Although Southeast Asia is a global biodiversity hotspot, the tempo and mode of avian diversification there has not been well studied. We investigated the history of the diversification of an endemic Asian tropical bird, the Black-browed Barbet Megalaima oorti , by reconstructing its intraspecific molecular phylogeny with mitochondrial cytochrome- b gene sequences. Our molecular phylogeny suggests that the five subspecies of this montane barbet comprise four deeply divergent clades with strong geographical associations: M. o. oorti in the Malay Peninsula and Sumatra, M. o. annamensis in Vietnam, M. o. nuchalis in Taiwan and M. o. faber / M. o. sini in Hainan and the southeastern Chinese mainland, respectively. Climate changes from the mid-Pliocene to the Pleistocene may have influenced their diversification through repeated contraction and expansion of Asian tropical forest. Moreover, our data indicate that the Black-browed Barbet complex is not monophyletic: M. asiatica is embedded in our phylogeny as the sister taxon to M. o. annamensis . The present taxonomic treatment has combined evolutionarily distinct taxa into a single paraphyletic species. Based on our molecular data and previously published plumage characters, we suggest a revision of traditional M. oorti into four monophyletic species: M. oorti , M. nuchalis , M. annamensis and M. faber .  相似文献

It is well known that interconversion between prestalk and prespore cells occurs in 3-dimensional (3–D) isolates of Dictyostelium. The present work was undertaken to examine whether or not the interconversion occurs even in monolayer sheets. The results suggested that in monolayer sheets of either prespore or prestalk cells, the interconversion does not occur. Furthermore, effects of cAMP were examined in relation to the formation or loss of prespore vesicles (PSVs). In monolayer sheets, prespore cells retain their PSVs in the presence of cAMP, though they lose them in its absence. In 3–D masses, however, cAMP induces the conversion into stalk cells, stimulating PSV loss. In the case of prestalk cells, cAMP induces the maturation of prestalk cells to stalk cells in 3–D masses, but it does not induce stalk differentiation in monolayer sheets.
8-Bromo cAMP stimulates the maturation of prespore and prestalk cells into spore and stalk cells, respectively. However, the vegetative and the aggregative cells remain amoeboid even in its presence. These observations suggest that 8-bromo cAMP stimulates the maturation rather than inducing prespore and prestalk differentiation.  相似文献

Abstract: We conducted a physical simulation experiment to test the efficacy of harmonic direction finding for remotely detecting locomotor activity in animals. The ability to remotely detect movement helps to avoid disturbing natural movement behavior. Remote detection implies that the observer can sense only a change in signal bearing. In our simulated movements, small changes in bearing (<5.7°) were routinely undetectable. Detectability improved progressively with the size of the simulated animal movement. The average (±SD) of reflector tag movements correctly detected for 5 observers was 93.9 ± 12.8% when the tag was moved ≥11.5°; most observers correctly detected tag movements ≥20.1°. Given our data, one can assess whether the technique will be effective for detecting movements at an observation distance appropriate for the study organism. We recommend that both habitat and behavior of the organism be taken into consideration when contemplating use of this technique for detecting locomotion.  相似文献

Twenty novel polymorphic microsatellite loci were isolated and characterized from the Indri, Indri indri, genome. Along with sequence data, this marker suite will be used in future studies to establish population structure throughout its range and to verify the proposed subspecific nomenclature. Gene diversity (0.760 and 0.783) and allelic richness (5.8 and 6.43) were estimated in the Betampona and Andasibe populations, respectively.  相似文献

Normal human epidermal melanocytes became swollen and more dendritic with an increase in the amount of tyrosinase and immunoreactive b-locus protein when they were cultured for 2 days with the following arachidonic acid metabolites: prostaglandin (PG) D2, leukotriene (LT) B4, LTC4, LTD4, LTE4, thromboxane (TX) B2 and 12-hydroxy eicosatetraenoic acid (12-HETE). The effect of LTC4 was particularly strong compared to that of PGE2, about which we have previously reported. On the other hand, PGE1, PGF and 6-ketoPGF did not show any significant stimulatory effect. These data suggest that arachidonate-derived chemical mediators, especially LTC4, may be responsible for the induction of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation of the skin.  相似文献

1. In each of twenty-six week-long experiments, the colonization by macroinvertebrates of boxes of natural sediment in a stony stream was measured. The experiments took place between February and November 1992 and environmental conditions prevailing during the weeks (particularly discharge and temperature) differed widely.
2. Colonization rate also varied widely between the weekly experiments and was sensitive to discharge, temperature and background benthic density, depending on the taxa considered.
3. A 'mobility index' measured colonization rate independently of background benthic density. This index was most strongly and positively correlated with discharge for the abundant stonefly Leuctra nigra, the net-spinning caddis Plectrocnemia conspersa and the Chironomidae, perhaps indicating that their mobility is physically driven by the influence of flow on drift.
4. Mobility in a second stonefly ( Nemurella pictetii ) was greatest in summer, when flows were low but temperature was high. Peak mobility in this species occurred during an ochreous bloom on the stream bed. It is likely the mobility of N. pictetii is more active than the other taxa.
5. There were thus differences among taxa in their mobility at baseflow and in their susceptibility to flow fluctuations. The population consequences of differences in mobility among taxa are discussed.  相似文献

Cell sorting behavior was observed during the development of Dictyostelium discoideum Ax-2, between cells grown with [G(+) cells] and without [G(−) cells] glucose. Development of the G(−) cells was about 2-3 hr faster, as reflected by differences in chemotactic sensitivity of the cells and cell cohesiveness. Among various mixing combinations of G(−) and G(+) cells, the most clear sorting occured when vegetative G(+) cells were mixed with G(−) cells which had been allowed to develop for 3 hr, the G(−) cells being located in the anterior prestalk region of a migrating slug. In contrast, vegetative G(−) cells moved to the posterior prespore region of a slug when mixed with G(+) cells which had developed for 6 hr. These findings indicate a close relationship of the cellular developmental stage to the sorting behavior. Possible implications of the differential chemotactic ability and cohesiveness for the sorting mechanism are disscussed.  相似文献

The general lack of significant changes in mineral soil C stocks during CO2‐enrichment experiments has cast doubt on predictions that increased soil C can partially offset rising atmospheric CO2 concentrations. Here, we show, through meta‐analysis techniques, that these experiments collectively exhibited a 5.6% increase in soil C over 2–9 years, at a median rate of 19 g C m?2 yr?1. We also measured C accrual in deciduous forest and grassland soils, at rates exceeding 40 g C m?2 yr?1 for 5–8 years, because both systems responded to CO2 enrichment with large increases in root production. Even though native C stocks were relatively large, over half of the accrued C at both sites was incorporated into microaggregates, which protect C and increase its longevity. Our data, in combination with the meta‐analysis, demonstrate the potential for mineral soils in diverse temperate ecosystems to store additional C in response to CO2 enrichment.  相似文献
