In order to relate phenological responses of trees to environmental variables we recorded the phenological patterns and select morphological and physiological traits (wood density and water potentials) of five tree species (Acacia gaumeri, Apoplanesia paniculata, Bursera simaruba, Gymnopodium floribundum, and Diospyros cuneata) in the tropical dry deciduous forest of the National Park of Dzibilchaltún, Yucatan, Mexico, over a period of 2 years (2004 and 2005). We chose two sites: one close to a permanent water source, locally known as ‘cenote’ (the CC site, ground water table was found at 2 m) and the other far from the cenote (FC site ground water table was at a depth of 10 m). Sites mainly differed in soil depth (FC site having greater soil depth) and soil nutrient characteristics (FC site more potassium, CC site more phosphorous). Our results indicated significant differences in phenology within species between sites and years, with leaf, flower and fruit production tending to be higher at the CC site and in the year 2004. Wood density and xylem water potentials were negatively related to each other, and midday water potentials were higher at the CC site. Differences in phenology found among years suggest that the timing of rainfall as well as the duration of periods without rain may play a more important role in phenology than total annual precipitation. Also differences inter-sites suggest a strong effect of site on tree phenology. Proximity to superficial bodies of water, such as cenotes, coupled with a greater concentration of available phosphorus in the soil may modify the effect of drought in this tropical dry deciduous forest.  相似文献

Phospholipase B (PLB) has been reported to be one of the virulence factors for human pathogenic fungi and has also been described as necessary for the early events in infection. Eriocnema fulva Naudin is a perennial herb, endemic to Minas Gerais state, SE Brazil, found on humid, shaded rocky riverbanks in montane semideciduous seasonal forests. The species is threatened, but information regarding its biology is still lacking, although such information is fundamental to any management plan. We aimed to evaluate the reproductive system of Eriocnema fulva in the Jambreiro Forest (19 degrees 58'-59' S and 43 degrees 55'-52' W, 800-1100 m altitude), municipality of Nova Lima, by experiments carried out in 1997 and 1998. The flowers are white, and flowering is of the steady state type, occurring once a year from November to December. Anthers are poricidal, and pollen is the only resource for visitors. The chromosome number is n = 17 during meiosis. The species is self-compatible, but does not produce fruits by spontaneous self-pollination or agamospermy; it requires pollen vectors and buzz pollination in order to produce fruits. Cross-pollination is the main reproductive strategy of E. fulva, and is accentuated by the small number of flowers (one or two in each plant) opened per day. Although the population studied was shaded by forest canopy, the seeds needed light to germinate. Germination ratio was lower in germination cabinet on filter paper (14% after 30 days) than in greenhouse on soil brought from the forest (47% after 25 days). Although the fruit is a capsule and the seeds are small, dispersion (anemochory or hydrochory) does not seem to occur at long distance, as it is the case for other Melastomataceae species with similar syndrome.  相似文献

Because of the lack of readily available information about the influence of temperature on microorganism reactivation processes subsequent to inactivation with UV radiation, a series of batch reactivation studies were performed at 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, and 30 degrees C. A special effort was made to model the reactivation process to enable the effect of the temperature variable to be quantified. Because an earlier-proposed kinetic model (K. Kashimada, N. Kamiko, K. Yamamoto, and S. Ohgaki, Water Sci. Technol. 33:261-269, 1996), a first-order saturation type, does not adequately fit the data obtained in experiments of reactivation in conditions of light and darkness, a modification of that model is proposed. The new model, which actually coincides with the classical logistic equation, incorporates two kinetic parameters: the maximum survival ratio (Sm) and the second-order reactivation rate constant (k2). In order to interpret correctly the reactivation occurring in conditions of darkness, a new term for the decay is added to the logistic equation. The new model accurately fits the data obtained in reactivation experiments, permitting the interpretation of the kinetic parameters Sm, k2, and M (for only repair in darkness), where M is mortality, a zero-order decay rate constant, and their relationship with various environmental conditions, such as microbial type, light, and temperature. The parameters Sm and k2 (and M for reactivation in conditions of darkness) show exponential dependence on the reactivating temperature, and it is possible to predict their values and hence the reactivation curve from the equations proposed in this work.  相似文献

