As the success rates of IVF clinics improve, one of the adverse consequences is the increased incidence of twins, due largely to the number of embryos transferred. Even if the number of embryos transferred is restricted to two, the twinning rate can exceed 40% of the pregnancies. An obvious way to reduce this high twin rate would be to transfer only one embryo. This would require that cryopreservation of the supernumerary embryos be efficacious enough so that the chance of achieving an ongoing pregnancy is not diminished by transferring a single embryo in the stimulated cycle. Previous studies utilising embryos on day 2 and 3 of development have shown that the pregnancy rates can be acceptable (about 40%) and that the cumulative rate can be up to 60%. Most of these studies, however, do not include a comparison with the cumulative pregnancy rate with two embryos transferred in the stimulated cycle. Therefore, the efficacy has not been proven. We present clinical data from the past few years to illustrate the increase in success rates and the concomitant increase in twinning rates. The increased success in the cryopreservation program has enabled us to trial a single embryo transfer program and compare the results to the transfer of two embryos. The possible alliance between Gaertnera and Pagamea (Rubiaceae-Rubioideae), two genera from the Old and New World, respectively, is investigated on the basis of wood anatomy and pollen morphology. Nowadays, the main point of discussion about the taxonomic position of these genera is whether they belong to the Psychotrieae or constitute a tribe Gaertnereae characterised by their secondarily superior ovary and sheathing stipules. Both the wood and pollen of the genus pair are found to show specific features absent in other genera of the Psychotrieae, e.g. parenchyma bands in the xylem and endexine thickenings on the polar sites of the pollen apertures. Nevertheless Gaertnera and Pagamea share many other characters with the Psychotrieae. Wood and pollen convincingly demonstrate the very close affinity of the two genera. The sister pair differs in so many features from other Psychotrieae, that Gaertnera and Pagamea should constitute at least a subtribe Gaertnerinae, formally recognized here. The general lack of profound studies on the affinities within the very large tribe Psychotrieae makes further comments on the taxonomic relationships of the Gaertnerinae difficult. 相似文献

Resistant genotypes of the diploid tuber-bearing South American species Solarium arnezii x hondelmannii, S. berthaultii, S. leptophyes and S. microdontum were crossed with three diploid genotypes of S. tuberosum that varied in resistance and maturity type. The progenies were field tested for 2 years for resistance to a complex race of Phytophthora infestans. A wealth of genetic variation for resistance was found in most of the progenies. At least two susceptibility groups could be distinguished in some progenies of S. microdontum. This could be explained by the presence of several major resistance genes in the wild parent and, unexpectedly, in the susceptible parent SH 82-44-111. In most of the wild parents and in the susceptible parent SH 77-114-2988 there appeared to be minor resistance genes. General combining ability effects were predominant; small specific combining ability effects were detected in some crosses of S. microdontum. Gene action appeared dominant in some crosses. 相似文献

