We asked whether, during the postnatal period, the daily patterns of body temperature (Tb), heart rate (HR) and breathing frequency (f) begin and develop in synchrony. To this end, measurements of HR, f and Tb were performed weekly, on two consecutive days, for the first two postnatal months on puppies of three breeds of dogs (Rottweiler, Cocker Spaniel and Carlino dogs) with very different birth weights and postnatal growth patterns. Ambient conditions and feeding habits were constant for all puppies. The results indicated that (1) the 24-h average Tb increased and average HR and f decreased with growth, (2) the daily rhythms in Tb were apparent by 4 weeks, irrespective of the puppy’s growth pattern, (3) the daily rhythm of Tb in the puppy was not necessarily following that of the mother; in fact, it could anticipate it. (4) The daily rhythms in HR and f were not apparent for the whole study period. We conclude that in neonatal dogs the onset of the daily rhythms of Tb has no obvious relationship with body size or rate of growth and is not cued by the maternal Tb rhythm. The daily rhythms of HR and f do not appear before 2 months of age. Hence, they are not in synchrony with those of Tb.  相似文献

The major histocompatibility complex (MHC) is an extraordinarily diverse cluster of genes that play a key role in the immune system. MHC gene products are also found in various body secretions, leading to the suggestion that MHC genotypes are linked to unique individual odourtypes that animals use to assess the suitability of other individuals as potential mates or social partners. We investigated the relationship between chemical odour profiles and genotype in a large, naturally reproducing population of mandrills, using gas chromatography–mass spectrometry and MHC genotyping. Odour profiles were not linked to the possession of particular MHC supertypes. Sex influenced some measures of odour diversity and dominance rank influenced some measures of odour diversity in males, but not in females. Odour similarity was strongly related to similarity at the MHC, and, in some cases, to pedigree relatedness. Our results suggest that odour provides both a cue of individual genetic quality and information against which the receiver can compare its own genotype to assess genetic similarity. These findings provide a potential mechanism underlying mate choice for genetic diversity and MHC similarity as well as kin selection.  相似文献

The diurnal and seasonal regulation of the complex burrowing behavior of Nephrops norvegicus complicates population assessment for this species. Population assessment is traditionally carried out by Virtual Population Analysis (Length Cohort Analysis; LCA) and swept area density estimations from catch data. However, burrow counting from visual surveys has also acquired increasing importance in recent years as an alternative and apparently efficient method. All these approaches produced non-equivalent assessment results in the literature, and therefore, a comparison and critical discussion of these methods is warranted. In this review, we pursued this goal by using already published and unpublished fishery data for a commercially exploited western Mediterranean shelf (60–100 m) population as an example. The cross-assessment was carried out by LCA, the swept area method and burrow counting in different seasons (spring-summer and autumn–winter) to highlight biases in abundance estimations in relation to Nephrops behavior. We also used novel trawl density data for other fish and decapod species in the area because the burrowing behavior of these species may deeply bias Nephrops abundance in visual surveys. LCA provided intermediate assessment values when compared to the swept area and photographic estimates, which over- and underestimated the abundance, respectively. We reviewed the problems related to the peculiar burrowing behavior of the species that generate assessment estimations of such different magnitude.  相似文献

Background  

Preterm birth is still the leading cause of neonatal morbidity and mortality. The level of corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH) is known to be significantly elevated in the maternal plasma at preterm birth. Although, CRH, CRH-binding protein (CRH-BP), CRH-receptor 1 (CRH-R1) and CRH-R2 have been identified both at mRNA and protein level in human placenta, deciduas, fetal membranes, endometrium and myometrium, no corresponding information is yet available on cervix. Thus, the aim of this study was to compare the levels of the mRNA species coding for CRH, CRH-BP, CRH-R1 and CRH-R2 in human cervical tissue and myometrium at preterm and term labor and not in labor as well as in the non-pregnant state, and to localize the corresponding proteins employing immunohistochemical analysis.  相似文献

Vitamin D is essential for the maintenance and promotion of musculoskeletal health, for the functioning of the immune, cardiovascular and reproductive systems, and its main action is to keep calcium and phosphate plasmatic physiological concentrations at intestinal, renal and bony level. Vitamin D affects several parameters related to physical performance too and a particularly high percentage of vitamin D insufficiency and deficiency in professional athletes has been observed. Several variables are able to impair the synthesis of 25(OH)D in athletes, specifically both genetic and environmental factors, but the most probable explanation for the deficient/insufficient vitamin D levels is the insufficient ultraviolet B light (UVB) exposure during winter. To confirm this, the existence of a circannual rhythm of vitamin D in professional soccer players, highlighting a peak in summer and lowest values in winter regardless the period of the season, has been documented. Nonetheless, from what we are aware of, no other study adopted a chronobiologic approach to better understand and describe the circannual variations of serum 25(OH)D in other sport disciplines. Therefore, we studied serum vitamin D in a cohort of top-level professional skiers, during a period of three consecutive competitive seasons (2015, 2016 and 2017), in order to evaluate, with a rhythmometric approach, the vitamin D behavior along the year. The study population was composed by 152 professional Italian alpine skiers of FISI (Winter Sport Italian Federation), 63 females and 89 males (mean age: 24.1 ± 3.2 years) and a total of 298 blood drawings were carried out to determine plasma 25(OH)D. Vitamin D data were compared between genders and then processed with the population mean cosinor tests to evaluate the presence of a circannual rhythm, both for female and male athletes. In total, 77 skiers (50.7%) showed, at least once during the three competitive seasons, an insufficient level of 25(OH)D and other 45 subjects (29.6%) showed a deficient status; no differences were observed between genders (mean for females: 26.9 ± 8.1 ng/mL; mean for males: 27.4 ± 7.6 ng/mL). In addition, the rhythmometric analysis highlighted the existence of a significant circannual rhythm for both female and male professional skiers; the acrophases (Φ) occurred in July and both MESOR (M) and amplitude (A) were comparable between the two groups. Our data indicate that, despite the physical effort spent, vitamin D follows a classical season-associated rhythm with a peak in summer and a nadir in winter. Moreover, the percentage of insufficiency and deficiency is in line with that of the general population. In conclusion, our findings reinforce the hypothesis that there is no direct effect of physical activity on vitamin D metabolism and that the factors involved in the determination of vitamin D levels in the general population are valid also for athletes.  相似文献

Homologous recombination is triggered by nucleolytic degradation (resection) of DNA double‐strand breaks (DSBs). DSB resection requires the Mre11‐Rad50‐Xrs2 (MRX) complex, which promotes the activity of Exo1 nuclease through a poorly understood mechanism. Here, we describe the Mre11‐R10T mutant variant that accelerates DSB resection compared to wild‐type Mre11 by potentiating Exo1‐mediated processing. This increased Exo1 resection activity leads to a decreased association of the Ku complex to DSBs and an enhanced DSB resection in G1, indicating that Exo1 has a direct function in preventing Ku association with DSBs. Molecular dynamics simulations show that rotation of the Mre11 capping domains is able to induce unwinding of double‐strand DNA (dsDNA). The R10T substitution causes altered orientation of the Mre11 capping domain that leads to persistent melting of the dsDNA end. We propose that MRX creates a specific DNA end structure that promotes Exo1 resection activity by facilitating the persistence of this nuclease on the DSB ends, uncovering a novel MRX function in DSB resection.  相似文献
