Assessing population density is crucial for studying the ecology and evolutionary biology of species as well as for conservation purposes. Here we used point count methods to infer population density in a single-island endemic passerine bird, the Réunion Grey White-eye Zosterops borbonicus, that displays striking evidence of differentiation at a small spatial scale. Population density was estimated at 5.17 birds ha?1 (CL 4.85–5.50), a value somewhat higher than previously believed. This estimation provides the first detailed estimation of bird population density in the vulnerable summit ecosystems of Réunion and will possibly allow a better understanding of the evolutionary causes of this plumage colour variation. 相似文献

The electrical behavior of small single frog atrial trabeculae in the double sucrose gap has been investigated. The currents injected during voltage clamp experiments did not behave as predicted from the assumption of spatial uniformity of the voltage across a Hodgkin-Huxley membrane. Much of the difference is due to the geometrical complexities of this tissue. Nonetheless, two transient inward currents have been identified, the faster of which is blocked by tetrodotoxin (TTX). The magnitude of the slower transient varies markedly between preparations but always increases in a given preparation with increase of external calcium. The fast transient current traces, at small to intermediate depolarizations, are often marred by the presence of notches and secondary peaks due most probably to the loss of space clamp conditions. In many preparations these could be removed by reducing the current magnitude through application of a partially-blocking dose of TTX. Conversely, in the preparations whose fast transient was fully blocked by TTX, notches and secondary peaks in the slow transient could by induced through increasing calcium concentration and thereby the slow current magnitude. Previously used techniques for the measurement of the reversal potential of the fast inward transient have been shown to be invalid. In so far as they can be measured, the reversal potentials of the fast and slow inward transient are in the same neighborhood, i.e. around 120 mV from rest. The true values may be quite a bit apart. The total charge flow in the capacitive transient was measured for different sized nodes and preparations. From these data and estimates of plasma membrane area per unit trabecular volume, specific membrane capacitances of around 3 muF/cm2 were calculated for small bundles. The apparent ion current densities on this basis are approximately 1/10 of those measured in axons. The capacitive current occurring in small bundles decayed as the sum of at least three exponential functions of time. On the basis of these data and the anomalously large stable node widths, we suggest a coaxial core model of the preparation with the inner elements in series with an additional large extracellular resistance. 相似文献

Seventy-three patients were studied after ingesting a liquid glucose meal, tagged with 113Indium. Nineteen of these patients were awaiting surgery for their duodenal ulcer, while 54 were studied postoperatively, 25 of whom experienced troublesome postprandial (dumping) symptoms in their daily lives. The radioactive marker emptied significantly faster in the symptomatic patients than in the symptomfree, pre and post-operative groups (initial emptying rate 3.45 ± 0.23, compared with 1.16 ± 0.19 and 1.27 ± 0.15% fall in counts/min respectively; p < 0.01). Initial (20 min) rises in the plasma concentrations of neurotensin-like immunoreactivity measured during the test correlated significantly with the rate of gastric emptying in all patients, being greatest in patients with dumping symptoms. Physiological concentrations of neurotensin have been shown to delay gastric emptying. The excessive rise in plasma neurotensin-like immunoreactivity in patients with dumping symptoms, presumably occuring as a result of the rapid passage of nutrients to the neurotensin-rich ileum, may possibly have a compensatory role in slowing further emptying from the stomach. 相似文献

An interaction viewpoint is defined for looking at natural systems. This viewpoint is seen to be connected with quantum mechanical uncertainty and measurement theory. A connection is then shown between quantum mechanical uncertainty and the workability of Grunbaüm's “infinity machines”. Finally the workability of infinity machines is related to Elsasser's “generalized complementarity”. The net result is to show that generalized complementarity is not distinct from complementarity in atomic physics but has its roots in the same place, i.e. quantum mechanical measurement theory. Mouse t haplotypes are variant forms of chromosome 17 that exist at high
frequencies in worldwide populations of two species of commensal mice. To
determine both the relationship of t haplotypes to each other and the
species within which they exist, 35 representative t haplotypes were
analyzed by means of 10 independent molecular probes, including five DNA
clones and five polypeptide spots identified by means of two- dimensional
gel electrophoresis. All of the tested haplotypes were found to share
restriction fragments and polypeptide spots that are absent in mice
carrying wild-type forms of chromosome 17. This observation provides the
first direct evidence that all of the known t haplotypes are descendents of
a single ancestral chromosome. The absence of variation among t haplotypes
could mean that this ancestral chromosome existed relatively recently, in
which case it would be necessary to postulate introgressions of t
haplotypes across species lines to explain their presence in both Mus
domesticus and M. musculus. Alternatively, it is possible that the
ancestral chromosome existed prior to the split between M. domesticus and
M. musculus and that, by chance, our probes fail to detect polymorphisms
that exist among the t haplotypes. A further result of our analysis is the
characterization of a partial t haplotype in a wild population of Israeli
mice.

The electrodiffusion equations were solved for the one-ion channel both by the analytical method due to Levitt and also by Brownian dynamic simulations. For both types of calculations equilibration of ion distribution between the bath and the ends of the channel was assumed. Potential profiles were found that give good fits to published data on Na+ permeation of gramicidin channels. The data were best fit by profiles that have no relative energy maximum at the mouth of the channel. This finding suggests that alignment of waters or channel charged groups inside the channel in response to an ion's approach may provide an energetically favorable situation for entry sufficient to overcome the energy required for removing bulk waters of hydration. An alternative possibility is that the barrier to ion entry is situated outside the region restricted to single-ion occupancy. Replacement of valine with more polar amino acids at the No. 1 location was found to correspond to a deepening of the potential minima near the channel mouths, an increase in height of the central barrier to ion translocation across the channel, and possibly a reduction in the mobility of the ion-water complex in the channel. The Levitt theory was extended to calculate passage times for ions to cross the channel and the blocking effects of ions that entered the channel but didn't cross. 1. The aphid Aphis fabae (Scopoli) is facultatively tended by Lasius niger (Linnaeus) ants. Previously, we found that A. fabae colonies can be made up of several clones, and that clones display significant differences in the composition of their honeydew sugars, especially in the amount of the ant attractant sugar melezitose that they produce. 2. These clonal differences could greatly impact the strength of the mutualistic interaction with ants as well as the aphids' fitness. 3. Hence, the aim of this study was to compare the fitness of different A. fabae clones that differed in their melezitose secretion, and whether or not they were tended by ants. 4. Individual fitness indices, colony growth, and alate production of single‐clone aphid colonies were analysed. 5. The results demonstrate that the fitness consequences of ant attendance critically depend on an interaction between levels of melezitose production. In particular, we show that high‐melezitose secreting clones produce fewer alates and hence might have a lower dispersal ability in the presence of ants. 6. Furthermore, these data confirm previous evidence that ant attendance is costly and results in the production of fewer apterae. 相似文献
