1. Unravelling the strength and modes of interspecific interactions between resident and introduced species is necessary in order to understand the basis of their coexistence or the displacement of the former by the latter. In Argentina, the indigenous Tephritidae fly Anastrepha fraterculus overlaps its distribution and host fruit with the introduced species Ceratitis capitata. 2. This study focused on the relative strength of intra‐ and interspecific competition during the larval stage as a potential factor supporting coexistence. Classical competition experiments (addition and substitution) were conducted between larvae of the two species reared in artificial larval diet. The study evaluated whether a temporal separation between oviposition events affects the outcome of the competition. 3. When both species started to consume the resource at the same time, A. fraterculus experienced a negative effect in larval survival, pupal weight and duration of larval stage, while for C. capitata, pupal weight decreased. When A. fraterculus started feeding 1 day earlier than C. capitata, the negative effects became milder, and when the temporal separation increased, these effects were reversed. Substitution experiments showed an increase in pupal weight when larvae had to share the resource with heterospecific larvae, and showed negative effects suffered for both species when they shared the resource with conspecific individuals. 4. These results suggest that intraspecific competition is stronger than interspecific competition, and a differential oviposition preference could generate an asynchrony of these species in nature. Such mechanisms could favour coexistence between A. fraterculus and C. capitata in an environment previously occupied only by the former.  相似文献

Sequencing of the Trypanosoma cruzi genome is underway. Expressed sequence tags, obtained from cDNA libraries, facilitate mapping and gene discovery. The efficiency of large-scale generation of such tags is increased when using normalized cDNA libraries, where the frequency of individual clones is brought within a narrow range. Repetitive sequencing of abundant clones is therefore minimized. We constructed a normalized cDNA library from epimastigotes of clone CL Brener, and the efficiency of normalization of representative clones was assessed and shown to be adequate. The normalized cDNA library has been distributed to several groups and large-scale sequencing is currently in progress.  相似文献

Neotropical monkeys of the genera Cacajao, Chiropotes, and Pithecia (Pitheciidae) are considered to be highly arboreal, spending most of their time feeding and traveling in the upper canopy. Until now, the use of terrestrial substrates has not been analyzed in detail in this group. Here, we review the frequency of terrestrial use among pitheciin taxa to determine the ecological and social conditions that might lead to such behavior. We collated published and unpublished data from 14 taxa in the three genera. Data were gleaned from 53 published studies (including five on multiple pitheciin genera) and personal communications of unpublished data distributed across 31 localities. Terrestrial activity was reported in 61% of Pithecia field studies (11 of 18), in 34% of Chiropotes studies (10 of 29), and 36% of Cacajao studies (4 of 11). Within Pithecia, terrestrial behavior was more frequently reported in smaller species (e.g. P. pithecia) that are vertical clingers and leapers and make extensive use of the understory than in in the larger bodied canopy dwellers of the western Amazon (e.g. P. irrorata). Terrestrial behavior in Pithecia also occurred more frequently and lasted longer than in Cacajao or Chiropotes. An apparent association was found between flooded habitats and terrestrial activity and there is evidence of the development of a “local pattern” of terrestrial use in some populations. Seasonal fruit availability also may stimulate terrestrial behavior. Individuals also descended to the ground when visiting mineral licks, escaping predators, and responding to accidents such as a dropped infant. Overall, the results of this review emphasize that terrestrial use is rare among the pitheciins in general and is usually associated with the exploitation of specific resources or habitat types. Am. There is currently a debate about the presence of a phylogenetic signal in bone histological data, but very few rigorous tests have fuelled the discussions on this topic. Here, we performed new analyses using a larger set of seven histological traits and including 25 taxa (nine extinct and 16 extant taxa), using three methods: the phylogenetic eigenvector regression, the tree length distribution and the regressions on distance matrices. Our results clearly show that the phylogenetic signal in our sample of bone histological characters is strong, even after correcting for multiple testing. Most characters exhibit a significant phylogenetic signal according to at least one of our three tests, with the phylogeny often explaining 20–60% of the variation in the histological characters. Thus, we conclude that the phylogenetic comparative method should be systematically used in interspecific analyses of bone histodiversity to avoid problems of non‐independence among observations.  相似文献

Petunia axillaris plants were grown under white light (photoperiod10 h). Pulses of end-of-day far-red light, but not red lightat the end of the day slowed down the accumulation of chlorophyllin expanding, greening leaves and reduced chlorophyll contentin mature leaves. The chlorophyll a / b ratio was unaffected.Low phytochrome photoequilibria reduced chlorophyll contentin mature leaves without affecting leaf area or d. wt. Ecdysteroids are polyhydroxylated steroids that act as moulting hormones in arthropods and regulate several important life‐cycle processes. Phytoecdysteroids are ecdysteroid analogues produced by some plants that disrupt the growth and development of insects feeding on them, and can be perceived by the taste receptors of insects. The present study tested the hypothesis that the blood‐feeding tick Rhipicephalus sanguineus (Latreille, 1806) (Acari: Ixodidae) is capable of detecting phytoecdysteroids. By recording from the chelicerae, six phytoecdysteroids are tested: α‐ecdysone, 20‐hydroxyecdysone, ponasterone A, makisterone A, inokosterone and pterosterone. In unfed ticks, makisterone A and pterosterone elicit frequencies of neural impulses higher than in a negative control (a KCl solution at 10?3m ), with detection thresholds of 10?6m and 10?12m , respectively. The spike amplitudes of the responses to these compounds, and also for 20‐hydroxyecdysone and ponasterone A, are higher than in the control, indicating that a different neurone may be involved: perhaps a deterrent cell, as observed in insects. In fed ticks, only pterosterone at 10?4m remains active. In behavioural attachment assays, no difference is observed between electrophysiologically active compounds and the negative control. These results show the capability of R. sanguineus ticks to detect phytoecdysteroids, although they do not clarify the role of ecdysteroids in tick biology, for which further studies are required.  相似文献

The capacity of four bacterial strains isolated from productive soil potato fields to solubilize tricalcium phosphate on Pikovskaya agar or in a liquid medium was evaluated. A bacterial strain was selected to evaluate in vitro capacity of plant-growth promotion on Solanum tuberosum L. culture. Bacterial strain A3 showed the highest value of phosphate solubilization, reaching a 20 mm-diameter halo and a concentration of 350 mg/l on agar and in a liquid medium, respectively. Bacterial strain A3 was identified by 16S rDNA analysis as Bacillus pumilus with 98% identity; therefore, it is the first report for Bacillus pumilus as phosphate solubilizer. Plant-growth promotion assayed by in vitro culture of potato microplants showed that the addition of bacterial strain A3 increased root and stems length after 28 days. It significantly increased stem length by 79.3%, and duplicated the fresh weight of control microplants. In this paper, results reported regarding phosphorus solubilization and growth promotion under in vitro conditions represent a step forward in the use of innocuous bacterial strain biofertilizer on potato field cultures.Key words: Bacillus sp., phosphorus soluble, Pikovskaya agar, potato rhizosphere, plant growth promoting rhizobacteria  相似文献
