The effects of 24 hr cycle skeleton photoperiodic schedulesinvolving two short light pulses on flowering in Lemna perpusillahave been studied. Simulation of complete photoperiods by correspondingskeletal ones is nearly perfect for all photoperiods up to 8hr and is unstable for periods of 9 to 13 hr. A jump in theresponse phase appears when skeleton photoperiods ranging from12 to 13hr are given. For all skeleton photoperiods longer than14 hr the phase is entrained so that it agrees with that givenby skeleton photoperiods of complemental lengths. That is, askeleton photoperiod of 18 hr is equivalent to that of 6 (=2418) hr. Simulation is largely related to whether thesecond pulse is locked on to "dawn" or to "sunset" dependingon when it falls during the dark period following the firstpulse. The inductive action of skeleton photoperiods that gives unstableentrainment depends on the length of a preliminary dark periodgiven before the plant receives the first pulse, since in theseskeleton schedules the sensitive zone to the second pulse shiftswith the length of the preliminary darkness. Thus, we tentatively conclude that the circadian oscillationin L. perpusilla involves an entrainment mechanism and thatphotoperiodic induction is contingent on the coincidence oflight and a specific inductive phase in oscillation. Wolbachia infect a variety of arthropod and nematode hosts, but in arthropods, host phylogenetic relationships are usually poor predictors of strain similarity. This suggests that new infections are often established by horizontal transmission. To gain insight into the factors affecting the probability of horizontal transmission among host species, we ask how host phylogeny, geographical distribution and ecology affect patterns of Wolbachia strain similarity. We used multilocus sequence typing (MLST) to characterize Wolbachia strain similarity among dipteran hosts associated with fleshy mushrooms. Wolbachia Supergroup A was more common than Supergroup B in Diptera, and also more common in mycophagous than non‐mycophagous Diptera. Within Supergroup A, host family within Diptera had no effect on strain similarity, and there was no tendency for Wolbachia strains from sympatric host species to be more similar to one another than to strains from hosts in different biogeographical realms. Supergroup A strains differed between mycophagous and non‐mycophagous Diptera more than expected by chance, suggesting that ecological associations can facilitate horizontal transmission of Wolbachia within mycophagous fly communities. For Supergroup B, there were no significant associations between strain similarity and host phylogeny, biogeography, or ecology. We identified only two cases in which closely related hosts carried closely related Wolbachia strains, evidence that Wolbachia‐host co‐speciation or early introgression can occur but may not be a major contributor to overall strain diversity. Our results suggest that horizontal transmission of Wolbachia can be influenced by host ecology, thus leading to partial restriction of Wolbachia strains or strain groups to particular guilds of insects. 相似文献

1. Explaining resource–diversity relationships is a long‐standing goal in ecology, and there is currently little consensus as to the relative contributions of neutral versus a variety of proposed niche‐related mechanisms. 2. The resource–diversity relationship of insect detritivores was examined in a survey of 25 small, parallel streams flowing into the Bay of Fundy in eastern Canada, with the objective of determining whether neutral processes (sampling effects) could account for the observed patterns. 3. Detritivore taxonomic richness showed a positive, but decelerating relationship with quantity of detritus. Richness also increased with catchment area and with stream permanence. 4. Species distribution patterns were significantly nested, and low resource streams (little detritus) tended to have species with large ranges (i.e. found in many or most streams). 5. Sampling effects could explain only part of the positive relationship between richness and detrital resources, but accounted for the species richness–area relationship. 6. Two mechanisms that could potentially increase niche space as resource abundance increased were rejected: there was no evidence that riparian forest diversity or beta diversity increased with detrital resources. 7. Two niche‐related mechanisms were consistent with existing data, but will require further testing. First, flood disturbance may decrease species richness by eliminating species that require benign habitat, and lowering detritus retention, producing a positive correlation between detritivore richness and resources. Second, large wood in streams located in older riparian forest may increase habitat heterogeneity (number of niches) and the retention of organic matter, again leading to a positive relationship between detritivore diversity and detrital resources. 8. It was concluded that the positive ‘productivity–diversity’ relationship for stream detritivores was most likely produced in part by sampling effects, but also by ecological processes (disturbance and succession) that simultaneously influence resource level and niche availability. 相似文献

Several reports have described host species diversity and identity as the most important factors influencing disease risk, producing either dilution or amplification of the pathogen in a host community. Triatomine vectors, mammals and the protozoan Trypanosoma cruzi (Trypanosomatida: Trypanosomatidae) Chagas are involved in the wild cycle of Chagas disease, in which infection of mammals occurs by contamination of mucous membranes or skin abrasions with insect‐infected faeces. We examined the extent to which host diversity and identity determine the infection level observed in vector populations (i.e. disease risk in humans). We recorded infection in triatomine colonies and on the coexisting host mammalian species in semi‐arid Chile. Host diversity, and total and infected host species densities are used as predictor variables for disease risk. Disease risk did not correlate with host diversity changes. However, the densities of each infected rodent species were positively associated with disease risk. We suggest that the infected host density surrounding the vector colonies is a relevant variable for disease risk and should be considered to understand disease dynamics. It is crucial to pay attention on the spatial scale of analysis, considering the pattern of vector dispersal, when the relationship between host diversity and disease risk is studied. 相似文献

Abstract: The scalpelliform genus Stramentum is described from upper Turonian–Coniacian (Upper Cretaceous) strata in the Mikasa area, Hokkaido (Japan), documenting the first record of the genus from the north-west Pacific Realm. The single articulated skeleton, which is horizontally embedded in a dark grey laminated mudstone, is specifically indeterminate because capitular plates are missing. However, peduncular morphology resembles that of S. ( S .) pulchellum (Sowerby Jr), which has been described from the Cenomanian–Turonian of Europe. The present record from Japan demonstrates that this cirripede genus had a wider geographic distribution than previously assumed during the youngest phase of its radiation. 相似文献

Spring barley is widely grown throughout the UK and significant yield loss can occur as a result of rabbit grazing. In a 3-yr trial, spring barley was grown in six enclosures following current agronomic procedures and was subjected to grazing by different population densities of rabbits. The annual yield loss at the end of the trial was 0.5% rabbit−1 ha−1. The yield loss per rabbit was calculated to be around 25 kg and the financial loss was calculated as £2.00 per rabbit at 1998 prices (approx. £80 tonne−1). Models allowing farmers to predict the levels and costs of damage by rabbits to winter wheat and for silage have already been developed. The results from this trial enable farmers to extend their predictions to include spring barley. The implications for this are discussed. 相似文献

Amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) genetic fingerprinting of 14 accessions of Chara curta and Chara aspera Willd., sampled across a range of habitats and morphologies in Britain, suggests that these taxa are part of the variation within a single species complex. Two primer combinations generating 397 fragments (97% of which were polymorphic), analysed by Jaccard's similarity coefficient and principal co-ordinate analysis, did not recover groups which reflect the current taxonomy. By contrast with the genetic study, a Gower general similarity coefficient and principal co-ordinate analysis of 52 morphological characters recovered the currently recognized species groups. A Mantel test showed no significant correlation between the genetic data and the morphological data, supporting the hypothesis that phenotypic variability in Chara L. is either to some extent environmentally induced or represents developmental stages.
