Wheat is a major crop worldwide, mainly cultivated for human consumption and animal feed. Grain quality is paramount in determining its value and downstream use. While we know that climate change threatens global crop yields, a better understanding of impacts on wheat end-use quality is also critical. Combining quantitative genetics with climate model outputs, we investigated UK-wide trends in genotypic adaptation for wheat quality traits. In our approach, we augmented genomic prediction models with environmental characterisation of field trials to predict trait values and climate effects in historical field trial data between 2001 and 2020. Addition of environmental covariates, such as temperature and rainfall, successfully enabled prediction of genotype by environment interactions (G × E), and increased prediction accuracy of most traits for new genotypes in new year cross validation. We then extended predictions from these models to much larger numbers of simulated environments using climate scenarios projected under Representative Concentration Pathways 8.5 for 2050–2069. We found geographically varying climate change impacts on wheat quality due to contrasting associations between specific weather covariables and quality traits across the UK. Notably, negative impacts on quality traits were predicted in the East of the UK due to increased summer temperatures while the climate in the North and South-west may become more favourable with increased summer temperatures. Furthermore, by projecting 167,040 simulated future genotype–environment combinations, we found only limited potential for breeding to exploit predictable G × E to mitigate year-to-year environmental variability for most traits except Hagberg falling number. This suggests low adaptability of current UK wheat germplasm across future UK climates. More generally, approaches demonstrated here will be critical to enable adaptation of global crops to near-term climate change.  相似文献

Observation of the sac-spawning euphausiid Nematoscelis difficilisHansen during shipboard laboratory incubations showed that itsembryos usually hatch as pseudometanauplius (PMN) or metanauplius(MN). The eggs, which have a minute perivitelline space, arespherical at spawning and become elliptical after the nauplius1 develops. When ready to hatch, the PMN or MN embryos extendand contract their first and second antennae in a swimming movement,breaking the chorion into almost equal halves joined by onesmall section in the anterior part of the chorion. The mandiblesplay a secondary role in cutting the chorion. Then the embryopushes itself backwards with the first and second antennae toescape from the chorion. This is known as ‘push-off’hatching. The embryos always hatch progressively from the distalend towards the proximal end of the ovigerous sac. The timebetween hatching of the first and last embryo may reflect thetime the females require to lay a clutch of eggs (<2.1 h).Development time to the PMN stage at 10°C was  相似文献

The effect of the plant growth retardants ancymidol. mefluidide and uniconazole on germination of two melon accessions differing in their ability to germinate at 14°C was examined. The accessions were the cold sensitive Noy Yizre'el and the cold tolerant Persia 202. The three growth retardants were able to delay the germination of intact Noy Yizre'el seeds, but did not affect that of intact Persia 202 seeds. On the other hand germination of decoated seeds of both accessions was unaffected by these inhibitors at normal oxygen concentration, but was inhibited at 5% oxygen. When gibberellin-like activity was measured by a dwarf rice biological assay following HPLC fractionation, it was found that seeds of Persia 202 contained much more gibberellin-like activity than Noy Yizre'el seeds. Among the extracted compounds several endogenous gibberellins were identified by combined gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). They included GA4, GA20, GA1 and GA3 in Noy Yizre'el and GA34, GA20, GA1 and GA8 in Persia 202. It is suggested that the better germination of intact Persia 202 seeds, compared to Noy Yizre'el seeds at low temperature and low oxygen concentration, is due to a higher endogenous level of GA and a better seed coat permeability to oxygen.  相似文献

Abstract— The kinetic behavior of glutamate decarboxylase from mouse brain was analyzed in a wide range of glutamate and pyridoxal 5′-phosphate concentrations, approaching three limit conditions: (I) in the absence of glutamate-pyridoxal phosphate Schiff base; (II) when all glutamate is trapped in the form of Schiff base; (III) when all pyridoxal phosphate is trapped in the form of Schiff base. The experimental results in limit condition (I) are consistent with the existence of two different enzyme activities, one dependent and the other independent of free pyridoxal phosphate. The results obtained in limit conditions (II) and (III) give further support to this postulation. These data show that the free pyridoxal phosphate-dependent activity can be abolished when either all substrate or all cofactor are in the form of Schiff base. The free pyridoxal phosphate-independent activity is also abolished when all substrate is trapped as Schiff base, but it is not affected by the conversion of free pyridoxal phosphate into the Schiff base. A kinetic and mechanistic model for brain glutamate decarboxylase activity, which accounts for these observations as well as for the results of previous dead end-inhibition studies, is postulated. Computer simulations of this model, using the experimentally obtained kinetic constants, reproduced all the observed features of the enzyme behavior. The possible implications of the kinetic model for the regulation of the enzyme activity are discussed.  相似文献

