Mexican Rana pipiens now commonly sold in the United Statesdiffer morphologically and physiologically from their northerncounterparts. They resemble Arizona pipiens in appearance andbehavior, but their breeding cycle is distinctive. They aremost reproductively active in July and August. During late springand summer they can be ovulated readily and their pituitarygonadotropin levels are apparently high. Such is not the caseduring other times of the year. SYNOPSIS. Protostelium mycophaga Olive and Stoianovitch was isolated from 7 of 19 plant sources collected in a 15-mile radius of Syracuse, New York. Two of these isolations were made from up-right, nondecomposed plants. Spore diameter measurements of 4 of the isolates gave values that agree with those published for this species. The optimum temperature for the growth of P. mycophaga on enriched corn meal agar and Rhodotorula mucilaginosa was 20 C. Limited growth occurred at 10 C and no growth was observed above 30 C.

ABSTRACT Earlier studies showed that Leishmania major promastigotes are sensitive to osmotic conditions. A reduction in osmolality caused the cells to shorten and to rapidly release most of their large internal pool of alanine. In this study some effects of hyper-osmotic stress were examined. an increase in osmolality of the culture medium from 308 to 625 mOsm/kg caused only a small decrease in growth rate. When cells grown in the usual culture medium (308 mOsm/kg) were washed, resuspended in iso-osmotic buffer, and subjected to acute hyper-osmotic stress by addition of mannitol, the alanine content increased even in the absence of exogenous substrate. Promastigotes, depleted of alanine by a 5-min exposure to hypo-osmotic conditions, also synthesized alanine when resuspended in iso-osmotic buffer. Washed cells resuspended in iso-osmotic buffer consume their internal pool of alanine under aerobic conditions, Rates of consumption decreased on addition of mannitol, becoming zero at about 440 mOsm/kg. At higher osmolalities, alanine synthesis occurred. to estimate whether proteolysis could account for alanine synthesis in the absence of exogenous substrate, cells that had been grown with [1-14C]leucine were washed and resuspended under hypo-, iso-, and hyper-osmotic conditions and the amounts of 14CO2 and 14C-labelled peptides released in 1 h were measured. Little proteolysis occurred under these conditions, but the possibility that proteolysis was the source of the alanine increase, observed in response to hyper-osmotic stress, cannot be ruled out.  相似文献

Owing to the complex interactions among climate, plants, cattle grazing, and land management practices, the impacts of climate change on cattle have been hard to predict. Predicting future grassland ecosystem functioning relies on understanding how changes in climate alter the quantity of forage produced, but also forage quality. Plant protein, which is a function of plant nitrogen concentrations, and digestible energy limit the performance of herbivores when in short supply; moreover, deficiencies can be expensive to mitigate. To better understand how changes in temperature and precipitation would affect forage protein and energy availability, we analyzed over 21 000 measurements of cattle fecal chemistry acquired over 14 years in the continental US. Our analysis of patterns in forage quality among ecologically defined regions revealed that increasing temperature and declining precipitation decreased dietary crude protein and digestible organic matter for regions with continental climates. Within regions, quality also declined with increased temperature; however, the effects of precipitation were mixed. Any future increases in precipitation would be unlikely to compensate for the declines in forage quality that accompany projected temperature increases. As a result, cattle are likely to experience greater nutritional stress in the future. If these geographic patterns hold as a proxy for future climates, agriculture will require increased supplemental feeds or the consequence will be a decrease in livestock growth.  相似文献

1. Laboratory experiments were completed to identify the mechanisms by which the predatory flatworm, Dugesia tigrina , imposes mortality on its Aedes aegypti and Daphnia magna prey. Feeding trials were completed in glass microcosms which contained one of three – nine densities of small or large individuals of each prey species.
2. Mortality by Dugesia on small and large Aedes followed a type II functional response, whereas the mortality of Daphnia resembled a type III functional response. Prey mortality imposed by Dugesia consisted of consumptive and non-consumptive elements. Non-consumptive mortality occurred when prey individuals trapped in mucus trails subsequently died but were not ingested.
3. Additional experiments were conducted to quantify consumptive (capture followed by ingestion) and non-consumptive mortality (death not followed by ingestion).
4. Consumptive mortality followed a type II functional response for small and large individuals of both prey species, whereas non-consumptive mortality increased with prey density, although the relationships differed with prey species and size. The non-consumptive mortality of large Daphnia increased at an accelerating rate with prey density and exceeded consumptive mortality at intermediate prey abundances. In contrast, non-consumptive mortality of small Aedes and small Daphnia was lower than consumptive mortality and either increased with prey density at a decelerating (small Aedes ) or accelerating (small Daphnia ) rate.
5. These results suggest that the importance of consumptive and non-consumptive mortality to total prey mortality needs to be considered when modelling predator–prey dynamics.  相似文献
