To penetrate soil, a root requires pressure both to expand the cavity it is to occupy, σn, and to overcome root–soil friction, σf. Difficulties in estimating these two pressures independently have limited our ability to estimate the coefficient of soil–root friction, μsr. We used a rotated penetrometer probe, of similar dimensions to a root, and for the first time entering the soil at a similar rate to a root tip, to estimate σn. Separately we measured root penetration resistance (PR) Qr. Root PR was between two to four times σn. We estimated that the coefficient of root–soil friction (μsr) was 0.21–0.26, based on the geometry of the root tip. This is slightly larger than the 0.05–0.15 characteristic of boundary lubricants. Scanning electron microscopy showed that turgid border cells lined the root channel, supporting our hypothesis that the lubricant consisted of mucilage sandwiched between border cells and the surface of the root cap and epidermis. This cell–cell lubrication greatly decreased the friction that would otherwise be experienced had the surface of the root proper slid directly past unlubricated soil particles. Because root–soil friction can be a substantial component of root PR, successful manipulation of friction represents a promising opportunity for improving plant performance.  相似文献

Neotropical monkeys of the genera Cacajao, Chiropotes, and Pithecia (Pitheciidae) are considered to be highly arboreal, spending most of their time feeding and traveling in the upper canopy. Until now, the use of terrestrial substrates has not been analyzed in detail in this group. Here, we review the frequency of terrestrial use among pitheciin taxa to determine the ecological and social conditions that might lead to such behavior. We collated published and unpublished data from 14 taxa in the three genera. Data were gleaned from 53 published studies (including five on multiple pitheciin genera) and personal communications of unpublished data distributed across 31 localities. Terrestrial activity was reported in 61% of Pithecia field studies (11 of 18), in 34% of Chiropotes studies (10 of 29), and 36% of Cacajao studies (4 of 11). Within Pithecia, terrestrial behavior was more frequently reported in smaller species (e.g. P. pithecia) that are vertical clingers and leapers and make extensive use of the understory than in in the larger bodied canopy dwellers of the western Amazon (e.g. P. irrorata). Terrestrial behavior in Pithecia also occurred more frequently and lasted longer than in Cacajao or Chiropotes. An apparent association was found between flooded habitats and terrestrial activity and there is evidence of the development of a “local pattern” of terrestrial use in some populations. Seasonal fruit availability also may stimulate terrestrial behavior. Individuals also descended to the ground when visiting mineral licks, escaping predators, and responding to accidents such as a dropped infant. Overall, the results of this review emphasize that terrestrial use is rare among the pitheciins in general and is usually associated with the exploitation of specific resources or habitat types. Am. SYNOPSIS. In cultures of the Y strain of Trypanosoma cruzi treated with acriflavine, a very high proportion of the crithidiae may be dyskinetoplastic. These crithidiae cannot be maintained in subcultures but are able to differentiate into (dyskinetoplastic) metatrypanosomes. In tissue cultures infected with these metatrypanosomes, or with blood trypanosomes and treated with acriflavine, dyskinetoplastic T. cruzi is able to go thru the whole sequence of stages that characterizes its cycle in the vertebrate host: penetration by trypanosomes into cells, differentiation into leishmaniae, multiplication in this phase and differentiation again into trypanosomes. The same may occur in the mammalian host itself. The physiological implications of these findings are discussed and special attention is called to polymorphism of blood forms of T. cruzi, which probably has the same significance it has in the brucei-evansi group of trypanosomes.  相似文献

