A costs-benefits approach has frequently been used to understand the evolutionary origin and maintenance of promiscuity in animal populations. Recent meta-analyses suggest that direct costs to unfaithful females outweigh indirect benefits from infidelity in socially monogamous songbirds, suggesting that in this taxa, extrapair fertilization (EPF) evolved primarily as a self-interest male tactic. Here we present results of comparative analysis to show that standardized selection gradients acting against female infidelity (direct costs of promiscuity) explain variation in EPF rates at an interspecific level in passerines. This result confirms that costs to females resulting from reduced parental care from cheated males constrain promiscuity in this group. Our data indicate that females exert resistance over EPFs when the costs of infidelity are high and, conversely, that the rate of EPFs increases when selection on females to defend themselves against EPF attempts by males is weak and costs of infidelity are low. 相似文献

Hundred micrometers-sized porous hydroxyapatite globules have proved as a successful tissue engineering strategy for bone defects in vivo, as was shown in studies on human mandibles. These granules need to provide enough porous space for bone ingrowth, while maintaining sufficient mechanical competence (stiffness and strength) in this highly load-bearing organ. This double challenge motivates us to scrutinize more deeply the micro- and nanomechanical characteristics of such globules, as to identify possible optimization routes. Therefore, we imaged such a (pre-cracked) granule in a microCT scanner, transformed the attenuation coefficients into voxel-specific nanoporosities, from which we determined, via polycrystal micromechanics, voxel-specific (heterogeneous) elastic properties. The importance of the latter and of the presence of one to several hundred micrometers-sized cracks for realistically estimating the load-carrying behavior of the globule under a typical two-point compressive loading (as in a "splitting" test) is shown through results of large-scale Finite Element analyses, in comparison to analytical results for a sphere loaded at its poles: Use of homogeneous instead of heterogeneous elastic properties would overestimate the structure's stiffness by 5% (when employing a micromechanics-based process as to attain homogeneous properties)-the cracks, in comparison, weaken the structure by one to two orders of magnitudes. 相似文献

Metastasis-associated protein 3 (MTA3) is a constituent of the Mi-2/nucleosome remodeling and deacetylase (NuRD) protein complex that regulates gene expression by altering chromatin structure and can facilitate cohesin loading onto DNA. The biological function of MTA3 within the NuRD complex is unknown. Herein, we show that MTA3 was expressed highly in granulosa cell nuclei of all ovarian follicle stages and at lower levels in corpora lutea. We tested the hypothesis that MTA3-NuRD complex function is required for granulosa cell proliferation. In the ovary, MTA3 interacted with NuRD proteins CHD4 and HDAC1 and the core cohesin complex protein RAD21. In cultured mouse primary granulosa cells, depletion of endogenous MTA3 using RNA interference slowed cell proliferation; this effect was rescued by coexpression of exogenous MTA3. Slowing of cell proliferation correlated with a significant decrease in cyclin B1 and cyclin B2 expression. Granulosa cell populations lacking MTA3 contained a significantly higher percentage of cells in G2/M phase and a lower percentage in S phase compared with control cells. Furthermore, MTA3 depletion slowed entry into M phase as indicated by reduced phosphorylation of histone H3 at serine 10. These findings provide the first evidence to date that MTA3 interacts with NuRD and cohesin complex proteins in the ovary in vivo and regulates G2/M progression in proliferating granulosa cells. 相似文献

