Few cases of pathological alterations of the continuously growing, rootless permanent canines (tusks) of male wild boars have been described in the scientific literature. In this paper we present a case of loss of the left mandibular permanent canine in a male wild boar from the Slovak Republic. The opening of the canines alveolus was misplaced posteriorly, which was evidence of a malposition of the tooth. The boars left maxillary tusk showed overgrowth and lacked a distinct wear surface, indicating that it had not been in contact with the left mandibular tusk due to the latters malposition. Our findings suggest that the left mandibular tusk had also shown overgrowth. It is supposed that malposition and overgrowth increased the tusks risk of being damaged, and that a strong mechanical impact caused a complete or incomplete fracture of the tooth. It is further supposed that infection and inflammation of the tusks pulp occurred as sequelae of the fracture. The spread of the infection and inflammation through the large opening at the tusks growing end then led to chronic osteomyelitis of the surrounding mandibular bone. In the course of the disease process, the tusk or its remnant was shed from the mandible.  相似文献

Synchronously germinating aerial spores of Streptomyces granaticolor were used to study protein activation and expression during the transition from dormant to metabolically active vegetative forms. The first phase of protein activation is associated with the solubility of proteins. Three major chaperones, DnaK, Trigger factor, and GroEL, were identified in spores. Enhancement in rate of protein synthesis during germination was accompanied by the association of TF and DnaK with ribosomes. During germination, the chaperones TF, GroEL, and DnaK undergo reversible phosphorylation. GroEL was phosphorylated on both Ser and Thr, whereas phosphorylation of DnaK and TF was detected on Thr only. A proteomic approach was used to gain more information on protein expression during germination on two types of media differing in the ability of cells to produce antibiotic granaticin. To obtain an overview of the metabolic activity of germinating spores, glycolytic enzymes, enzymes of citric acid cycle, metabolism of amino acids and nucleic acids, and components of the protein synthesis system were identified and analyzed using the proteomic database. Background

At the turn of the 19th century the first observations of a female-biased sex ratio in broods and populations of the head louse, Pediculus humanus capitis, had been reported. A study by Buxton in 1940 on the sex ratio of lice on prisoners in Ceylon is still today the subject of reanalyses. This sex ratio distortion had been detected in ten different countries. In the last sixty years no new data have been collected, especially on scalp infestations under economically and socially more developed conditions.

Results

Here we report a female bias of head lice in a survey of 480 school children in Argentina. This bias is independent of the intensity of the pediculosis, which makes local mate competition highly unlikely as the source of the aberrant sex ratio; however, other possible adaptive mechanisms cannot be discounted. These lice as well as lice from pupils in Britain were carrying several strains of the endosymbiotic bacterium Wolbachia pipientis, one of the most wide spread intracellular sex ratio distorters. Similar Wolbachia strains are also present in the pig louse, Haematopinus suis, suggesting that this endosymbiont might have a marked influence on the biology of the whole order. The presence of a related obligate nutritional bacterium in lice prevents the investigation of a causal link between sex ratio and endosymbionts.

Conclusions

Regardless of its origin, this sex ratio distortion in head lice that has been reported world wide, is stable over time and is a remarkable deviation from the stability of frequency-dependent selection of Fisher's sex ratio. A female bias first reported in 1898 is still present over a hundred years and a thousand generations later.

Here we describe an experimental design aimed to investigate changes in total cellular levels of Na+ and K+ ions in cultures of freshwater filamentous cyanobacteria. Ion concentrations were measured in whole cells by flame photometry. Cellular Na+ levels increased exponentially with rising alkalinity, with K+ levels being maximal for optimal growth pH (∼8). At standardized pH conditions, the increase in cellular Na+, as induced by NaCl at 10 mM, was coupled by the two sodium channel-modulating agents lidocaine hydrochloride at 1 μM and veratridine at 100 μM. Both the channel-blockers amiloride (1 mM) and saxitoxin (1 μM), decreased cell-bound Na+ and K+ levels. Results presented demonstrate the robustness of well-defined channel blockers and channel-activators in the study of cyanobacterial Na+- K+ fluxes. Published: June 29, 2004.  相似文献

