We adopted an integrated systematic approach to delimit evolutionary species and describe phylogeographic, morphometric and ecological relationships in Otomys denti (from the Albertine Rift, Southern Rift in Malawi and the northern Eastern Arc Mountains) and Otomys lacustris (from the Southern Rift in Tanzania and Zambia, and the southern Eastern Arc Mountains). Molecular [cytochrome (cyt) b sequences, 1143 bp, N  = 18], craniometric (classical, N  = 100 and geometric, N  = 60) and ecological (Partial Least Squares regression of shape and ecogeographic variables) approaches show a profound, parallel disjunction between two groups: (1) Eastern Arc and Southern Rift (including the Malawi Rift) ( O. lacustris and Otomys denti sungae ) and (2) Albertine Rift ( Otomys denti denti and Otomys denti kempi ) taxa. Within both groups, cyt b sequences or craniometric analysis provided evidence for the differentiation of both southern and northern Eastern Arc from Southern Rift lineages (across the so-called Makambako Gap). Within the Albertine Rift ( denti – kempi ) lineage, populations from individual mountain ranges differed significantly in skull shape (but not size), but were similar genetically. Over-reliance in the past on very few morphological characters (e.g. number of molar laminae) and a polytypic species concept has obscured phylogenetic relationships and species discrimination in this group. We recognize at least three species in this group, and distinct lineages within two of these species. Each species or lineage was endemic to one of three regions: the Albertine Rift, the Malawi Rift or the Eastern Arc. The paper by Sand‐Jensen (2003 , Freshwater Biology, 48 , 271), and the subsequent comment and reply ( Sukhodolov, 2005 , Freshwater Biology, 50 , 194; Sand‐Jensen, 2005 , Freshwater Biology, 50 , 196), are discussed. I present partial theory describing how the macrophyte bending angle changes with increased flow velocity, demonstrating a nonlinear relation. 2. While Sand‐Jensen (2005) is correct that plant wetted area is the only characteristic area that can be measured easily, some other measure of the exposure area of the plant stand to the flow may be preferable. The relationship in Sand‐Jensen (2003) between the dimensionless drag coefficient and flow velocity depends on the definition of characteristic area. Hence, the analysis involving the drag parameter in Sand‐Jensen (2003) should be interpreted with care.  相似文献

1. Salmonids, like many other fish species, exhibit morphological plasticity to variations in water current velocity. However, little is known about how this response varies with age and alternative sexual tactics that usually coexist in the same area. We therefore sampled immature 1- and 2-year-old and sexually mature Salmo salar parr to determine how the morphological response to slow and rapid water currents varies across these groups.
2. Both 1- and 2-year-old immature parr in rapid habitats can be distinguished from individuals in slow habitats using a combination of fin measurements. In contrast, body shape measurements were useful only to distinguish 2-year-old individuals in the different habitat types. We also showed that mature parr are notably robust, irrespective of habitat type. For these individuals, only their body length differed between slow and rapid water currents, being bigger in slow water currents.
3. Our results imply that fins are the first structures to respond to water current velocity, followed by changes in body shape as individuals grow bigger. The robust phenotype observed for mature parr is likely to pose extra limitations on movement due to an increase in drag forces, thus contributing to their smaller size in rapid water currents.  相似文献

Abstract The relationship between sclerophyll forest and temperate rainforest in Tasmania is believed to be driven by climate, soils and fire regime; however, this has been tested infrequently on time frames relevant to the longevity of the major forest trees involved. This study uses sediments in four small hollows from within a rainforest stand in the Upper Ringarooma valley in northeastern Tasmania, Australia, to analyse vegetation dynamics and disturbance over the last 1000 years. Pollen-vegetation relationships were investigated by comparing pollen rain and current vegetation, and the chronology was established by radiocarbon and lead-210 dates. The lead-210 data indicate that the two Sphagnum humus profiles were not always closed systems for inorganic inwash; however, the pollen and charcoal records are generally consistent indicating that a mixed Eucalyptus-Nothofagus forest shifted to a Kothofagus dominated rainforest as fire became a less prominent component of the environment. About 400 years ago Leptospermum lanigerum invaded the community as canopy gaps developed, possibly as the older Nothofagus Cunninghamii trees died. There is no strong evidence of invasion by Atherosperma moschatum as suggested by some models of forest dynamics in these forests in Tasmania. In this stand of forest, fire and erosion following flooding have been the major causes of disturbance.  相似文献

Abstract. Accumulation of the lipophilic cation tri-phenylmethylphosphonium (TPMP+) has been used to estimate the plasmalemma potential (Φm) of Porphyra purpurea (Rhodophyta, Bangiales) and Ulva lactuca (Chlorophyta, Ulvales). Values of Φm obtained using the Nernst equation were −61 mV and −54 mV respectively; these values compare well with those obtained using glass microelectrodes. A trend of hyperpolarization of Φm in P. purpurea was observed with decreasing external salinity. This hyperpolarization was shown to be primarily due to changes in external K+ concentration. Varying external Na+ concentration was found to have little effect on Φm. The present data suggest that the membrane potential of P. purpurea is not wholly due to a K+ diffusion potential, but may have an electrogenic component.  相似文献

Abstract Radioisotope equilibration techniques have been used to determine the intracellular concentration of K+, Na+ and Cl?, together with the unidirectional ion fluxes across the plasmalemma of Porphyra purpurea. Influx and efflux of 42K+, 24Na+ and 36C1? are biphasic, the rapid, initial uptake and loss of tracer from individual thalli being attributable to desorption from extracellular regions. Cellular fluxes are slower and monophasic, cells discriminating in favour of K+ and Cl? and against Na+. A comparison between the equilibrium potential of individual ion species and the measured membrane potential demonstrates that there is an active component of K+ and Cl? influx and Na+ efflux. ‘Active’ uptake and ‘passive’ loss of K+ and Cl? are reduced when plants are kept in darkness, suggesting that a fraction of the transport of K+ and Cl? may be due to ‘exchange diffusion’ (K+/K+ and Cl?/Cl?antiport).  相似文献

CAMARA-HERNANDEZ J. & GAMBINO, S., 1991. Early ontogenetic development of the pistillate inflorescence in a diploid perennial teosinte (Zea diploperennis , Poaceae). The early ontogeny of pistillate inflorescences of %ea diploperennis in plants grown at the latitude of Buenos Aires, Argentina, is investigated using the scanning electron microscope. The pattern of development of the inflorescence is similar to that in staminate and mixed inflorescences, starting with the formation of a pair of spikelets from a common branch primordium initiated in the axil of a bract on the ear axis. This bract arrests its development and aborts early. After initiation of an outer glume on both spikelet primordia, the pedicellate spikelet arrests its growth and aborts resulting in the mature inflorescence having two rows of solitary spikelets arranged distichally. This is significantly different from the pattern observed by other authors in plants grown in different environments (such as in natural populations in Mexico).  相似文献
