A captive colony of green sea turtles, Chelonia mydas, has beenmaintained and observed at a commercial sea turtle farm on GrandCayman Island, B.W.I., since 1973. Observations of this breedingcolony show that the mating and nesting behaviour of the captivegreen sea turtle is similar to that observed in wild populations.Evidence indicates that mating observed prior to a female'snesting in a given season determines the hatchabilityof thatseason's egg production. Annual per female egg production ofthe captive colony appears to be two to five times greater thanthat reported for wild colonies. Observations on the reproductivebiology of green sea turtles hatched and raised under farm conditionssuggests that the minimum age of sexual maturity is eight tonine years of age. The number of eggs per nest, the number ofnests per season per female and hatch rate tend to increasewith successive seasons nesting for these turtles reaching sexualmaturity.  相似文献

Organic matter and nitrogen cycles in two mediterranean woodyshrubs (Adenocarpus decorticans Boiss. andCistus laurifoliusL.) and two pine species were investigated during 1987–1989in a small, recently pine-afforested catchment in Sierra delos Filabres (Almería Province, south-eastern Spain).Pine cover was sparse because canopy closure was not yet completed,allowing strong shrub colonization in the clearings. The aimof this study was to compare the contribution of different annualfluxes and the distribution of organic matter and nitrogen inboth shrub and pine components for the entire catchment. Specialemphasis was placed on the N use strategy shown by the two shrubspecies, a symbiotic N2fixing species (A. decorticans) and anon-fixing species (C. laurifolius). Our results showed that the characteristics of C and N cyclingin the Nacimiento catchment are mainly determined by the earlystage of pine layer development and the significant contributionof the two shrub species differing with respect to C acquisitionand N use. The pine layer was characterized by a low standing biomass,substantial percentages of needle biomass and high (net production/biomass)and (needle production/total net production) ratios. N uptakewas mainly diverted to biomass increment, as shown by the substantialallocation found in this study. Overall, these results are consistentwith the patterns described for even-aged stands during theearly-growth phase. Retranslocation supplied 21% of the annualN requirements for pine above-ground biomass production. C. laurifolius showed low litter-fall return, strong retranslocation,efficient utilization of N in bulk deposition and slow decomposition,suggesting a closer, self-regulated organic matter and N-conservingbehaviour thanA. decorticans . On the contrary,A. decorticansshowed high leaf turnover, strong litter-fall return, low retranslocationand fast mineralization of organic matter and nitrogen, indicatingthat internal organic matter and N cycling is less efficient,and thus, that this species is more dependent on the soil tomeet its N requirements. We studied morphological variation, reproductive biology and genetic structure of Senecio carbonensis, a narrow endemic from high elevations of the southern Andes, and compared it to Senecio peteroanus, a closely related widespread congeneric species. Using ANOVAs and discriminant analysis we showed that populations of S. carbonensis were more similar to each other in their morphology, had comparatively limited reproductive capacity and presented lower plant density and more reduced plant cover than populations of S. peteroanus. Similar high genetic variation was found at the population and species level in both species, based on isozyme variation at 14 and 11 putative gene loci that were resolved in S. carbonensis and S. peteroanus, respectively. The two species were genetically distinct. However, the small genetic distance between populations of each species suggests that either they were recently founded and that genetic drift did not have time to promote divergence, or that its effects are masked by significant current gene flow. These results show that ecological and reproductive characteristics of S. carbonensis may limit its extension and abundance. In contrast, high genetic variation at the population level is probably favored by self‐incompatibility. Despite the restricted geographical distribution and low plant density of S. carbonensis populations, genetic characteristics do not seem to be limiting their long‐term persistence. This information suggests that populations of S. carbonensis are not at risk of extinction as a result of genetic factors, although it is important to study and monitor population dynamics to further assess the degree of recruitment through time.  相似文献

Globally, over 7.4 million accessions of crop seeds are stored in gene banks, and conservation of genotypic variation is pivotal for breeding. We combined genetic and biochemical approaches to obtain a broad overview of factors that influence seed storability and ageing in barley (Hordeum vulgare). Seeds from a germplasm collection of 175 genotypes from four continents grown in field plots with different nutrient supply were subjected to two artificial ageing regimes. Genome‐wide association mapping revealed 107 marker trait associations, and hence, genotypic effects on seed ageing. Abiotic and biotic stresses were found to affect seed longevity. To address aspects of abiotic, including oxidative, stress, two major antioxidant groups were analysed. No correlation was found between seed deterioration and the lipid‐soluble tocochromanols, nor with oil, starch and protein contents. Conversely, the water‐soluble glutathione and related thiols were converted to disulphides, indicating a strong shift towards more oxidizing intracellular conditions, in seeds subjected to long‐term dry storage at two temperatures or to two artificial ageing treatments. The data suggest that intracellular pH and (bio)chemical processes leading to seed deterioration were influenced by the type of ageing or storage. Moreover, seed response to ageing or storage treatment appears to be significantly influenced by both maternal environment and genetic background.  相似文献

