De Torres, T., Ortiz, J.E., Arribas, I., Delgado, A., Julià, R. & Martín‐Rubí, J.A. 2009: Geochemistry of Persististrombus latus Gmelin from the Pleistocene Iberian Mediterranean realm. Lethaia, Vol. 43, pp. 149–163. In this paper the organic and inorganic geochemistry of fossil and extant Persististrombus latus are compared, together with other strombid species (Lentigo lentiginosus, Lobatus gigas, Strombus alatus, Lobatus raninus, Laevistrombus canarium and Tricornis latissimus). Using a large sample of well‐preserved fossil P. latus shells from the Mediterranean realm, we examined the warming period of sea water in the Middle Pleistocene. A mineralogical study of the shells demonstrates the continuous presence of calcite and a complex organic matter distribution, which was well preserved in many cases, thereby making the U/Th dating of strombid shells unreliable. U/Th analysis of coral samples and amino acid racemization dating of pelecypod shells confirmed that P. latus entered the Mediterranean realm in MIS 7 and 5. The oscillations of the δ18O values reflect annual growth periods and provide a mixing of the first signal record (primary growth) and successive overgrowths. □Amino acid racemization, Mediterranean Sea, Persististrombus latus, shell mineralogy, U/Th, δ18O.  相似文献

Accelerating taxonomic knowledge and making accurate species identifications are critically important given the current biodiversity crisis, particularly in biodiversity hotspots such as Mesoamerica. Objective species delimitation that reduces investigator‐driven bias is fundamental to the establishment of appropriate conservation strategies, above all in managed species. Previous morphological and molecular studies on three managed stingless bee species of the genus Scaptotrigona distributed in Mexico (S. mexicana, S. pectoralis and S. hellwegeri) suggested that both S. mexicana and S. hellwegeri are cryptic species complexes. Herein we tested species delimitation by analysing sequence information of five markers (two mitochondrial: cox1 and 16S, and three nuclear: ITS1, EF1‐α, ArgK) within a Bayesian coalescent framework to test the putative species. We obtained two different hypotheses using a Generalized Mixed Yule Coalescent (GMYC) model: four (cox1) and six (16S) species. After the species validation step with the Bayesian species‐delimitation analysis (BPP), we suggest that only S. mexicana is a complex of two species with different distribution (along the Pacific and the Atlantic coasts, respectively). We highly recommend avoiding colony exchange between geographical regions in order to conserve the genetic integrity of both taxa.  相似文献

1. Salinity is a strong selective force for many aquatic organisms, affecting both ecological and evolutionary processes. Most of our knowledge on the effects of salinity on rotifers in the Brachionus plicatilis species complex is based mainly on populations from waterbodies that experience broad environmental changes both seasonally and annually. We tested the hypothesis that, despite the supposedly high potential for gene flow among rotifers inhabiting neighbouring environments, constant salinity has promoted local adaptation, genetic population divergence and even cryptic speciation in B. plicatilis complex populations from three deep maar lakes of distinct salinities [1.1, 6.5 and 9.0 g L?1 total dissolved solids (TDS)] in Central Mexico. 2. To look for local adaptation, we performed common garden experiments to test the effect of different salinities on population density and intrinsic growth rate (r). Then, we evaluated the genetic divergence by sequencing the cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) gene and performed reproductive trials to assess the potential gene flow among the three populations and with other closely related B. plicatilis complex species. 3. We confirmed that the rotifer populations have phenotypic plasticity in tolerance of salinity, but only rotifers from the least saline lake are adapted to low salinity. Among the populations, sequence divergence at COI was very low (just a single haplotype was found), suggesting a persistent founder effect from a relatively recent single colonisation event and a subsequent dispersal from one lake to the others, and a very restricted immigration rate. In the phylogenetic analysis, rotifers from this area of Mexico clustered in the same clade with the middle‐sized species Brachionus ibericus and B. sp. ‘Almenara’. Mexican rotifers showed successful recognition, copulation and formation of hybrids among them, but interpopulation breeding with the Spanish B. ibericus and B. sp. ‘Almenara’ was unsuccessful. 4. We conclude that the B. plicatilis complex populations from these three lakes belong to a new biological species not yet described (presently named B. sp. ‘Mexico’). To our knowledge, this is the first report of local adaptation of a natural B. plicatilis complex population living in freshwater conditions (1.1 g L?1 TDS).  相似文献

Avanzini, M., Piñuela, L. & García‐Ramos, J.C. 2011: Late Jurassic footprints reveal walking kinematics of theropod dinosaurs. Lethaia, Vol. 45, pp. 238–252. This study describes a set of theropod footprints collected from the Late Jurassic Lastres Formation (Asturias, N Spain). The footprints are natural casts (tracks and undertracks) grouped into three morphotypes, which are characterized by different size frequency, L/W relationship and divarication angles: ‘Grallatorid’ morphotype, ‘Kayentapus–Magnoavipes’ morphotype, ‘Hispanosauropus’ morphotype. The tracks were produced in firm, stiff and soft sediments. The infills of deep tracks, which are typically formed in soft mud, lack fine anatomical details, but they can reveal the walk kinematics of the trackmaker through the morphology of internal track fills and sinking traces. In all footprints, a horizontal outwardly directed translation movement and rotation are recognizable. The amount and geometry of digit penetration in the ground also show a pronounced difference. It can be inferred from the described sample that different theropoda‐related ichnogenera share common kinematics. □Asturias, dinosaur footprint, late jurassic, theropods, walking kinematics.  相似文献

