Repeated 99mTc-Sestamibi studies for the evaluation of salvaged myocardium and of its relationship with postinfarction ischemia.

Pre- and post-treatment myocardial scans with 99mTc-Sestamibi demonstrated effective reperfusion after thrombolysis in a patient with acute myocardial infarction. Late follow-up images showed at rest a further noteworthy reduction of the uptake defect and that during exercise a large part of the salvaged territory became ischemic. This report demonstrates that a remarkable amount of myocardium in the posttreatment images was hibernated; furthermore, it was possible to visualize directly that the salvaged territory is the actual site of exercise induced postinfarction ischemia.     

Ultra rapid calcium events in electrically stimulated frog nerve terminals.

Fast calcium events occurring in cytoplasmic organelles after a single electrical stimulus were investigated by electron spectroscopic imaging (an electron microscope technique that reveals total calcium with high sensitivity and spatial resolution) in quick frozen presynaptic terminals of the frog neuromuscular junction. In resting preparations synaptic vesicles showed a prominent calcium signal whereas mitochondria were mostly negative and only some of the cisternae of the endoplasmic reticulum were clearly positive. In preparations quick frozen 10 ms after the application to the nerve of a single, supramaximal electric stimulus, no obvious change was observed in synaptic vesicles, while calcium levels rose to high values in the endoplasmic reticulum cisternae and in the matrix of mitochondria. Voltage-induced influx of Ca(2+) within synaptic terminals appears therefore to induce an extremely rapid uptake into selected organelles. The possible physiological role of this response is discussed.     

Enamel hypoplasia and age at weaning in 19th-century Florence,Italy

A sample representing a population of the Florence district of middle 19th century was studied to determine the age of occurrence of enamel hypoplasias. The age interval most affected was that between 1.5 and 3.5 years. Historical sources on weaning habits of 19th-century Italian populations indicate a weaning period between 12 and 18 months. This is in agreement with the data on enamel defects, showing that children of post-weaning age are more subject to stress. Wide “grooves”, with prolonged duration, are concentrated between 2 and 2.5 years, whereas “lines” occur primarily between 2.5 and 3 years. We suggest that this distribution could reflect the gradual introduction of dietary supplements until weaning is complete. © 1994 Wiley-Liss, Inc.