Campylobacteriosis is an extremely important zoonosis, circulating freely in the environment. In nonhuman primates kept in open facilities and bred for experimental purposes, the presence of Campylobacter spp. could cause severe damage to the production and interfere with the results of scientific research. In this paper, we assessed the circulation of Campylobacter spp. in a colony of clinically healthy rhesus monkeys (Macaca mulatta) destined to research. The analysis was carried out during seven non-consecutive years. Data showed that despite several changes made in animal management along the studied years in order to control this zoonosis, reduction of bacterial charge did not occur. Significant differences among the age groups and sex were observed. Infants showed higher susceptibility than adult animals. In general males were more infected than females. Modifications adopted in the handling techniques need to be reviewed with the intent of improving the production, reducing bacterial infection of the stock and avoiding undesirable cross reactions in the research carried out with these animals. Therefore, this paper alerts professionals that work directly with captive rhesus monkeys about the risks of Campylobacter spp. infection and possible interference on the experimental procedures.  相似文献

Primordial germ cells (PGCs) are the stem cell precursors of the germ line. Several growth factors contribute to enlarging the PGC population by acting as mitogens, survival factors or both. Interleukin-2 (IL-2) has a growth-promoting activity for T and B-lymphocytes, but its role in PGCs had not yet been studied. Here, we show that PGCs isolated from 10.5, 11.5 and 12.5 day postcoitum (dpc) mouse embryos constitutively express the three subunits (alpha, beta and gamma) of the IL-2 receptor (IL-2R). In contrast, IL-2 mRNA was not detected in these cells. However, the addition of recombinant IL-2 to the culture medium increased the number of PGCs in vitro via a mitogenic effect, as indicated by bromodeoxyuridine incorporation assays. Neutralization of the IL-2 receptor using anti-IL-2R subunit antibodies inhibited this IL-2-mediated proliferative effect on PGCs from 11.5 dpc embryos. Together, these data are indicative of a paracrine effect of IL-2 on PGC proliferation. In this regard, we also compared the effect of IL-2 with other compounds such as basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF), steel factor, leukemia inhibitory factor and forskolin, and found that the degree of proliferation induced by IL-2 was similar to that induced by bFGF and forskolin. These observations support the notion that similar patterns of molecular signaling may underlie the developmental pathways of hematopoietic and germ stem cell precursors.  相似文献

AIM: Rapid characterization of variable region (VR)1 variants of the porA gene among invasive strains is crucial for outbreak management and epidemiology studies. Recent sequence analysis studies in Brazil showed that the VR1 P1.7 and P1.19 variants are highly prevalent, accounting for 68%, of the total number of VR1 variants characterized. The aim of this work is to develop a rapid polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-based method for genosubtyping Neisseria meningitidis by detection of porA variable regions P1.7 and P1.19. METHODS AND RESULTS: PCR primers for the detection of porA VR1 P1.7 and P1.19 were designed and tested using 198 clinical N. meningitidis isolates that had been previously evaluated by porA sequencing. All 50 strains with VR1 P1.7 and all 65 strains with VR1 P1.19 were positively identified by the respective VR-specific PCR and no false-positive reactions occurred. CONCLUSIONS: VR-specific PCR amplification accurately identified VR P1.7 and P1.19 strains. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY: To overcome the disadvantages of serosubtyping and sequencing for typing the porA VR1 segment of N. meningitidis, we developed a PCR-based method to rapidly and accurately detect VR1 P1.7 and P1.19 variants. This approach is highly specific and sensitive; moreover it may allow for genotype determination of culture-negative samples.  相似文献

In the present paper 12 N-quinolin-8-yl-arylsulfonamides synthesized by coupling 8-aminoquinolines with various arylsulfonylchlorides were assayed in vitro against Leishmania amazonensis, Leishmania chagasi and Trypanosoma cruzi strains. This series of new compounds were found to be selective for Leishmania spp. promastigote and amastigote forms. The most active compound was the N-(8-quinolyl)-3,5-difluoro-benzenesulfonamide 10 with an IC50 against L. amazonensis and L. chagasi of 2.12 and 0.45 μM, respectively. The less cytotoxic biphenyl derivative 7 was very effective against intracellular L. amazonensis with a reduction of macrophage cell infection of 82.1% at 25 μM. In addition, a copper complex 17 of an inactive ligand was readily synthesized and showed high leishmanicidal and trypanocidal activity against both extra and intracellular forms.  相似文献
