A predator’s body size correlates with its prey size. Change in the diet may call for changes in the hunting mode and traits determining hunting success. We explored long-term trends in sternum size and shape in the northern goshawk by applying geometric morphometrics. Tetraonids, the primary prey of the goshawk, have decreased and been replaced by smaller birds in the diet. We expected that the size of the goshawk has decreased accordingly more in males than females based on earlier observations of outer morphology. We also expected changes in sternum shape as a function of changes in hunting mode. Size of both sexes has decreased during the preceding decades (1962?2008), seemingly reflecting a shift in prey size and hunting mode. Female goshawks hunting also mammalian prey tend to have a pronouncedly “Buteo-type” sternum compared to males preying upon birds. Interestingly, the shrinkage of body size resulted in an increasingly “Buteo-type” sternum in both sexes. In addition, the sternum shape in birds that died accidentally (i.e., fit individuals) was more Buteo-type than in starved ones, hinting that selection was towards a Buteo-type sternum shape. We conclude that these observed patterns are likely due to directional selection driven by changes in the diet towards smaller and more agile prey. On the other hand, global warming is predicted to also cause a decrease in size, thus these two scenarios are inseparable. Because of difficulties in studying fitness-related phenotypic changes of large raptors in the field, time series of museum exemplars collected over a wide geographical area may give answers to this conundrum.  相似文献

Direct, quantitative capillary electrophoresis–electrospray ionisation mass spectrometric (CE–ESI-MS) and tandem mass spectrometric (CE–ESI-MS–MS) methods are described for the quantitation of 3-O-glucuronides of E- and Z-entacapone isomers (EEG and EZG) and tolcapone (TG) in urine. 3-O-Glucuronide of nitecapone was used as internal standard. Good separation of glucuronides was achieved with 20 mM ammonium acetate as separation solution at pH 6.84. Stacking was used to increase the sensitivity of the method by introducing samples in 5 mM ammonium acetate. CE–ESI-MS and CE–ESI-MS–MS methods are linear with correlation coefficients better than 0.9983 and 0.9982, and repeatable with relative standard deviations below 9 and 14%, respectively. The limit of detection (LOD) in CE–ESI-MS at signal-to-noise ratio 3 is 100 ng/ml for EEG and EZG and 250 ng/ml for TG. The CE–ESI-MS–MS method was the more sensitive; LOD was 7 ng/ml for all compounds, without any concentration of the sample.  相似文献

Interest in climate change effects on groundwater has increased dramatically during the last decade. The mechanisms of climate‐related groundwater depletion have been thoroughly reviewed, but the influence of global warming on groundwater‐dependent ecosystems (GDEs) remains poorly known. Here we report long‐term water temperature trends in 66 northern European cold‐water springs. A vast majority of the springs (82%) exhibited a significant increase in water temperature during 1968–2012. Mean spring water temperatures were closely related to regional air temperature and global radiative forcing of the corresponding year. Based on three alternative climate scenarios representing low (RCP2.6), intermediate (RCP6) and high‐emission scenarios (RCP8.5), we estimate that increase in mean spring water temperature in the region is likely to range from 0.67 °C (RCP2.6) to 5.94 °C (RCP8.5) by 2086. According to the worst‐case scenario, water temperature of these originally cold‐water ecosystems (regional mean in the late 1970s: 4.7 °C) may exceed 12 °C by the end of this century. We used bryophyte and macroinvertebrate species data from Finnish springs and spring‐fed streams to assess ecological impacts of the predicted warming. An increase in spring water temperature by several degrees will likely have substantial biodiversity impacts, causing regional extinction of native, cold‐stenothermal spring specialists, whereas species diversity of headwater generalists is likely to increase. Even a slight (by 1 °C) increase in water temperature may eliminate endemic spring species, thus altering bryophyte and macroinvertebrate assemblages of spring‐fed streams. Climate change‐induced warming of northern regions may thus alter species composition of the spring biota and cause regional homogenization of biodiversity in headwater ecosystems.  相似文献

Abstract: We have studied 14 patients with different grades of astrocytomas using 1H NMR spectroscopy in vivo. Typically, astrocytomas exhibited a low N -acetyl-aspartate peak, a prominent signal from choline group-containing compounds, and lactate in the 1H NMR spectra in vivo. The uncorrected choline/creatine + phosphocreatine peak area ratios were higher in tumors than in normal brain tissue. Absolute concentration of choline-containing compounds (1.74 ± 0.09 mmol/L) in the normal brain tissue was not different in any grade of astrocytoma, but total creatine concentration in healthy brain (7.49 ± 0.30 mmol/L) was higher than that in grade IV astrocytomas (4.84 ± 0.89 mmol/L). Relaxation constants of choline-containing compounds did not differ in tumors from those determined in normal brain. Perchloric acid extracts of biopsy samples from 35 astrocytomas and 13 samples of normal temporal white matter were analyzed with 1H NMR. Total concentration of choline-containing compounds did not differ between controls and any grade of astrocytoma when the quantification was done in vitro. It is interesting that phosphorylcholine concentration was about twofold greater in grade IV astrocytomas than in controls or other grades of astrocytomas. We conclude that high phosphorylcholine in grade IV astrocytomas may be an indicator of degree of malignancy. The proportional changes within the group of choline-containing compounds observed in vitro were not reflected in the NMR properties of choline signal in vivo.  相似文献

