We evaluated human urine and chicken feces, two naturally occurring, inexpensive, and readily available substances, as baits for the capture of Anostrepha spp. (Diptera: Tephritidae) by using glass McPhail traps. Two studies were performed simultaneously in a commercial mango orchard in Veracruz, México. In the first study, we compared a 50% water dilution of human urine against hydrolyzed protein, both compounds at the fresh and 5-d-old stages, and water alone (control treatment). In the second study, we tested fresh chicken feces mixed with water, a torula yeast/borax solution at three different ages (1-4, 5-9, and 10-15 d), and water (control treatment). Both human urine and chicken feces were attractive to Anastrepha adults compared with water alone, but attracted two and three times fewer adults than hydrolyzed protein and torula yeast/borax, respectively. However, unlike torula yeast/borax, aging of human urine did not decrease its attractiveness. Five-day old human urine attracted numerically more A. serpentina females than males, similar numbers of A. obliqua males and females, and significantly more sexually immature A. obliqua females than mature ones. Chicken feces proved to be as attractive as the aged torula yeast/borax treatments for A. obliqua and A. serpentina. We argue that because both human urine and chicken feces are cost-free and can be easily obtained, they are viable, low-technology alternatives to costly commercial attractants, particularly for low-income growers or backyard farmers in Mexico and other Latin American countries.  相似文献

The guanacoLama guanicoe Muller, 1776 has a wide distribution along the Andes and Patagonia. We studied the feeding behaviour of a guanaco population that lives over 4100 m altitude in the Andes of north-central Chile. By contrasting the diet of guanacos during a dry year with that of a wet year and comparing it with the plant availabilities in the field, we tested the hypothesis that the guanaco is a generalist herbivore. We predicted that under such extreme habitat conditions guanacos should consume whatever plant species are available in the environment, especially in a dry year, when vegetation is scarcer. In addition, we compared its diet at three different age classes. We estimated the diet through the microhistological analysis of plant remains found in guanaco pellets collected during January of 1997 (ie after a dry year) and 1998 (ie after a wet year; 41 vs 495 mm, respectively). Then, we computed dietary preferences, food niche-breadth, and food-niche overlap between years and among age classes. Vegetation cover and plant species richness were higher during the wet than during the dry year. The most common plants in the environment were perennial graminoids and legumes. Contrary to our prediction, the guanaco preferred a few plant species, showing a relatively narrow diet breadth that changed little between years differing in plant abundances. The diet proportions differed among the three age classes, however. Our data indicate that at least in this high-elevation population, guanacos are selective and non-opportunistic herbivores. This specialized feeding behaviour is puzzling given the energetic demands of living in a harsh environment with low availabilities of resources. The hypothesis that this is due to the lower palatability of the plants not eaten, remains to be tested.  相似文献

The impact of different microalgal semicontinuous cultures on growth and biochemical composition in the next link of the food chain was tested using the filter feeder Artemia species as a model. The marine microalga Tetraselmis suecica was cultured semicontinuously with renewal rates between 10% and 50% and used to feed Artemia. Microalgal cultures maintained with a low renewal rate that had biochemical composition similar to that of the stationary-phase cultures commonly used in aquaculture produced poor growth and survival and low food-conversion efficiency compared to cultures maintained with a high renewal rate. Changes in the renewal rate in microalgal cultures also resulted in important changes in the gross biochemical composition of the filter feeder. The gross biochemical composition of the Artemia resembled that of the microalgae used as food except for total lipid content. The percentage of protein in the organic fraction of Artemia increased from 45% to 65% of the organic weight with increasing renewal rates in the microalgal cultures, while the carbohydrate percentage decreased under the same conditions. Higher renewal rates resulted in higher lipid percentages in the microalga, but in Artemia the percentage of lipids decreased from 19% of the organic weight with a renewal rate of 10%, to 13% with a renewal rate of 50%. The percentage of all polyunsaturated fatty acids in Artemia, including 20:5n-3, increased slightly with increasing renewal rates in the microalgal cultures. Results emphasize the importance of controlling microalgal nutritional value for the success of aquaculture food chains in which filter feeders are involved. Solanum tuberosum ssp. andigena plants require a short-day (SD) photoperiod for tuber formation, a process that is also affected by gibberellins (GAs). Grafting experiments have confirmed that the photoperiod is perceived in the leaves. Tuber formation, however, usually takes place in the underground stolons. In this review, photoperiod-dependent tuberization has been divided into five chronological events: SD photoperiod perception, short-term adaptive responses to SD conditions, generation and transport of tuber-inducing signal(s), tuber formation, and long-term adaptive responses to tuber growth. Within this frame of study, the interaction of GAs and photoperiod is revised. Similar to the flowering process in Arabidopsis, we suggest the existence of two independent pathways that control tuber formation: a photoperiod-dependent pathway and a GA-dependent pathway. Nevertheless, photoperiod-dependent tuber formation requires the action of GAs at specific stages to orchestrate this complex process of development.  相似文献

