A number of remote sensing studies have evaluated the temporal trends of the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI or vegetation greenness) in the North American boreal forest during the last two decades, often getting quite different results. To examine the effect that the use of different datasets might be having on the estimated trends, we compared the temporal trends of recently burned and unburned sites of boreal forest in central Canada calculated from two datasets: the Global Inventory, Monitoring, and Modeling Studies (GIMMS), which is the most commonly used 8 km dataset, and a new 1 km dataset developed by the Canadian Centre for Remote Sensing (CCRS). We compared the NDVI trends of both datasets along a fire severity gradient in order to evaluate the variance in regeneration rates. Temporal trends were calculated using the seasonal Mann–Kendall trend test, a rank‐based, nonparametric test, which is robust against seasonality, nonnormality, heteroscedasticity, missing values, and serial dependence. The results showed contrasting NDVI trends between the CCRS and the GIMMS datasets. The CCRS dataset showed NDVI increases in all recently burned sites and in 50% of the unburned sites. Surprisingly, the GIMMS dataset did not capture the NDVI recovery in most burned sites and even showed NDVI declines in some burned sites one decade after fire. Between 50% and 75% of GIMMS pixels showed NDVI decreases in the unburned forest compared with <1% of CCRS pixels. Being the most broadly used dataset for monitoring ecosystem and carbon balance changes, the bias towards negative trends in the GIMMS dataset in the North American boreal forest has broad implications for the evaluation of vegetation and carbon dynamics in this region and globally.  相似文献

The population size of the Socorro Mockingbird Mimodes graysoni, which represents a monotypic genus endemic to Socorro Island, México, has declined dramatically within the last 40 years. Postulated causal factors include competitive exclusion by Northern Mockingbirds Mimus polyglottos, predation by feral cats and overgrazing by feral sheep. Habitat degradation looms as the primary candidate because surviving Socorro Mockingbirds live mainly in areas of the island with little apparent habitat damage, and because Northern Mockingbirds and cats both arrived on Socorro after much of the decline had occurred. Isolating key factors is difficult, however, because the present distributions of cats and Northern Mockingbirds coincide broadly with patterns of habitat degradation. To investigate habitat requirements of the endemic mockingbird in detail, we measured vegetation characteristics at localities with and without Socorro Mockingbirds, and observed their foraging behaviour. Socorro Mockingbirds occupied sites in montane regions covered with Ilex socorroensis, Guettarda insularis, Triumfetta socorrensis and Eupatorium pacificum; they were also abundant in pristine lowland forests. Socorro Mockingbirds were scarce in disturbed forests where Dodonaea viscosa has replaced the original understorey, and they were absent from low-elevation Croton masonii scrub, even in areas with no signs of degradation. Restoration of degraded habitat could help the population of Socorro Mockingbirds grow and reoccupy more of its former range.  相似文献

The body size of animals is affected by several factors, including ambient temperature and food availability. Ambient temperature is often negatively related to body size (Bergmann's rule) whereas an improved diet, especially during growth, has a positive effect. Animals commensal with man commonly exploit additional food sources (e.g. garbage dumps), thereby increasing their food supply. Using museum material, we studied morphological variation in skull size (and thus body size) among Spanish red foxes. Four measurements were taken of each skull and were related to the habitat from which the foxes were collected (agricultural and non-agricultural), and to latitude as a proxy for ambient temperature. The skull size of foxes collected in agricultural areas during the late 20th Century was significantly larger than that of those from non-agricultural areas, and was negatively related to latitude, thus contradicting Bergmann's rule. We suggest that increased food availability from animal husbandry is the cause for the observed increase in skull size (and thus body size).  © 2007 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2007, 90 , 729–734.  相似文献

We tested whether belly-soaking (i.e. wetting of ventral plumage) in incubating Kentish Plovers Charadrius alexandrinus in a hot environment serves to cool overheated eggs, or whether belly-soaking would mainly serve for adult thermoregulation, and egg wetting would be a mere consequence of the ventral feathers of incubating adults being wet. When ambient temperature was high (> 30 °C), body temperature of incubating Kentish Plovers increased with ambient temperatures. When adults departed from nests to belly-soak, egg temperatures were not critical for embryos. However, eggs in exposed nests overheated to levels that may be lethal for embryos when adults left the nests to belly-soak, and adults also employed belly-soaking to cool down overheated eggs when they returned to their nests. Indeed, the cooling rate of eggs was much faster when they were wetted. We conclude that the primary function of belly-soaking in the Kentish Plover is to dissipate body heat in heat-stressed incubating adults, rather than to cool overheated eggs. Eggs overheated as a consequence of short-term interruptions in nest attendance by heat-stressed adults to belly-soak, and Plovers employed secondarily belly-soaking to cool down overheated eggs. These results indicate that adult thermoregulation and egg cooling are not mutually exclusive functions of belly-soaking.  相似文献

