Invertebrate communities in volcanic habitats of different ages on the islands of La Palma and El Hierro were studied using standardized trapping and searching techniques. A variety of graphical and numerical approaches were used to analyse relationships among the sites. Young, barren lava flows constitute aeolian ecosystems with a fauna of generalized detritivores and predators, especially collembolans, earwigs, thysamirans and crickets. Surface samples have many individuals and low diversity; those from caves have smaller numbers but similar taxonomic composition.
Vegetated surface habitats have richer communities, with diverse herbivores and predators but largely without the pioneer 'lavicolous' species. Caves with high humidity and stable temperature contain mainly specialized troglobitic species, but if there are both dry and humid sections lavicoles may also be present. Divergence into distinct epigean and hypogean communities results from both abiotic and biotic processes, including erosion and plant succession. While these occur mainly on the surface they also affect caves, increasing humidity and providing insulation from variations in external environmental conditions; the process is considered as a form of 'maturation' of the caves. Various models of succession are considered, which might help to account for the disappearance of lavicoles from mature epigean and hypogean communities.  相似文献

A detailed account of the changes in visitor numbers and behaviour, inflorescence phenology, and breeding systems is presented. Inflorescences open early in the morning (05.00 hours). Stigmas remain receptive for 15 h, while anther dehiscence occurs 20 h after inflorescence opening. Maximum pollen viability occurs the next day at 05.00 hours. This combination of features largely precludes self-pollination. Controlled pollinations show that apomixis and auto-pollination are absent, and indicate strong incompatibility. In contrast, cross-pollinations do not differ in fruit set from open-pollinated controls. The fruit set in inflorescences exposed to pollinators for different periods after opening (and later stopping pollinator activity by fumigation), indicates that pollination occurs soon after inflorescence opening.
The visitors comprise a numerous and diverse fauna (15 families; 34 species). Features such as pollen loads, abundance, behaviour, and diet patterns, segregate them into: herbivores and predators (Aves, Orthoplera), pollen thieves (Apidae), and true pollinators (most Coleoptera and Diptera). The elevation in inflorescence temperature during opening, and 24 h later, is discussed in relation to cantharophily.
Astrocaryum mexicanum is an example of a highly diverse pollination system in which many animals can coexist. It represents an important resource during the dry season, and provides food and space for refuge and mating. The genetic consequences of having a host of pollinators with different dispersal capabilities are explored.  相似文献

Nitrate and water stress were used to induce senescence in rootnodules of alfalfa (Medicago sativa L. cv. Aragon). Nodule senescencewas assessed by determinations of the nitrogenase (C2H2-reducing)activity, and the leghaemoglobin (LHb) and total soluble proteincontents of the nodules. Nodules responded similarly to and water stress in many respects, but there was a significant difference.All parameters of nodule activity, expressed on the basis ofnodule dry weight (DW), consistently decreased following treatmentwith or during drought; there was a significant interaction (synergism) between the inhibitory effects of and water stress on nitrogenase activity, but sucheffects were merely additive in the case of LHb content or LHb/solubleprotein ratio. However, caused the selective decay of LHb with respect to other nodular soluble proteins,whereas the decrease of LHb during water stress was due to ageneral inhibition of protein synthesis and to an increasedproteolytic activity in the nodule cytosol rather than to aspecific proteolysis of LHb. Seeds of four halophytes from southeastern Spain (the perennialsHalocnemum strobilaceum,Arthrocnemum macrostachyum and Sarcocorniafruticosa, and the annual Salicornia ramosissima) were exposedto iso-osmotic stress with NaCl, MgCl2, MgSO4and Na2SO4. Theosmotic potential that enforced dormancy in the majority ofseeds was determined. The percentage of ungerminated seeds thatrecovered when they were transferred to distilled water didnot differ significantly from the percentage germination ofseeds in distilled water controls, irrespective of the saltused to impose the stress. Therefore, the factor responsiblefor the dormancy of seeds seems to be the decrease in osmoticpotential. Such osmotic pretreatments promoted an increase inthe rate of recovery germination which, inArthrocnemum macrostachyumand Sarcocornia fruticosa, doubled their rates of germinationcompared to distilled water controls. The osmotic potentialsof the soils where the four species occur naturally were morenegative than those allowing seeds to germinate after osmoticstress. Radiolitids (Bivalvia, Radiolitidae) built the calcite outer layer of their shell with compact structure as many other bivalves, or with repetitively layered non-compact structure following different patterns: continuous radial ridges, discontinuous radial ridges, normal cellular, cellular with radially elongate cells, discontinuous cellular, and discontinuous cellular with elongate cells. Some special structures may develop in localized parts: radial structures and inner-marginal or radial grooves. All these structures are currently used in the diagnosis of the family and for the characterization of subfamilies. Constructional morphology analyses and re-evaluation of all these structures reveal that they were misunderstood in some important aspects in the bivalve Treatise and that, consequently, the diagnosis of the family has to be emended and their subfamilies reconsidered. All outer shell layer structure related characters are described, illustrated, and interpreted under a constructional approach, some characters are proposed to emend the diagnosis of the family, and two possible clades are preliminarily distinguished.  相似文献