Populations of cave-dwelling bat species were investigated in the transitory region between the Eastern Thrace and the Western Pontus. Data were collected during 30 surveys in 13 underground sites, 10 of which had not been surveyed previously by bat researchers, between March 1999 and March 2000. Approximately 20 000 bats representing eight species were recorded. Grouping the sites according to their ecological resemblance, by means of cluster and correspondence analyses, yielded different results for the summer and winter data. In summer, there was a partial separation of the sites by their location in biogeographic regions. In winter, no regional grouping was observed. It was concluded that in the transitory region, species distribution does not differ considerably between the Eastern Thracian and Western Pontic ecosystems. In addition, a conservation scoring system is proposed for those sites investigated, their status is evaluated, and the most important local roosts are identified.  相似文献

The Bet protein of foamy viruses (FVs) is an auxiliary protein encoded by the 3' end of the viral genome. Although its function during the viral replication cycle is still unknown, Bet seems to play a key role in the establishment and/or maintenance of viral persistence, representing the predominant viral protein detected during chronic infection. To clarify the function of this viral protein, the subcellular distribution of Bet from the prototypic human foamy virus (HFV) was examined. We report here that this protein is distributed in both the cytoplasm and the nucleus of HFV-infected or Bet-transfected cells. The nuclear targeting results from the presence of a bipartite nuclear localization signal at the C-terminal region, sufficient to direct heterologous reporter proteins to the nucleus. Since HFV Bet spreads between cells, we show here that the secreted protein targets the nuclei of recipient cells. HFV Bet follows an unconventional route to exit the cell since its secretion is not affected by brefeldin A, a drug which disrupts the trafficking between the endoplasmic reticulum and the Golgi complex. Finally, these inter- and intracellular movements were also observed for the equine foamy virus Bet protein, strongly suggesting that these remarkable features are conserved among FVs.  相似文献

Acute cocaine can inhibit catecholamine biosynthesis by regulating the enzymatic activity of tyrosine hydroxylase via alterations in the phosphorylation state of the enzyme. The mechanisms underlying acute cocaine-dependent regulation of tyrosine hydroxylase phosphorylation have not been determined. In this study, 0, 15 or 30 mg/kg cocaine was administered intraperitoneally to rats and the phosphorylation state of tyrosine hydroxylase in the brain was examined using antibodies specific for the phosphorylated forms of serine-19, -31 and -40 in tyrosine hydroxylase. In the caudate and nucleus accumbens, cocaine dose-dependently decreased the levels of phosphorylated serine-19, -31 and -40. In the ventral tegmental area, the levels of phosphorylated serine-19, but not serine-31 and -40, were decreased by 15 and 30 mg/kg cocaine. In the amygdala, the levels of phosphorylated serine-19, but not serine-31 or -40, were decreased. The functional effects of these alterations in phosphorylation state were assessed by measuring tyrosine hydroxylase activity in vivo (accumulation of DOPA after administration of the decarboxylase inhibitor NSD-1015). Acute administration of 30 mg/kg cocaine significantly decreased l-DOPA production in caudate and accumbens but not in amygdala. These data suggest that the phosphorylation of serine-31 or -40, but not serine-19, is involved in the regulation of tyrosine hydroxylase activity by acute cocaine.  相似文献

PC2 prohormone convertases are enzymes involved in the proteolytic maturation of neuropeptide precursors. In the present work, a cDNA encoding a PC2-like enzyme (OrlPC2) was cloned from crayfish eyestalk ganglia (medulla terminalis) containing the X-organ, a major neuroendocrine center. The predicted 634 amino acid preproprotein exhibits highest sequence identity, especially in the catalytic domain, with PC2s from arthropods and nematodes, and less with mollusc and vertebrate enzymes. It was demonstrated by in situ hybridization on crayfish medulla terminalis sections that OrlPC2 is expressed in a large number of neuron perikarya, including those producing the well known crustacean hyperglycemic hormone.  相似文献