The aim of this study was to assess the influence of cisplatin and an extremely low frequency electromagnetic field (ELF‐EMF) on antioxidant enzyme activity and the lipid peroxidation ratio, as well as the level of DNA damage and reactive oxygen species (ROS) production in AT478 carcinoma cells. Cells were cultured for 24 and 72 h in culture medium with cisplatin. Additionally, the cells were irradiated with 50 Hz/1 mT ELF‐EMF for 16 min using a solenoid as a source of the ELF‐EMF. The amount of ROS, superoxide dismutase (SOD) isoenzyme activity, glutathione peroxidase (GSH‐Px) activity, DNA damage, and malondialdehyde (MDA) levels were assessed. Cells that were exposed to cisplatin exhibited a significant increase in ROS and antioxidant enzyme activity. The addition of ELF‐EMF exposure to cisplatin treatment resulted in decreased ROS levels and antioxidant enzyme activity. A significant reduction in MDA concentrations was observed in all of the study groups, with the greatest decrease associated with treatment by both cisplatin and ELF‐EMF. Cisplatin induced the most severe DNA damage; however, when cells were also irradiated with ELF‐EMF, less DNA damage occurred. Exposure to ELF‐EMF alone resulted in an increase in DNA damage compared to control cells. ELF‐EMF lessened the effects of oxidative stress and DNA damage that were induced by cisplatin; however, ELF‐EMF alone was a mild oxidative stressor and DNA damage inducer. We speculate that ELF‐EMF exerts differential effects depending on the exogenous conditions. This information may be of value for appraising the pathophysiologic consequences of exposure to ELF‐EMF. The Ortolan bunting Emberiza hortulana was censused in Poland during the Common Breeding Birds Monitoring Project in 2003–2009. Data from 683 monitoring polygons,
covering in total more than 0.23% of the country, were used in the analysis. Based on the data and environmental information
gathered in GIS databases (Corine land cover “CLC2000 and 2006” database, digital elevation model “GTOPO30” dataset, “Wordclim”
dataset, and NDVI dataset), we modeled a habitat- and spatial-related variation of the Ortolan bunting’s presence. Birds were
recorded in 13.2% grid cells. The mean density was 0.5 individual/km2. We modeled the spatial presence of birds using multivariate adaptive regression splines (MARS). Then models were cross-validated
to check their consistency. The environment-use model shows that the Ortolan bunting prefers extensively cultivated farmland
dominated by non-irrigated arable fields, small coniferous and mixed forests, complex cultivation patterns, and meadows. The
preferred areas are located on lowlands in western and central parts of the country where the climate is the driest and warmest.
Such a repeatable spatial pattern model of the population helped to create a predictive map of the Ortolan bunting’s presence
in Poland. The general rule is that the probability gradient of its presence increases from the northeastern part of the country
to the central and southwestern parts of Poland. Additionally, the Ortolan bunting avoids severe continental climate and regions

Six feeding groups of 60 early juveniles (0.6?g) of a rheophilic cyprinid barbel Barbus barbus were reared in triplicate in 18?glass aquaria. Fish fed a commercial formulated dry diet Aller Futura were compared with those on natural food??commercially available frozen Chironomidae larvae at 17, 21 and 25°C. Daily food rations were adjusted according to fish biomass, differences in hydration between the two diets, and rearing temperature. No mortality occurred during experiment. Temperature, and especially diet, both affected whole body proximate and mineral composition of B. barbus juveniles. Under conditions of this experiment the formulated diet Aller Futura seems to satisfy the demands for calcium and magnesium, while an elevated lipid content in this diet was found and marginally deficient phosphorus content can be concluded. These resulted in a depressed content of phosphorus and total minerals in the body, and in elevated lipid content and condition coefficient in the Futura-fed fish, but no visible body deformities occurred. Advantages and limitations of the condition coefficient K were discussed. This is a non-destructive, express indicator that can be used as a supplementary tool for estimation of changes in body proximate composition in fish juveniles of similar size within a population. 相似文献

Escape enables prey to avoid an approaching predator. The escape decision-making process has traditionally been interpreted using theoretical models that consider ultimate explanations based on the cost/benefit paradigm. Ultimate approaches, however, suffer from inseparable extra-assumptions due to an inability to accurately parameterize the model's variables and their interactive relationships. In this study, we propose a mathematical model that uses intensity of predator-mediated visual stimuli as a basic cue for the escape response. We consider looming stimuli (i.e. expanding retinal image of the moving predator) as a cue to flight initiation distance (FID; distance at which escape begins) of incubating Mallards (Anas platyrhynchos). We then examine the relationship between FID, vegetation cover and directness of predator trajectory, and fit the resultant model to experimental data. As predicted by the model, vegetation concealment and directness of predator trajectory interact, with FID decreasing with increased concealment during a direct approach toward prey, but not during a tangential approach. Thus, we show that a simple proximate expectation, which involves only visual processing of a moving predator, may explain interactive effects of environmental and predator-induced variables on an escape response. We assume that our proximate approach, which offers a plausible and parsimonious explanation for variation in FID, may serve as an evolutionary background for traditional, ultimate explanations and should be incorporated into interpretation of escape behavior. 相似文献
