Summary Culture of the freshwater pearl mussel, Hyriopsis (Limnoscapha) myersiana, was carried out in three consecutive steps: (1) culture of glochidia larvae in artificial media, (2) rearing the early juveniles (0–120 days old) in a nursery, and (3) rearing the juveniles (120–360 days old) in an earthen pond. The percentage survival of glochidia in standard tissue culture medium (M199) supplemented with common carp plasma was 95±2.5. All surviving larvae (100%) transformed to juveniles, the duration of transformation being 8 days. The early juveniles (0–60 days old) were fed with a mixture of four selected phytoplankton species (Chlorella sp., Kirchneriella incurvata, Navicula sp. and Coccomyxa sp.). The survival rate of juveniles was 8±0.2%. The average length of these juveniles increased from 0.13±0.01 mm to 1.41±0.16 mm and the average height from 0.16±0.01 mm to 0.98±0.09 mm. Subsequently, 60–120-day juveniles were fed with one of the same four phytoplankton species or a combination of the four. Feeding the juveniles with K. incurvata resulted in the highest survival rate (65±8.32%), with an average length of 3.46±0.04 mm and an average height of 1.94±0.04 mm. Finally, the 120–360-day juveniles were cultured in an earthen pond. There were progressive changes in average weight (0.0037±0.002 g to 11.24±5.02 g), length (3.48±0.39 mm to 54.08±6.21 mm), height (1.97±0.24 mm to 25.09±2.48 mm) and width (0.98±0.06 mm to 12.28±3.21 mm) from 120 to 360 days. The average growth rates per day of these parameters were 0.0497±0.01 g, 0.2414±0.15 mm, 0.0975±0.08 mm and 0.0493±0.03 mm, respectively. H. (L.) myersiana juveniles developed the complete structural composition of the adult by 160 days, and at 360 days, gametogenesis was complete. 相似文献

Abstract. 1. The species of Delphacidae captured in nearly 16000 sweeps of salt marsh vegetation in Northwest Florida, U.S.A., are examined. Individuals belonging to fourteen species were captured during the 15-month study, a somewhat larger number than is found in most locations.
2. Abundances ranged from one to 1064 individuals per species. The abundances, habitat preferences, and patterns in wing-polymorphism among the species collected were similar to those reported previously from other locations, but important differences were found which reflect the vegetational composition typical of our study area.
3. Wing-morph ratio differences between delphacid populations may reflect strategies for dealing with differences in stability and distribution of their respective habitats. The ratio of macropter/brachypter individuals in various populations of delphacids investigated correlates with the probability that a dispersing individual will find a more suitable habitat patch. The phenomenon is illustrated with a comparison of wing-morph ratios in populations of Prokelisia marginata (Van Duzee) from locations which differ in the extent, distribution, and stability of their stands of Spartina alterniflora Loisl. (smooth cordgrass), the common host of P.marginata .
4. Macroptery is favoured in Atlantic Coast marshes, where habitat patches are differentially suitable, but extensive and predictable. The probability of finding a better patch by dispersing is therefore high.
5. Brachyptery predominates at Cedar Key, Florida, where habitat patches are extensive, stable, and equally suitable during most of the year; and at St Marks, Florida, where resource patches are small, infrequent, isolated, and regularly disturbed. Under these conditions, the probability of finding a better patch by dispersal is low.
6. The conditions at St Marks may have promoted a local host expansion by P.marginata at this location. 相似文献

1. Two field experiments were conducted to test the hypothesis that the intensity of predation by a generalist predator on two species of prey changes with the developmental stage of the predator. The generalist predator studied was Zelus renardii Kolenati (Hemiptera: Reduviidae) and the prey were the lacewing larva, Chrysoperla carnea Stephens, and the cotton aphid, Aphis gossypii Glover.
2. Zelus renardii and lacewings feed on aphids, thereby acting as potential competitors. In addition, Z. renardii feeds on lacewings. Thus, Z. renardii is an intraguild predator of lacewings.
3. Zelus renardii exhibited changes in prey preferences across developmental stages. The older stages of Z. renardii exerted greater mortality on lacewings and fed on larger lacewing larvae than did the younger stages.
4. Lacewings suppressed aphid population growth strongly. In contrast, none of the stages of Z. renardii was an effective control agent of the cotton aphid.
5. The addition of Z. renardii frequently disrupted the effective control of aphids generated by lacewings. In one of the two replicates of the experiment, the disruption increased with the developmental stage of Z. renardii , paralleling the increase in lacewing mortality.
6. Although the developmental stage of Z. renardii can influence the prevalence of intraguild predation and the intensity of the disruption of the aphid biological control, these experiments have demonstrated that even the youngest instars of Z. renardii can cause substantial lacewing mortality and release aphid populations from regulation. 相似文献