Brown trout ( Salmo trutta ) from anadromous River Lierelva, resident Lake Tunhovd, and resident Nordmarka stocks were exposed to Gyrodactylus salaris -infected salmon parr. The brown trout were fed pellets before the experiments, except for one group of the Nordmarka stock which was starved for 19 days before the experiments. The mean number of parasites declined directly and rapidly post infection for all groups of trout. There were no pronounced differences in resistance between the anadromous and the resident stocks. G. salaris infections tended to persist longer on starved than on fed trout of the Nordmarka stock. The maximum parasite persistence on trout was 50 days, and as parasite numbers increased on some fish parasite reproduction must have occurred on those trout. However, the limited susceptibility and marked innate resistance of trout to G. salaris establishment, development and reproduction, suggest parasite metapopulations will not survive on this species. Anaerobic metabolism of dimethylsulfoniopropionate, an osmolyte of marine algae, in anoxic intertidal sediments involves either cleavage to dimethylsulfide or demethylation to 3-S-methylmercaptopropionate (MMPA) and subsequently to 3-mercaptopropionate. The methanogenic archaea Methanosarcina sp. strain MTP4 (DSM 6636), Methanosarcina acetivorans DSM 2834, and Methanosarcina (Methanolobus) siciliae DSM 3028 were found to use MMPA as a growth substrate and to convert it stoichiometrically to 3-mercaptopropionate. Approximately 0.75 mol of methane was formed per mol of MMPA degraded; methanethiol was not detected as an intermediate. Eight other methanogenic strains did not carry out this conversion. We also studied the conversion of MMPA in anoxic marine sediment slurries. Addition of MMPA (500 (mu)M) resulted in the production of methanethiol which was subsequently converted to methane (417 (mu)M). In the presence of the antibiotics ampicillin, vancomycin, and kanamycin (20 (mu)g/ml each), 275 (mu)M methane was formed from 380 (mu)M MMPA; no methanethiol was formed during these incubations. Only methanethiol was formed from MMPA when 2-bromoethanesulfonate (25 mM) was added to a sediment suspension. Subclass and ordinal relationships ofLoasaceae, a small predominately New World family, are examined usingrbcL sequence data. Sequences were examined for eight of the fifteen genera of theLoasaceae and the morphologically anomalous aquatic genusHydrostachys (Hydrostachyaceae). Parsimony analyses of these sequences, combined with previously publishedrcbL data, indicate thatLoasaceae belong in theCornales, and are the sister group ofHydrangeaceae. This agrees with phylogenies based on chloroplast DNA inverted repeat restriction site, morphological and chemical data. TherbcL trees support the monophyly of theLoasaceae and most generic relationships correspond to current subfamily divisions. The aim of this paper is to understand how dispersal in a patchy environment influences the stability properties of tri-trophic metapopulations. Differential equation models for tri-trophic metapopulations are formulated and analysed. The patchy nature of the metapopulations is incorporated through dispersal phases. Two variants are studied: one with a dispersal phase for the top and one with a dispersal phase for the middle level. A complete characterisation of stable and unstable equilibria is given and the possibility of invasion in these food chains is studied. A dispersal phase for the middle level can destabilize the bottom level-middle level interaction, because of the delay that dispersal causes in the reaction to the resource. When the middle level is not efficiently controlled by the top level, the unstable bottom level-middle level pair can destabilize the entire food chain. Dispersal for the top level can destabilize in the same way. A characterisation of the long term behaviour of the models is given. Bistability with a stable three species equilibrium and a stable limit cycle is one of the possibilities. 相似文献

Summary Transfer RNA genes have been mapped to at least nine different loci on the physical map of the Euglena gracilis chloroplast genome. One of these loci in the ribosomal RNA operons is present three times per genome. The DNA sequences of six of the nine different loci, containing 21 different tRNA genes, have been determined. Genes corresponding to the amino acids Ala, Arg, Asn, Cys, Gln, Gly (2), Glu, His, Ile, Leu (2), Met (2), Phe, Ser, Thr, Trp, Tyr, Val, and one unassigned species have been identified. All genes except one are found in clusters of 2–6 genes. None of the known genes contains introns, nor codes for the 3-CCA terminus. Formation of bilirubin monoglucuronide from unconjugated bilirubin requires a microsomal enzyme, UDP-glucuronate glucuronyltransferase (EC 2.4.1.17). Conversion of bilirubin monoglucuronide to bilirubin diglucuronide, the major bilirubin conjugate in bile, was studied in subcellular fractions of rat liver. The highest specific activity for bilirubin diglucuronide formation occurred in a fraction highly enriched in plasma membranes. Studies of reaction stoichiometry and utilization of UDP-D-[14C]glucuronic acid revealed that conversion of bilirubin monoglucuronide to bilirubin diglucuronide is not catalyzed by UDP-glucuronyltransferase, and results from transglucuronidation of bilirubin monoglucuronide, with formation of bilirubin diglucuronide and unconjugated bilirubin. When unconjugated bilirubin was infused intravenously into rats at rates exceeding the maximal hepatic excretory capacity, bilirubin monoglucuronide accumulated in serum and bilirubin diglucuronide was found exclusively in bile as the predominant bilirubin metabolite. These results suggest that formation of bilirubin diglucuronide occurs at the surface membrane of the liver cell. Conversion of bilirubin monoglucuronide to bilirubin diglucuronide may play a role in the transport of bilirubin glucuronides from liver to bile. 相似文献
