Abstract.  1. Vegetation structural complexity is an important factor influencing ecological interactions between different trophic levels. In order to investigate relationships between the architecture of trees, the presence of arthropod predators, and survival and parasitism of the autumnal moth Epirrita autumnata Borkhausen, two sets of experiments were conducted.
2. In one experiment, the architectural complexity of mountain birch was manipulated to separate the effects of plant structure and age. In the other experiment the trees were left intact, but chosen to represent varying degrees of natural complexity. Young autumnal moth larvae were placed on the trees and their survival was monitored during the larval period.
3. The larvae survived longer in more complex trees if predation by ants was prevented with a glue ring, whereas in control trees smaller canopy size improved survival times in one experiment. The density of ants observed in the trees was not affected by canopy size but spider density was higher on smaller trees. The effect of canopy structure on larval parasitism was weak; larger canopy size decreased parasitism only in one year. Until the fourth instar the larvae travelled shorter distances in trees with reduced branchiness than in trees with reduced foliage or control treatments. Canopy structure manipulation by pruning did not alter the quality of leaves as food for larvae.
4. The effect of canopy structure on herbivore survival may depend on natural enemy abundance and foraging strategy. In complex canopies herbivores are probably better able to escape predation by ambushing spiders but not by actively searching ants.  相似文献

We report a nearly complete skeleton of a new species of stem roller (Aves, Coracii) from the early Eocene Green River Formation of North America. The new species is most closely related to two species‐depauperate lineages, Coraciidae (rollers) and Brachypteraciidae (ground rollers), that form a monophyletic crown clade (Coracioidea) with an exclusively Old World extant distribution. Phylogenetic analysis utilizing a matrix of 133 morphological characters and sequence data from three genes (RAG‐1, c‐myc, and ND2) identifies the new species as a stem member of the Coracii more closely related to the crown clade than the only previously identified New World taxon, Primobucco mcgrewi. The phylogenetic placement of the new species and Primobucco mcgrewiindicates a widespread northern hemisphere distribution in the Eocene with subsequent restriction to Africa, Madagascar, Australia, and temperate to tropical parts of Europe and Asia. It provides evidence of further ecological diversity in early stem Coracii and convergence on crown morphologies. The new species contributes to mounting evidence that extant distributions for major avian subclades may be of comparatively recent origin. Coliiformes (mousebirds) are represented by just six extant species. These species, restricted to sub‐Saharan Africa, are all primarily frugivorous and are among the most sedentary of living birds. Previously described fossil Coliiformes preserving feather traces share the short, rounded wing shape of extant mousebirds. Along with osteological evidence, these observations have been proposed to support poor sustained flight capabilities across the stem mousebird lineage. We report a new species of Coliiformes from the early Eocene (51.66 ± 0.09 Ma) Fossil Butte Member of the Green River Formation, represented by one of the comparatively few fossils from these deposits preserving carbonized traces of the wing and tail feathering. Feather traces indicate an elongate, tapering wing shape similar to that of some extant aerial insectivores, and suggestive of a capacity for sustained and agile open‐air flight. Traces of the rectrices reveal the tail accounted for approximately two‐thirds of the total length of the bird, a proportion similar to that in living mousebirds. Phylogenetic analysis places the new species as a stem representative of Coliiformes, demonstrating for the first time that the two major clades of Coliiformes – Sandcoleidae and Colii – co‐occurred at Fossil Lake. Based on the recovered phylogeny, as well as the osteology and feathering of extant and fossil Coliiformes, the wing shape of the new species is interpreted as apomorphic. In addition to documenting unexpected morphological specialization within stem‐lineage Coliiformes, the new species adds yet another taxon to the emerging reconstruction of the diverse Paleogene avifauna from the tightly dated and nearly synchronous fossiliferous deposits of the Fossil Butte Member. © 2010 The Linnean Society of London, Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2010, 160 , 685–706.  相似文献