1. Recently, a mutualistic relationship has been described between some dung beetles (Thorectes lusitanicus and Mycotrupes lethroides) and oak species (Quercus suber, Q. canariensis, and Q. rubra), which could be crucial for ensuring seedling recruitment and sustaining the equilibrium of oak populations. For T. lusitanicus, a diet based on acorns during the reproductive period improved resistance to low‐temperature conditions and improved ovarian development. 2. In this paper, we conducted field and laboratory experiments to investigate the interaction between two potential acorn‐eating beetles, Thorectes baraudi and Jekelius nitidus, with Quercus suber. We determined the feeding preferences of both beetle species and estimated the rates of acorn manipulation by beetles according to habitat structure and several characteristics of the acorn, such as seed size and acorn infestation by weevils. 3. Results demonstrated the positive interaction between the dung beetle Thorectes baraudi and Quercus trees. Thorectes baraudi was clearly more attracted to volatiles of acorns than to dung. Jekelius nitidus, on the contrary, was either not or anecdotally attracted to acorns. On the contrary, in the case of Jekelius nitidus, the acorn attraction could be considered anecdotal or even accidental. Our field results demonstrated the acorn burying behaviour of T. baraudi in the oak forests of the Cabañeros National Park (Spain), suggesting a potential role of this beetle species as an active secondary acorn disperser. 4. This unexpected behaviour could be particularly important in Mediterranean oak forests and savannahs, where most Quercus species are strongly recruitment limited because of serious overgrazing problems. 相似文献

Casal, J. J., Sáchez, R. A. and Deregibus, V. A. 1987.Tillering responses of Lolium multiflorum plants to changesof red/far-red ratio typical of sparse canopies.J. exp.Bot. 38: 14321439. Plants of Lolium multiflorum were grown either in growth roomsunder radiation sources providing equivalent PAR but differentR/FR ratios between 0·46 and 2·36, or under sunlightsupplemented with a series of small fluence rates of FR throughoutthe photoperiod. In both kinds of experiments a reduction oftillering was found along with small depressions of R/FR ratiobelow the values typical of sunlight. In this range both thesquare-root-transformed rate of tillering and the site-fillingrate were linearly related to the estimated phytochrome photo-equilibriaand the slope was very steep under conditions that allowed hightillering rates. The addition of low fluence rates of red lightat the base of the shoots raised tillering of plants exposedto low R/FR ratios to the level of plants grown under high R/FRratios in spite of the ratios received by the rest of the plant. Moreover, irradiation of plant bases with intermediate-low R/FRratios reduced tillering indicating that this would be one siteof perception. These results show a high sensitivity to changesof R/FR ratio typical of different degrees of shade in sparsecanopies. This suggests that by monitoring these changes Loliummultiflorum plants would be able to perceive an anticipatedsignal of impending competition in growing canopies. 相似文献

Meliwillea bivea gen.n., sp.n. is the only known stingless bee genus endemic to Central America. External morphology and male genitalia show affinity of Meliwillea with Scaptotrigona . Its plesiomorphies and current sympatry with Scaptotrigona suggest Meliwillea is relictual and diverged in montane habitat during the Tertiary, predating the Pleistocene connection between Central and South America which allowed immigration by Scaptotrigona . Addition of Meliwillea to the list of Neotropical genera changes the phylogenetic position of Nannotrigona , making it sister to Paratrigona instead of Scaptotrigona . 相似文献

1. Ants are highly interactive organisms and dominant species are considered to be able to control the species richness of other ants via competitive exclusion. However, depending on the scale studied, inter‐specific competition may or may not structure biological assemblages. To date, ant dominance–richness relationships have only been studied in small sample units, where a few dominant colonies could plausibly control most of the sample unit. 2. We conducted a comprehensive survey of terrestrial ant assemblages using bait, pitfall, and litter‐sorting methods in three sites in Brazilian Amazonia. Using a spatially structured rarefaction approach, based on sampling units with linear dimensions ranging from 25 to 250 m, the mesoscale patterns of ant dominance–richness relationships (sampling units covering hundreds of meters separated by kilometers) were investigated. 3. Interference–competition models (parabolic or negative linear relationships between species richness and the abundance of dominant ants) tended to be more frequent in smaller sample units or in assemblages sampled with interactive methods, such as baits. Using more inclusive sampling methods, the relationship was generally asymptotic rather than parabolic, with no reduction in species diversity because of the presence of dominants. Random co‐occurrence patterns of species within sites support the interpretation of a limited role for present‐day competition in structuring these assemblages. 4. Competition from dominant species may reduce species richness in small areas, especially when artificial baits are used, but appears to be less important than environmental constraints in determining ant species richness across scales of hectares and greater in these Amazon forests. 相似文献

Abstract: The vertebrate community of the late Miocene locality of Batallones-1, Madrid Province, Spain, is mainly composed of mammals of the order Carnivora, which represents 98 per cent of the total number of macro-mammal fossils. Here, we describe craniodental remains of approximately 12 individuals of a new, highly specialized member of the Amphicyonidae, previously assigned to Amphicyon sp. cf. A. castellanus . A phylogenetic analysis of Amphicyoninae shows that this new form, named Magericyon anceps gen. et sp. nov., is markedly distinct from all other known Amphicyoninae, specifically in its hypercarnivorous features (strongly compressed upper canines, absence of dP1/dp1 and P2/p2, single-rooted p3, absence of a metaconid on the lower molars, and reduction of M2 relative to M1). 相似文献
