The impact of lead as an environmental pollutant on the I-131 uptake and retention in rat thyroid was assayed alone and in combination with lithium treatment. Lead treatment significantly stimulated the 2- and 24-h uptake of I-131 in the thyroid, and the 24-h uptake showed the maximum stimulation after 3 mo of lead treatment. On the contrary, lithium supplementation reduced the uptake significantly and the maximum decrease was noticed after 2 mo of lithium administration. Further, simultaneous lead and lithium treatment resulted in more pronounced increase in the uptake of I-131 by the thyroid, which was maximum after 3 mo of combined treatment. The thyroidal biological half-life of I-131 (T biol) was found to be increased significantly following lead and lithium treatments when given separately. Interestingly, combined lead and lithium treatment given up to 2 mo further prolonged theT biol of I-131, thus reflecting its increased retention. 相似文献

Five sources of nitrogen, six minerals, six enzyme inducers and one each of growth as well as product promotors were screened by Plackett-Burman design, consisting of a total of 20 experiments for the above 19 sources/categories of medium ingredients, for their effect on the production of alpha-galactosidase by Aspergillus niger MRSS 234 in solid state fermentation system. The enzyme production was recorded from 2 to 5 days of fermentation. Data on enzyme titres was analysed by compatible analysis to obtain regression coefficients and t-ratios. Among the nitrogen sources, urea contributed positively to enzyme production and its effect increased with the fermentation time, in contrast to negative effect of all the ammonium salts used. Corn steep liquor, citric acid and legume seed flours showed significantly positive effects on enzyme production, though lactose showed negative effect upto 3 days of fermentation and then turned positive but not significantly. Calcium chloride and ferrous sulphate showed considerable negative effect, in contrast to mixed effect by other mineral salts studied. Among the legume seed flours, guar and French bean flours showed larger positive effects. The studies allowed the selection of urea, corn steep liquor, guar flour, soy bean flour and citric acid as most promising sources/categories for further optimization studies based on the effects as well as their trend with fermentation time. The use of Plackett-Burman design for rapid screening of large number of nutrients, in a very small number of experiments, for reliable short-listing of a few of most effective sources/categories for further optimization, has been scarce in submerged fermentation and never attempted earlier in solid state fermentation system.Authors are thankful to Dr. S. Logistic model, based on more general and realistic assumptions, has been derived to express the production of two non-growth associated enzymes by Bacillus licheniformis M27 in a solid state fermentation system. The model explained the production of alpha-amylase and neutral protease with correlation coefficients ranging between 0.974 and 0.985 in basal and standardized wheat bran media. It is apparent from the values of parameters in the model that the rate constant in standardized medium was lower (0.15 l/h?1) than in the basal medium (0.32 l/h?1), though higher maximum enzyme titres (1.7 times) were observed in the former medium. The data thus indicate dependence of enzyme titres on the maximum biomass formed. The model represents a significant advance in model formulation as it recognizes and takes care of all other products (enzymes etc) formed during fermentation. The model may prove useful in optimizing product synthesis, design of bioreactor and determination of harvest time, especially due to its adequacy and efficiency. Models for predicting product formation in solid state fermentation system are scarce and confined to fungal fermentations. No such model for bacterial solid state fermentation system was available earlier. 相似文献

A simple and rapid technique is reported for the preliminary screening of fungi-toxic extracts/samples by direct spotting onto silica gel plates and subsequent over-spraying with a fungal spore suspension. An experimental model of protein calorie malnutrition (PCM) was created in young rhesus monkeys. Ulnar and tibial nerves from six monkeys with PCM, six rehabilitated and 12 control monkeys were studied for lipid composition and activity of myelin marker enzyme. Total lipids, myelin marker lipids and activity of myelin marker enzyme, 2', 3'-cyclic nucleotide 3' - phosphohydrolase were decreased, while esterified cholesterol and free fatty acids were increased in PCM as compared to controls. Summary Soil nitrate profiles under seven treatments of an experiment on intercropping in row crops were studied at sowing and the after harvesting of different crops. The estimates of NO3
––N in these profiles indicate that intercropping in the row crops grown during the rainy season considerably reduced leaching loss of nitrates. Where the main crop receives the recommended fertilizer amount and the intercrop a small additional application, intercropping greatly reduced the amount of unutilized nitrates and hence their leaching beyong root zone. 相似文献