Summary The relationship between the Fcu controlling-element system and the spotted-dilute R system was investigated. The Fcu controlling-element system consists of the receptor element allele r-cu and the regulatory element Fcu. The equivalent components of the spotted-dilute R system are respectively R-r#2 (or R-r#2 Dil) and Spf. The R-r#2 allele of the latter system was shown to be responsive (mutable) to Fcu, provided that it has had an uninterrupted association with Dil or Dpf as evidenced by the color variegation of the aleurone tissue. The reverse test, in which the r-cu allele of the Fcu controlling element system was tested for its response to Spf, proved negative. This was surprising in view of the relationship and specificity between systems. The possibility was considered that maize controlling elements may have different sizes as is known for bacterial insertion sequences. —The variable dilute pigmenting capacity of the r-cu allele also was studied. The iterative scheme described by Milstein [6] is used to estimate the rate constants of a model describing an inducible enzyme system. The model was formulated by Heinmets [5], and was mathematically analyzed by Roth and Roth [9] using Bellman's quasilinearization technique. The method used in this article makes use of multiple trajectories of the system to obtain a set of parameters which fit the data of all trajectories simultaneously. A comparison of the numerical results is presented. The data used in the calculations were generated in a similar way to that of Roth and Roth. However, we introduce into each datum 5% noise from a random number generator uniformly distributed [0,1].  相似文献

The distribution of root biomass and physical and chemical properties of the soils were studied in a semideciduous and in a lower montane rain forest in Panama. Roots and soil samples were taken by means of soil cores (25 cm deep) and divided into five, 5-cm deep sections. Soils were wet-sieved to retrieve the roots that were classified in four diameter classes: very fine roots (<1 mm), fine roots (1–2 mm), medium roots (2–5 mm) and coarse roots (5–50 mm). Soil samples were analyzed for organic carbon, total nitrogen, available phosphorus, exchangeable bases, cation exchange capacity, pH, aluminium and exchangeable acidity. Total root biomass measured with the soil corer (roots <50 mm in diameter) was not different between the forests (9.45 t ha-1), while biomass of very fine roots was larger in the mountains (2.00 t ha-1) than in the lowlands (1.44 t ha-1). The soils in the semideciduous forest were low in available phosphorus, while in the mountains, soils had low pH, high exchangeable aluminium and exchangeable acidity, and low concentration of exchangeable bases. Phosphorus was in high concentration only in the first 5 cm of the soil. In both forests, there was an exponential reduction of root biomass with increasing depth, and most of the variation in the vertical distribution of roots less than 2 mm in diameter was explained by the concentration of nitrogen in the soils. The results of this study support the hypothesis that a large root biomass in montane forests is related to nutrients in low concentration and diluted in organic soils with high CEC and low bulk density, and that fine root biomass in tropical forests in inversely related to calcium availability but not a phosphorus as has been suggested for other forests.  相似文献

2-carboxyarabinitol 1-phosphate (CA 1-P) is a naturally occurring inhibitor of ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (Rubisco). Members of the Fabaceae exhibit a particularly wide range in the extent of CA 1-P accumulation during darkness and include Phaseolus vulgaris, whose dark/light regulation of Rubisco activity is principally achieved by synthesis/degradation of CA 1-P. An extensive survey of the degree of dark inhibition of Rubisco was undertaken for the subfamily Papilionoideae to elucidate evolutionary patterns in the occurrence of this regulatory mechanism. Seventy-five species from 21 tribes were examined. Dark inhibition of Rubisco was found in ancestral tribes such as the Sophoreae, but was substantially reduced or absent in representative species of three more recently evolved tribes, Cicereae, Hedysareae and Vicieae. We conclude that regulation of Rubisco by CA 1-P is neither of recent origin nor of restricted distribution among the Papilionoideae. On the contrary, it becomes lost or less pronounced only in a minority of the more evolutionarily advanced species in this important subfamily.  相似文献

Summary The white-rot fungus Ganoderma australis selectively degrades lignin in the ecosystem palo podrido. Using conditions that simulate those of palo podrido in the laboratory, it was found that low nitrogen content and low O2 tension stimulate the productio of manganese peroxidase and lignin degradation, and depress cellulose degradation and cellulase production. The inverse is found at high nitrogen concentration and high O2 tension. This agrees with previous results indicating that low O2 tension and low nitrogen stimulate selective lignin degradation by this fungus. Correspondence to: J. Eyzaguirre  相似文献