Castanera, D., Pascual, C., Canudo, J.I., Hernández, N. & Barco, J., 2012: Ethological variations in gauge in sauropod trackways from the Berriasian of Spain. Lethaia, Vol. 45, pp. 476–489. Two sauropod trackways from the Early Cretaceous (Berriasian) of the Cameros Basin (Spain) show important variations in trackway gauge, along the same trackway. These variations seem to be associated with different behaviours; on the one hand with a significant variation in the direction of travel (turning phenomena) and on the other hand with a decrease in speed, probably associated with the properties of the substrate. These variations in sauropod trackways provide the trackway gauge debate with new data, supporting the hypothesis that the walking style and substrate properties may in some cases determine this sauropod character. The study of turning sauropod trackways improves our knowledge of sauropod locomotion. □Ethology, intermediate‐gauge, sauropod trackways, substrate properties, wide‐gauge.  相似文献

Male coleoid cephalopods produce spermatophores that can attach autonomously on the female's body during a complex process of evagination called the ‘spermatophoric reaction’, during which the ejaculatory apparatus and spiral filament of the spermatophore are everted and exposed to the external milieu. In some deepwater cephalopods, the reaction leads to the intradermal implantation of the spermatophore, a hitherto enigmatic phenomenon. The present study builds upon several lines of evidence to propose that spermatophore implantation is probably achieved through the combination of (1) an ‘evaginating‐tube’ mechanism performed by the everting ejaculatory apparatus and (2) the anchorage provided by the spiral filament's stellate particles. The proposed theoretical model assumes that, as it is exposed to the external milieu, each whorl of the spiral filament anchors to the surrounding tissue by means of its sharp stellate particles. As the ejaculatory apparatus tip continues evaginating, it grows in diameter and stretches lengthwise, enlarging the diameter of the whorl and propelling it, consequently tearing and pushing the anchored tissue outward and backward, and opening space for the next whorl to attach. After the ejaculatory apparatus has been everted and has perforated tissue, the cement body is extruded, possibly aiding in final attachment, and the sperm mass comes to lie inside the female tissue, encompassed by the everted ejaculatory apparatus tube. It is proposed that this unique, efficient spermatophore attachment mechanism possibly evolved in intimate relationship with the adoption of an active mode of life by coleoids. The possible roles of predation pressure and sperm competition in the evolution of this mechanism are also discussed. © 2012 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2012, 105 , 711–726.  相似文献

The subgenus Mesocarabus Thomson, 1875 is a western Palaearctic group that currently includes five species: four of them inhabiting western Europe (Carabus lusitanicus Fabricius, 1801, Carabus problematicus Herbst, 1786, Carabus dufourii Dejean & Boisduval, 1829, and Carabus macrocephalus Dejean, 1826) and one found in the Rif Mountains in northern Morocco (Carabus riffensis Fairmaire, 1872). Representatives of Mesocarabus have been included in previous molecular phylogenetic studies, but taxon‐ or gene‐sampling limitations yielded inconclusive results regarding its monophyly and sister relationship. Here we perform molecular phylogenetic analyses based on five mitochondrial (3625 nt) and eight nuclear (5970 nt) genes sequenced in many Mesocarabus populations, and in related western Palaearctic Carabus Linnaeus, 1758. We conducted parsimony, maximum‐likelihood, and Bayesian analyses and found a well‐supported sister relationship between a monophyletic Mesocarabus with Iberian species of the subgenus Oreocarabus Géhin, 1876. Within Mesocarabus, the European species form a monophyletic lineage sister to Moroccan C. riffensis. A time‐calibrated phylogeny suggests the split between Mesocarabus and Oreocarabus occurred at 11.8 Mya (95% highest posterior density, HPD, 8.7–15.3 Mya), and the divergence between C. riffensis and European Mesocarabus at 9.5 Mya (95% HPD 7.0–12.5 Mya). The early diversification of Mesocarabus and related subgenera during the Miocene, and alternative hypotheses concerning the origin of Mesocarabus in the Iberian Peninsula and the Betic‐Riffian plate are discussed using calibration data and dispersal–vicariance biogeographic analyses. Finally, we found instances of incongruence between mitochondrial DNA and nuclear‐based phylogenies of Mesocarabus, which are hypothesized to be the result of introgressive hybridization. © 2012 The Linnean Society of London, Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2012, 166 , 787–804.  相似文献

The variation at the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region of the ribosomal DNA has been correlated with the number of nucleolar organizer regions (NORs) in some plant species. Besides, the number of NORs might influence the rate of homogenization of the rDNA repeats. In recent studies, ITS length variants were detected in bread wheat cultivars but no reports about their presence in durum wheat were found. In the present study, we localized and identified the NORs of 51 old Portuguese durum wheat cultivars by using sequential silver staining and fluorescence in situ hybridization performed with the pTa71 rDNA probe. We also detected ITS length variants by PCR-RFLP. No variation at the number of Ag-NORs per metaphase was found among the 51 durum wheat cultivars, but the PCR-RFLP technique carried out with the restriction enzyme HpaII, allowed the detection of ITS length variants among them. The molecular data was used in order to establish the genetic relationships among cultivars and botanical varieties of durum wheat. The knowledge of this feature could be useful for future design of breeding strategies, involving this collection that constitutes an excellent repository of germplasm in Portugal.  相似文献