Nuclear and cortical phenomena during dividing and resting cyst formation of Colpoda inflata are described. Cell division forms a cyst and produces two or four tomites. In each tomite, the right oral field results from the proliferation of the anterior extreme of a single kinety, and the left oral field results from the proliferation of four, five, or six somatic kineties. After macronuclear division, each macronuclear mass undergoes a chromatinic extrusion process. During resting cyst formation, the oral infraciliature of the vegetative cell is resorbed. The somatic kineties dispose in a radial way and some pairs of kinetosomes disappear. As in cell division, there is an extrusion process. From these results we conclude that the resting cysts of Colpoda inflata cannot be included in any group of the previous classifications for hypotrich resting cysts. Thus, we propose a new additional group to Walker and Maugel's classification called PKR (partial-kinetosome-resorbing) cysts.  相似文献

The role of jasmonic acid in the induction of stomatal closure is well known. However, its role in regulating root hydraulic conductivity (L) has not yet been explored. The objectives of the present research were to evaluate how JA regulates L and how calcium and abscisic acid (ABA) could be involved in such regulation. We found that exogenous methyl jasmonate (MeJA) increased L of Phaseolus vulgaris, Solanum lycopersicum and Arabidopsis thaliana roots. Tomato plants defective in JA biosynthesis had lower values of L than wild‐type plants, and that L was restored by addition of MeJA. The increase of L by MeJA was accompanied by an increase of the phosphorylation state of the aquaporin PIP2. We observed that MeJA addition increased the concentration of cytosolic calcium and that calcium channel blockers inhibited the rise of L caused by MeJA. Treatment with fluoridone, an inhibitor of ABA biosynthesis, partially inhibited the increase of L caused by MeJA, and tomato plants defective in ABA biosynthesis increased their L after application of MeJA. It is concluded that JA enhances L and that this enhancement is linked to calcium and ABA dependent and independent signalling pathways.  相似文献

The lack of dependable morphological indicators for the onset and end of seed growth has hindered modeling work in the common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.). We have addressed this problem through the use of mathematical growth functions to analyse and identify critical developmental stages, which can be linked to existing developmental indices. We performed this study under greenhouse conditions with an Andean and a Mesoamerican genotype of contrasting pod and seed phenotypes, and three selected recombinant inbred lines. Pods from tagged flowers were harvested at regular time intervals for various measurements. Differences in flower production and seed and pod growth trajectories among genotypes were detected via comparisons of parameters of fitted growth functions. Regardless of the genotype, the end of pod elongation marked the beginning of seed growth, which lasted until pods displayed a sharp decline in color, or pod hue angle. These results suggest that the end of pod elongation and the onset of color change are reliable indicators of important developmental transitions in the seed, even for widely differing pod phenotypes. We also provide a set of equations that can be used to model different aspects of reproductive growth and development in the common bean.  相似文献

Abstract 1. Many Salicaceae species naturally form hybrid swarms with parental and hybrid taxa that differ in secondary chemical profile and in resistance to herbivores. Theoretically, the differential mortality in the seedling stage can lead to changes in trait expression and alter subsequent interactions between plants and herbivores. This study examines whether herbivory by the generalist slug Arion subfuscus, which causes extensive mortality in young willow seedlings, causes shifts in (a) the foliar chemistry of F2 willow hybrids (Salix sericea and Salix eriocephala), and (b) the subsequent susceptibility to Japanese Beetles, Popillia japonica. 2. In 2001, two populations of F2 seedlings were generated: those that survived slug herbivory (80–90% of seedlings placed in the field were killed by the slugs) were designated as S-plants, whereas C-plants (controls) experienced no mortality. 3. Common garden experiments with cuttings from these populations, in 2001 and 2002, revealed extensive variation in the phenolic chemistry of F2 hybrids, but revealed no significant difference between S- and C-plants, although the levels of foliar nutrients, proteins and nitrogen tended to be higher in S-plants. 4. Concentrations of salicortin and 2′-cinnamoylsalicortin explained 55 and 38% of the the variation in leaf damage caused by Japanese beetles, and secondary chemistry was highly correlated within replicate clones (salicortin R2= 0.85, 2-cinnamoylsalicortin R2= 0.77, condensed tannins R2= 0.68). 5. Interestingly, Japanese beetle damage and condensed tannins were positively correlated within the S-plants, but not in the C-plants, suggesting that slugs had selected for plants with a positive relationship between tannins and P. japonica damage. This is unlikely to be a consequence of a preference for tannins, but is suggested to be related to the elevated nutrient levels in the S-plants, perhaps in combination with the complex-binding properties of tannins. 6. The damage was highly correlated within replicate clones and a model choice analysis suggested that Japanese beetle damage may be explained by four factors: concentrations of salicortin, condensed tannins, and nitrogen, as well as the specific leaf area (thick leaves were damaged less).  相似文献