Encysted embryos of the primitive crustacean, Artemia franciscana,are among the most resistant of all animal life history stagesto extremes of environmental stress. This resistance has likelybeen acquired during evolutionary adaptation to their harshecological setting. In the laboratory, for example, some ofthese embryos survive more than 6 years of continuous anoxiawhile fully hydrated and at room temperature, a phenomenal capabilitythat can easily be related to their frequent encounters withanoxic conditions in nature. A small heat shock protein belongingto the -crystallin family of proteins, referred to as p26, appearsto play a central role in the stress resistance of these embryos.Our evidence shows that this protein is an important componentin their adaptive repertoire, and vital for the survival ofArtemia in nature.  相似文献

We investigated electron transfer processes of dissolved organic matter (DOM) and their potential importance for anaerobic heterotrophic respiration in a northern peatland. Electron accepting and donating capacities (EAC, EDC) of DOM were quantified using dissolved H2S and ferric iron as reactants. Carbon turnover rates were obtained from porewater profiles (CO2, CH4) and inverse modeling. Carbon dioxide was released at rates of 0.2–5.9 mmol m−2 day−1 below the water table. Methane (CH4) formation contributed <10%, and oxygen consumption 2% to 40%, leaving a major fraction of CO2 production unexplained. DOM oxidized H2S to thiosulfate and was reduced by dissolved ferric iron. Reduction with H2S increased the subsequently determined EDC compared to untreated controls, indicating a reversibility of the electron transfer. In situ redox capacities of DOM ranged from 0.2 to 6.1 mEq g−1 C (EAC) and from 0.0 to 1.4 mEq g−1 C (EDC), respectively. EAC generally decreased with depth and changed after a water table drawdown and rebound by 20 and −45 mEq m−2, respectively. The change in EAC during the water table fluctuation was similar to CH4 formation rates. In peatlands, electron transfer of DOM may thus significantly contribute to the oxidation of reduced organic substrates by anaerobic heterotrophic respiration, or by maintaining the respiratory activity of sulfate reducers via provision of thiosulfate. Part of the anaerobic electron flow in peat soils is thus potentially diverted from methanogenesis, decreasing its contribution to the total carbon emitted to the atmosphere.  相似文献

  • 1 Hickling Broad underwent major changes from a clear water, charophyte-dominated state in the decades previous to 1970 to a turbid, phytoplankton-dominated state by the mid 1970s. These changes were complexly linked with increasing eutrophication by black-headed gulls and increased salinity due to agricultural changes in the catchment.
  • 2 At the turn of the 1970s, the lake began to change again and during the 1980s a submerged plant community, of tall, vigorously growing species (e.g. Myriophyllum spicatum, Patamogeton pectinatus) had recovered, despite a major reduction in the roosting gull population, no change in salinity, and only small reductions in phytoplankton biomass and total phosphorus concentration.
  • 3 Recovery of the plants may be linked to grazing of periphyton on them by an increased population of a mysid Neomysis integer which had been suppressed by toxicity from an alga, Prymnesium parvum formerly stimulated by the ingress of gull guano.
  • 4 A cladoceran community present in the clear-water phase has not recovered and may be suppressed by continued high salinities. Further restoration of the lake requires displacement of the large phytoplankton biomass and this might best be contemplated by land use changes leading to lowered salinity and predicted recovery of grazing Cladocera.
  • 5 Models are given which summarize the likely workings of the system in the early twentieth century, the mid-twentieth century, the 1970s and the late 1980s.

In the spikelet axis of Proctor spring barley there was a coreof vascular tissue in which the normal collateral bundle structurewas not distinguishable. From this tissue the vascular strandsbranched out, in sequence, to the sterile lateral spikelets,the glumes, the lemma, the palea, the lodicules and the stamens.The vascular tissue of the spikelet axis terminated in the ovaryin four bundles of which the adaxial bundle passing close tothe ovule was the biggest. The arrangement of the vascular strandsand the presence of transfer cells indicated that assimilate,particularly from the lemma, can be easily translocated to thegrowing grain. In the collar region the spikelets, which inthe mature ear bear small grains, were less well vas-cularized. In the vascular tissue beneath the ovary were thick-walled cells.These cells and the cells of the funiculus-chalaza region maybe important in the process of translocation and grain growth.  相似文献