The whole genome approach enables the characterization of all components of any given biological pathway. Moreover, it can help to uncover all the metabolic routes for any molecule. Here we have used the genome of Drosophila melanogaster to search for enzymes involved in the metabolism of fucosylated glycans. Our results suggest that in the fruit fly GDP-fucose, the donor for fucosyltransferase reactions, is formed exclusively via the de novo pathway from GDP-mannose through enzymatic reactions catalyzed by GDP-D-mannose 4,6-dehydratase (GMD) and GDP-4-keto-6-deoxy-D-mannose 3,5-epimerase/4-reductase (GMER, also known as FX in man). The Drosophila genome does not have orthologs for the salvage pathway enzymes, i.e. fucokinase and GDP-fucose pyrophosphorylase synthesizing GDP-fucose from fucose. In addition we identified two novel fucosyltransferases predicted to catalyze alpha1,3- and alpha1,6-specific linkages to the GlcNAc residues on glycans. No genes with the capacity to encode alpha1,2-specific fucosyltransferases were found. We also identified two novel genes coding for O-fucosyltransferases and a gene responsible for a fucosidase enzyme in the Drosophila genome. Finally, using the Drosophila CG4435 gene, we identified two novel human genes putatively coding for fucosyltransferases. This work can serve as a basis for further whole-genome approaches in mapping all possible glycosylation pathways and as a basic analysis leading to subsequent experimental studies to verify the predictions made in this work.  相似文献

The biocontrol agent Phlebiopsis gigantea has been intensively applied to the surface of Picea abies stumps to control Heterobasidion root rot. But little is known about the possible impact of this treatment on the resident bacteria community in the stumps. High throughput DNA bar-coded pyrosequencing was used to characterize the diversity of bacteria in the stumps of P. abies at 1, 6 and 13 years after treatment with P. gigantea. The sequences were classified into 12 phyla and 160 genera, of which Proteobacteria and Acidobacteria were the most abundant groups over time. Moreover, at the initial stages of decay, Proteobacteria were the most abundant whereas Acidobacteria were the most common at advanced stages of decay. Treatment with P. gigantea led to significant increase of the genus Acidobacteria-Gp1 at 1 year after treatment. The analysis of observed and estimated operational taxonomic units (OTUs) as well as diversity indices revealed that P. gigantea treatment significantly decreased the initial bacterial richness in the stumps, but the bacterial community gradually recovered and the negative effects of P. gigantea was attenuated. These results provide additional insight on the risk assessment as well as environmental impact on the long-term use of P. gigantea in the control of Heterobasidion root rot in conifer forests.  相似文献

The relationships between serum levels of zinc and copper and sexual maturation were analyzed in 2291 9-18-yr-old Finnish girls and boys. Development of public hair, breasts, and genitalia were used to grade maturation according to Tanner's classification. Serum zinc and sexual maturation were not related. However, 15- and 18-yr-old girls who had matured most slowly had low serum levels of zinc compared with their age mates. Thus, sexual maturation seems not to be affected by zinc deficiency in Finland; effects of zinc status on maturation in some minor groups cannot, however, be excluded. Serum copper levels were associated with age and sexual maturation, which complicates the drawing of conclusions about possible deficiencies.  相似文献

Abstract. Reclamation of former, degraded forest lands occupied by Imperata cylindrica is one of the crucial environmental and forestry issues in the humid tropics, notably Southeast Asia. We suggest that it is possible to gradually restore the original natural forest cover with the help of a sacrifice fallow crop of fast-growing exotic tree species. Recently, a set of suitable fast-growing plantation tree species has been identified and stand establishment methods developed for this purpose. We assessed the regeneration of natural vegetation in stands of different plantation tree species and evaluated the ecological impact of species composition in the plantation understorey. PCA ordination, regression analysis and analysis of covariance were applied at different stages of the study. We found a marked vegetational resemblance between stands dominated by Acacia mangium: they had the highest number of indigenous trees in their understorey, whereas stands of other plantation trees supported more diverse grass and herb vegetation. A high proportion of evergreen woody vegetation reduces the risk of fire and grass competition and enhances secondary succession towards natural forest.  相似文献

This paper is an attempt, using statistical modelling techniques, to understand the patterns of vascular plant species richness at the poorly studied meso-scale within a relatively unexplored subarctic zone. Species richness is related to floristic-environmental composite variables, using occurrence data of vascular plants and environmental and spatial predictor variables in 362 1 km2 grid squares in the Kevo Nature Reserve. Species richness is modelled in two different way. First, by detecting the major floristic-environmental gradients with the ordination procedure of canonical correspondence analysis, and subsequently relating these ordination axes to species richness by generalized linear modelling. Second, species richness is directly related to the composite environmental factors of explanatory variables, using partial least squares regression. The most important explanatory variables, as suggested by both approaches, are relatively similar, and largely reflect the influence of altitude or altitudinally related variables in the models. The most prominent floristic gradient in the data runs from alpine habitats to river valleys, and this gradient is the main source of variation in species richness. Some local environmental variables are also relatively important predictors; the grid squares rich in vascular plant taxa are mainly located in the lowlands of the reserve and are characterised by rivers and brooks, as well as by abundant cliff walls. The two statistical models account for approximately the same amount of variation in the species richness, with more than half of the variation unexplained. Potential reasons for the relatively modest fit are discussed, and the results are compared to the characteristics of the diversity-environment relationships at both broader- and finer-scales.  相似文献