Based on analyses of variation in plumage, morphometrics, vocalizations, and mitochondrial and nuclear DNA sequences, we document the occurrence of interspecific hybridization between a Chestnut-naped Antpitta Grallaria nuchalis and a Chestnut-crowned Antpitta G. ruficapilla in a high-elevation forest fragment in the Cordillera Central of the Andes of Colombia. One hybrid individual was collected and at least two were recorded singing. The hybrid specimen exhibits a combination of phenotypic traits that exclude other species of antpittas as potential parents, and its vocalizations combine elements of songs of both of its parental species. Genetic analyses demonstrate that the hybrid has G. nuchalis mitochondrial DNA and mixed nuclear DNA with copies corresponding to G. nuchalis and G. ruficapilla alleles, demonstrating that the female parent was G. nuchalis. Hybridization is considered extremely rare in most groups of suboscine passerines, but it may be facilitated when populations are decimated as a consequence of deforestation and habitat fragmentation.  相似文献

Four different mycotoxins (patulin, T-2 toxin, diacetoxyscirpenol and roquefortine) were used to study growth inhibitory effects on a melanin precursor overproducer mutant of the ciliateTetrahymena thermophilaThis strain is especially sensitive to diacetoxyscirpenol and T-2 toxin. The secretion capacity of melanin precursors into the culture medium by this mutant and its biosensor capacity are very useful characteristics to elaborate a rapid bioassay to detect some specific mycotoxins.  相似文献

Specimens belonging to Tortula subulata complex ( T. inermis , T. mucronifolia and T. subulata ) were analysed using a combination of morphometric methods based on quantitative characters [principal component analysis (PCA), discriminant analysis (DA); 76 samples)] and molecular methods (ITS1 – 5.8S rRNA gene and ITS2; 47 samples) to assess patterns of morphological and molecular differentiation within this complex of taxa. The study shows that four species can be recognized: T. mucronifolia , T. subulata , T. inermis and T. subulata var. angustata with bistratose border, which is elevated to the species rank as T. schimperi nom. nov. The most valuable quantitative characters for identification of these species are the strata number of the marginal laminal cells, the ratio of middle marginal laminal cell width/middle marginal laminal cell length, basal membrane of peristome length, middle laminal cell width and papillae number on the middle laminal cells. The internal transcribed spacer (ITS) data suggest that this group of taxa is not monophyletic, T. mucronifolia being close to Protobryum bryoides (= Tortula protobryoides ). The remaining species seem to be a monophyletic group, T. schimperi being the sister group of the clade composed by T. inermis and T. subulata . T. subulata is considered to be of high morphological variability, for which ITS sequences did not resolve the internal relationships.  © 2005 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society , 2005, 149 , 333–350.  相似文献

Two independent cases of visual mimicry involving snake-eating eagles as mimics and more powerful bird-eating hawks as models are proposed. One pair of species is formed by the sympatric West African Serpent-eagle Dryotriorchis spectabilis and Cassin's Hawk Eagle Spizaetus africanus (= Aquila africana ), inhabiting the tropical forests of the African Gulf of Guinea. The second case involves the Madagascar Serpent-eagle Eutriorchis astur and the Madagascar Goshawk Accipiter henstii , both sympatric and endemics of forests in Madagascar. Similarity in plumage colour and pattern as well as in body size and proportions are remarkable in both cases. The species mimicry pairs are in both cases not closely related phylogenetically and greatly differ in diet, making it unlikely that common ancestry or shared foraging strategies explain the resemblance in plumage coloration and pattern. Mimicry may have evolved because the mimic serpent-eagles obtain (the following hypotheses are not mutually exclusive): (1) a foraging advantage by deceiving their snake prey as they may not flee from bird-eating raptors such as the models, (2) a lowered predation or harassment by the models or other predators, and/or (3) reduced mobbing by small birds, which tend to avoid bird-eating raptors. Alternatively, the similarities in plumage described here may be the result of random convergence due to constraints in the evolution of plumage colours and patterns in diurnal raptors.  相似文献