Historically, there has been considerable disagreement between researchers about the criteria used to discriminate among species. Decisions based on traditional morphological and genetic data alone can be potentially problematic, especially if the hypotheses are contradictory. Today, taxonomy is integrating new methods from different disciplines that study species' limits and evolution; this diverse range of evidence aids researchers in the recognition of species. Differences in niche characteristics could become a new and useful criterion in helping to decide the status of conflicting taxonomical entities. Ochthebius glaber (family Hydraenidae) is an endangered water beetle typical from southeast Iberian hypersaline streams that shows three clear discrete genetic units within its distribution range. However, there is no evidence to date that these lineages of O. glaber exhibit any adaptive morphological or ecological divergence. Using a modelling approach directed to generate niche representation from distributional data, we found a significant environmental niche divergence for allopatric lineages of O. glaber that followed an aridity gradient. Although we can not conclude firmly at present that the separate populations of O. glaber studied represent separate, reproductively isolated species, the present study complements and supports previous phylogeographic analyses through the inclusion of measures of another form of evolutionary change; in this case, ecological diversification. Despite the existence of some methodological limitations, also discussed in the present study, we emphasize the importance of recent conceptual advances that allow taxonomy to improve species delimitation practices through the integration of theory and methods from disciplines that study the origin and evolution of species. © 2011 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2011, 103 , 891–903.  相似文献

Inland saline waters are globally threatened habitats that harbour unique assemblages of specialist invertebrates. In many Mediterranean regions, irrigation associated with intensive agriculture is lowering the salinity of these habitats, resulting in the loss of their specialist biota, although the mechanisms by which reductions in salinity lead to species loss are poorly understood. In the present study, the effects of reduced salinity on the temperature tolerance and thermal acclimatory abilities of two related species of hypersaline water beetles, Nebrioporus baeticus (Schaum) and Nebrioporus ceresyi (Aubé), are explored. Both upper (UTL) and lower thermal limits (LTL) are assessed, and both salinity and temperature are found to influence the thermal biology of Nebrioporus. Mean UTLs are greater in individuals of both species acclimated at high salinities, with salinity appearing to be more important than acclimation temperature in determining UTL. In both taxa, the lowest mean LTLs are recorded in individuals acclimated at the highest salinities and lowest temperatures; temperature‐dependent acclimation is only reported after exposure to relatively high salinities. The data show that salinity influences the thermal tolerance and acclimatory ability of these hypersaline beetles, and that lowered salinity compromises the ability of adult Nebrioporus to cope with both heat and cold. Such an effect may partly explain why specialist species are lost from hypersaline habitats subject to salinity reductions, and suggests that ongoing reduction in salinity may compromise the ability of such specialist taxa to cope with rapid climate change.  相似文献

Data on patterns of variation within hybrid zones, combined with studies of life history, mate choice, and hybrid performance, allow estimates of the contribution of different pre-zygotic and post-zygotic barriers to reproductive isolation. We examine the role of behavioural barriers to gene exchange in the maintenance of a hybrid zone between North American field crickets Gryllus firmus and Gryllus pennsylvanicus . We consider these barriers in the context of previous studies that documented temporal and ecological isolation and a one-way post-mating incompatibility (i.e. G. firmus females do not produce offspring when they mate only with heterospecific males). Based on no-choice mating experiments in the laboratory, we demonstrate strong behavioural pre-mating barriers between the two species, but no apparent fecundity or fertility costs for G. firmus females when they mate with both conspecific and heterospecific males. Furthermore, we show that G. firmus females do not discriminate between hybrids and conspecifics, whereas G. pennsylvanicus females do. This observation could explain the asymmetric allele introgression observed in the hybrid zone. We also document a failure of heterospecific males to induce normal oviposition in G. firmus females, which may be due to rapid evolution of accessory gland proteins and may serve as an additional barrier to gene exchange.  © 2009 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2009, 97 , 390–402.  相似文献