p21-activated protein kinase (PAK) serine/threonine kinases are important effectors of Rho family GTPases and have been implicated in the regulation of cell morphology and motility, as well as in cell transformation. To further investigate the possible involvement of PAK kinases in tumorigenesis, we analyzed the expression of several family members in tumor cell lines. Here we demonstrate that PAK4 is frequently overexpressed in human tumor cell lines of various tissue origins. We also have identified serine (Ser-474) as the likely autophosphorylation site in the kinase domain of PAK4 in vivo. Mutation of this serine to glutamic acid (S474E) results in constitutive activation of the kinase. Phosphospecific antibodies directed against serine 474 detect activated PAK4 on the Golgi membrane when PAK4 is co-expressed with activated Cdc42. Furthermore, expression of the active PAK4 (S474E) mutant has transforming potential, leading to anchorage-independent growth of NIH3T3 cells. A kinase-inactive PAK4 (K350A,K351A), on the other hand, efficiently blocks transformation by activated Ras and inhibits anchorage-independent growth of HCT116 colon cancer cells. Taken together, our data strongly implicate PAK4 in oncogenic transformation and suggest that PAK4 activity is required for Ras-driven, anchorage-independent growth.  相似文献

The requirement for pulsatile LH and the LH surge for the acquisition of oocyte fertilizing potential and embryo developmental competency was examined in Zebu heifers. Follicular growth was superstimulated using the GnRH agonist-LH protocol in which pulsatile LH and the preovulatory LH surge are blocked. In experiment 1, heifers were assigned on Day 7 of the estrous cycle to receive: group 1A (n = 5), 1.5 mg norgestomet (NOR) implant; group 1B (n = 5), GnRH agonist implant. Follicular growth was superstimulated with 2x daily injections of FSH from Day 10 (a.m.) to Day 13 (p.m.), with PGF2alpha injection on Day 12 (a.m.). Heifers were ovariectomized on Day 15 (a.m.) and oocytes were placed immediately into fertilization, without 24 h maturation. Respective cleavage and blastocyst development rates were: group 1A, 0/64 oocytes (0%) and 0/64 (0%); group 1B, 34/70 oocytes (48.6%) and 2/70 (2.9%). In experiment 2, heifers were assigned on Day 7 of the estrous cycle to receive: group 2A (n = 10), 1.5 mg NOR implant; group 2B (n = 10), GnRH agonist implant; group 2C (n = 10), GnRH agonist implant. Follicular growth was superstimulated as in experiment 1 above. Heifers in groups 2A and 2B received an injection of 25 mg LH on Day 14 (p.m.) and all heifers were ovariectomized on Day 15 (a.m.); oocytes were placed immediately into fertilization without 24 h maturation. Cleavage rates were similar for heifers in group 2A (84/175 oocytes, 48.0%), group 2B (61/112 oocytes, 54.5%) and group 2C (69/163, 42.3%). Blastocyst development rates were similar for heifers in group 2A (22/175 oocytes, 12.6%) and group 2B (25/112 oocytes, 22.3%) and lower (P < 0.05) for heifers in group 2C (9/163 oocytes, 5.5%). Oocytes obtained from heifers treated with GnRH agonist, without injection of exogenous LH, underwent cleavage indicating that neither pulsatile LH nor the preovulatory LH surge are obligatory for nuclear maturation in cattle oocytes. Exposure to a surge-like increase in plasma LH increased embryo developmental competency indicating that the preovulatory LH surge promotes cytoplasmic maturation. The findings have important implications for controlling the in vivo maturation of oocytes before in vitro procedures including nuclear transfer.  相似文献

Blood samples were obtained at monthly intervals between April 1994 and March 1996 from captive-bred houbara (Chlamydotis undulata macqueenii), rufous-crested (Eupodotis ruficrista gindiana), and white-bellied (Eupodotis senegalensis) bustards from 4-24 wk of age. Hematology investigations were conducted to determine age-related changes and to establish reference values for growing chicks of these species. There were significant age-related changes in hematocrit, hemoglobin, and red cell count in young birds compared with those of adults. White cell counts (lymphocytes and monocytes) were higher in juvenile birds, compared with adult values.  相似文献

Human CS1, also known as novel Ly9, 19A24, or CRACC, is a member of the immunoglobulin gene superfamily (IgSF) expressed on natural killer cells and other leukocytes. Here we describe the cloning of the mouse homologue of this gene. The mouse novel Ly9 gene is shown to encode a transmembrane protein composed of two extracellular immunoglobulin-like domains, a transmembrane region and an 88-amino acid cytoplasmic domain. Mouse novel Ly9 is structurally similar to the extracellular domains of CD84 and CD229 (Ly9). Both mouse and human novel Ly9 genes mapped close to the CD229gene in a region where other members of the CD150 family have also been mapped, and analysis of their genomic sequences showed that they have an identical intron/exon organization. Northern blot analysis revealed that the expression of mouse and human novel Ly9 was predominantly restricted to hematopoietic tissues, with the exception of testis. Here we show that SAP (SH2D1A), an adapter protein responsible for the X-linked lymphoproliferative disease, binds to the phosphorylated cytoplasmic tail of human but not mouse novel Ly9. Taken together, these data indicate that mouse novel Ly9 is a new member of the expanding CD150 family of cell surface receptors.  相似文献
