arabidopsis cytokinin receptors CRE1/AHK4 (cytokinin response 1/Arabidopsis histidine kinase 4) and AHK3 (Arabidopsis histidine kinase 3). We show that pyrrolo[2,3-d]pyrimidine and pyrazolo[4,3-d]pyrimidine anticytokinins do not act as competitors of cytokinins at the receptor level. Flow cytometry and microscopic analyses revealed that anticytokinins inhibit the cell cycle and cause disorganization of the microtubular cytoskeleton and apoptosis. This is consistent with the hypothesis that they inhibit regulatory cyclin-dependent kinase (CDK) enzymes. Biochemical studies demonstrated inhibition by selected anti-cytokinins of both Arabidopsis and human CDKs. X-ray determination of the crystal structure of a human CDK2-anticytokinin complex demonstrated that the antagonist occupies the ATP-binding site of CDK2. Finally, treatment of human cancer cell lines with anticytokinins demonstrated their ability to kill human cells with similar effectiveness as known CDK inhibitors. 相似文献

Interactive playback experiments were used to study the signal value to the corn bunting, Miliaria calandra, of alternating and overlapping singing. We subjected 15 males to two stimuli that differed in the temporal pattern of song
playback (alternating or overlapping). We measured eight characteristics of the males’ response in two categories—song output
and movements. Overlapping and alternating playback elicited a similar song response, characteristic of highly aroused males.
Song response correlated positively with males’ singing activity before playback, irrespective of stimulus. There were significant
differences between latency of approach to the loudspeaker and number of flights. Birds approached the loudspeaker more quickly
and spent more time close to it when playback alternated with their songs. The results suggest overlapping song could be interpreted
as a stronger threat but elicits a more cautious, rather than stronger, response than the alternating pattern. Males were
found to shorten songs during the playback compared with songs sung before and after stimulation. The only predictor of degree
of song shortening was song activity before the playback began. It should, therefore, be regarded as a signal which is related

The aim of this study was to evaluate the seroprevalence of Paracoccidioides brasiliensis infection in wild New World monkeys (Cebus sp. and Alouatta caraya). A total of 93 animals (Cebus sp., n = 68 and Alouatta caraya, n = 25) were captured in the Paraná River basin, Paraná State, Brazil and the serum samples were analyzed by ELISA and immunodiffusion
using P. brasiliensis gp43 and exoantigen as antigens, respectively. The seropositivity observed by ELISA was 44.1% and 60% for Cebus sp. and A. caraya, respectively, while by immunodiffusion test Cebus sp. showed positivity of 2.9% only. No significant difference was observed in relation to age and sex. This is the first
report of paracoccidioidomycosis in wild capuchin monkeys and in wild-black and golden-howler monkeys. The high positivity
to P. brasiliensis infection in both species evaluated in our study and the positivity by immunodiffusion test in Cebus sp. suggest that natural disease may be occurring in wild monkeys living in paracoccidioidomycosis endemic areas. 相似文献

Chicken cystatin, a homologue of human cystatin C, like other low-molecular-weight proteins is metabolized by renal proximal tubule cells. However, the precise mechanism(s) of this process has not been elucidated yet. To characterize chicken cystatin binding to renal brush-border membranes, the incubation of fluorescein labelled protein with rat cortical homogenate was performed. Saturation-dependent and reversible binding with low affinity (Kd = 3.67–4.07 μM) and high capacity (Bmax = 2.32–2.79 nmol/mg) was observed. Bovine albumin was the most potent competitor (Ki = 0.7 μM) among other megalin/cubilin ligands tested. The presence of Ca+ 2 ions was necessary to effective cystatin binding by brush-border membranes. Obtained data strongly support the hypothesis that chicken cystatin is a novel ligand for megalin/cubilin receptors tandem on proximal tubular cells. 相似文献

Recent reports have indicated that cholesterol plays a crucial role during the uptake of mycobacteria by macrophages. However, the significance of cholesterol modification enzymes encoded by Mycobacterium tuberculosis for bacterial pathogenicity remains unknown. Here, the authors explored whether the well-known cholesterol modification enzyme, cholesterol oxidase (ChoD), is important for virulence of the tubercle bacillus. Homologous recombination was used to replace the choD gene from the M. tuberculosis genome with a nonfunctional copy. The resultant mutant (delta choD) was attenuated in peritoneal macrophages. No attenuation in macrophages was observed when the same strain was complemented with an intact choD gene controlled by a heat shock promoter (delta choDP(hsp)choD).
