The development of nanotechnology has generated new means of disease diagnosis and treatment. Infectious diseases, including leishmaniasis, malaria, etc., have benefited from the advent of new nanomaterials and/or nanodevices capable of detecting specific antigens and antibodies with high specificity and low cost. In this paper, we present an investigation on a single-celled protozoan Leishmaniasis parasite, a disease considered of standard infectivity, given the high degree of immunological specificity. Natural rubber (NR) membranes incorporating gold nanoparticles (GNPs) were placed in the culture medium and the physiological behavior of Leishmania brasiliensis promastigotes was evaluated. The natural rubber membranes containing GNPs decreased the population growth rate, showing a lower index of living promastigotes (attached to the membrane surface) depending on the amount of nanoparticles deposited in the membrane surface. Such membranes may be used to develop a flexible band-aid for skin lesions from degenerative infection state, inhibiting the population growth of parasites in the lesions. In addition, natural rubber membranes would also stimulate angiogenesis in damaged tissues.  相似文献

Baccharis dracunculifolia D.C. (Asteraceae) is the most important plant source of the Brazilian green propolis. Since propolis is known for its antimicrobial activity, the aim of this work was to evaluate the antimicrobial activities of B. dracunculifolia and some of its isolated compounds. The results showed that the leaves extract of B. dracunculifolia (BdE) presents antifungal and antibacterial activities, especially against Candida krusei and Cryptococcus neoformans, for which the BdE showed IC50 values of 65 microg mL(-1) and 40 microg mL(-1), respectively. In comparison to the BdE, it was observed that the green propolis extract (GPE) showed better antimicrobial activity, displaying an IC50 value of 9 microg mL(-1) against C. krusei. Also, a phytochemical study of the BdE was carried out, affording the isolation of ursolic acid (1), 2a-hydroxy-ursolic acid (2), isosakuranetin (3), aromadendrin-4'-methylether (4), baccharin (5), viscidone (6), hautriwaic acid lactone (7), and the clerodane diterpene 8. This is the first time that the presence of compounds 1, 2, and 8 in B. dracunculifolia has been reported. Among the isolated compounds, 1 and 2 showed antibacterial activity against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, displaying IC50 values of 5 microg mL(-1) and 3 microg mL(-1), respectively. 3 was active against C. neoformans, showing an IC50 value of 15 microg mL(-1) and a MIC value of 40 microg mL(-1), while compounds 4-8 were inactive against all tested microorganisms. The results showed that the BdE, similar to the GPE, displays antimicrobial activity, which may be related to the effect of several compounds present in the crude extract.  相似文献

This paper proposes some guidelines to compute complexity index in those mangroves where either seasonal or strong disturbances have occurred. We surveyed 31 mangrove localities in Buenaventura Bay, Central Pacific Coast of Colombia, where structural parameters were measured within a 0.1 ha plot. Also, most likely disturbances were noted for each plot. Complexity index was calculated in its classical form using the arithmetic mean of the three tallest trees(maximal mean) and alternatively using: a) the total mean: the height average of all trees recorded in each plot; and b) the mode: the most frequent tree height class (10 cm intervals) within each plot. Afterwards, we compared the three computations and discussed there liability of each one according to the current state by plot. In addition, all structural parameters were sorted in two diameter at breast height (dbh) cohorts (2.5–10 cm and ≥ 10 cm) to figure out which contributes more to the forest structure. We conclude the following: (a) The mean of the three tallest trees is not a good estimator of forest development when seasonal or strong disturbances occur since complexity index based in it always overestimates forest structure. (b) Seasonal disturbances and recruitment produce mosaic forests. The best estimator of this condition is the mean height which encompasses both central tendency and variability. (c) The modal height is also helpful to establish the dominant cohort when forests show two or more storied-canopies, or intermediate cohorts are missing. It also applies when a new stock of recruits is entering in a mature forest (the modal or maximal heights can be used interchangeably in this case). (d) Maximal height is the best estimator for uniformly developed forests with closed canopies and/or a single dominant tall-cohort. (e) If one is not confident about which height type to include to compute the complexity index, we recommend to sort out structure data by dbh-cohorts and calculate indices for both of them. This will show which cohort is contributing most to forest complexity. Finally, we suggest to exclude non-mangrove species from the complexity index computation since they mostly do not contribute significantly to forest basal area. 1. Carp hepatocytes were isolated by dissociating the liver tissue with collagenase. The procedure yields viable cells with highly preserved ultrastructural and metabolic features. The isolated cells were able to self-aggregated and form tissue. 2. RNA and protein synthesis activity was significantly higher in the carp hepatocytes from summer acclimatized fish compared to the activity present in the cold adapted animals. 3. RNA synthesis assayed in carp hepatocytes suspensions obtained from summer and winter acclimatized fish exhibited a behaviour consistent with an inverse compensation to the cold acclimatization state, being apparently repressed, whereas protein synthesis did not show a compensatory activity.  相似文献

The Steven–Johnson syndrome (SJS) is characterized by a sudden onset of mucous membrane erosion (predominantly oral mucosa, lips, and conjunctivae) with widespread blistering of the skin involving up to 10% of the body surface area. It is almost always a drug-related reaction, although it can be caused by infections and immunizations. A 33-year-old man with recent diagnosis of HIV infection developed antiretroviral treatment (ART)-associated SJS. Physical activity and sleep parameters were recorded by wrist actigraphy in four different consecutive scenarios: baseline assessment, first ART regimen, hospitalization, and second ART regimen. Significant differences were observed in physical activity patterns between the four phases. No differences in sleep parameters were found. To our knowledge, this is the first study recording physical activity changes and sleep during a SJS reaction.  相似文献

Most of the hematophagous insects act as disease vectors, including Aedes aegypti, responsible for transmitting some of the most critical arboviruses globally, such as Dengue. The use of repellents based on natural products is a promising alternative for personal protection compared to industrial chemical repellents. In this study, the repellent effect of essential oils extracted from Lippia thymoides, Lippia alba, Cymbopogon winterianus, and Eucalyptus globulus leaves was evaluated. Essential oils used showed repellent activity against Ae. aegypti in laboratory bioassays, obtaining protection rates above 70 % from 3.75 mg/mL and higher concentration for all analyzed oils. GC/MS identified 57 constituents, which were used in the ligand-based pharmacophore model to expose compounds with requirements for repellents that modulate mosquitoes behavior through odorant-binding protein 1 Ae. aegypti. Ligand-based pharmacophore model approach results suggested that repellent activity from C. winterianus, L. alba, and L. thymoides essential oils’ metabolites is related to Citronelal (QFIT=26.77), Citronelol (QFIT=11.29), Citronelol acetate (QFIT=52.22) and Geranil acetate (QFIT=10.28) with synergistic or individual activity. E. globulus essential oil's repellent activity is associated with Ledol (0.94 %; QFIT=41.95). Molecular docking was applied to understand the binding mode and affinity of the essential oils’ data set at the protein binding site. According to molecular docking, Citronelol (ChemPLP=60.98) and geranyl acetate (ChemPLP=60.55) were the best-classified compounds compared to the others and they can be explored to develop new repellents.  相似文献