The feeding habits of lions in Nairobi National Park have been observed between 1968 and 1972. Nairobi Park is briefly described and the herbivore and predator populations are discussed. The relationship between the changing status of the prey population for the period 1968-72 and the feeding habits of the lions is examined and compared with data from earlier years. Selection ratio (preference ratio) for three of the most important prey species is more closely adjusted to the abundance of these species in the total ungulate population than was the case prior to 1968. Only warthog and eland form an exception. Predation on wildebeest shows the most marked decrease although this species has been increasing during the last 5 years. Wildebeest, kongoni, zebra and warthog have provided 80% of total kills throughout the study on the basis of numbers killed. On this basis, warthog has the highest preference rating. However, the largest contribution to the lions' diet expressed in kg is by kongoni, followed by zebra, wildebeest, eland and warthog, in that order. Kongoni and wildebeest contribute most during the first half of the year and zebra and eland during the last 6 months. Selection for males is significant in zebra and eland and highly significant in kongoni, whilst only in zebra is selection for juveniles evident.  相似文献

Studies of 16 polymorphic loci in the fish Fundulus heteroclitushave uncovered significant directional changes in gene frequencieswith latitude (i.e., clines). These spatial patterns could havearisen by primary and/or secondary intergradation. While wecannot presently distinguish between these two models, mitochondrialDNA analyses indicate that if previous isolation occurred asrequired for secondary intergradation, it must have been relativelyrecent and of short duration. Herein we discuss the roles ofgenetic drift, random migration, nonrandom migration, selectionand others as potential driving forces for both modes of clineformation. In addition, we address the potential role of thelast glacial period in (1) creating isolating barriers, (2)the opening of unoccupied habitats for range extension, and(3) as a mechanism for thermal selection. SUMMARY. Growth of Lemna minor fronds in the River Frome during summer was found to be logarithmic with time and the growth rate (log10) was 0.066 day−1. This is equivalent to a doubling time of 4.5 days. The life expectancy of the fronds was 34 days.
The net change in the density of bacteria epiphytic on the lower surface of Lemna fronds in the R. Frome was monitored using a direct microscopic technique. The observed increase in bacterial numbers has been partitioned into the components of attachment and growth, assuming that attachment occurred at a constant rate and that the bacterial population grew logarithmically. The line which fitted the data best gave an attachment rate of 5.7 × 105 bacteria cm−2 day−1 and a growth rate (log10) for the bacteria of 0.044 day−1 which is equivalent to a doubling time of 164 h.
Estimates of the rate of detachment of bacteria from Lemna plants were obtained from a laboratory experiment which assumed negligible growth of bacteria in 1 h. The number of bacteria which detached per hour and the sizes of the bacterial populations on the plants before and after detachment were estimated using a plating technique. Different detachment rates were monitored. The detachment rate (analogous to growth rate) which is judged to be most similar to an in situ value was 0.0031 h−1 (0.074 day−1). This rate added to the specific growth rate given above resulted in a corrected growth rate of 0.118 day−1 equivalent to a doubling time of 61 h.  相似文献

Soybeans [Glycine max (L.) Merr. cv. Ransom] grown at a constant25 °C were placed in a 12-h inductive photoperiod at twoweeks of age. Subgroups were shoot-chilled for one week at aconstant 10 °C during each of the first four weeks of floralinduction. Controls were photoinduced but not chilled. Chillingduring the first week of photoinduction inhibited productionof floral primordia, but did not increase the abscission rateof flowers and pods. Chilling during the second week did notaffect primordium production or abscission rate, but did causea significant increase in numbers of fused and malformed pods.Chilling during the third week caused loss of 77 per cent ofearly flowers and pods by abscission, while fourth week chillingcaused less severe losses by abscission. Inhibition of vegetativegrowth may have been responsible for primordium loss in first-weekplants, while disturbances in the development of flowers wereresponsible for the losses in the other chilling weeks. Althoughchilling during the first and third photoinduction weeks causeda significant reduction in early pod numbers, plants harvestedat 16 weeks of age showed no significant loss in seed yield.Low abscission rates late in pod filling and increased weightof individual seeds compensated for early losses of pods. Thesecompensatory responses to a chilling-induced loss of pods aresimilar to those reported for mechanically depodded soybeans. Glycine max (L.)
