The genetic diversity and structure of four populations of the cycad Zamia loddigesii were studied throughout its range in Mexico. Allozyme electrophoresis of 15 loci was conducted. The mean number of alleles per locus was 1.80 ± 0.09, the percentage of polymorphic loci was 66.6 ± 5.4, and the expected heterozygosity was 0.266 ± 0.02. The results indicated that the genetic diversity was relatively higher, with respect to tropical tree species and other cycads. The genetic variation explained by differences among populations was 18%. On average, gene flow between paired populations was similar ( Nm  = 1.6) to other tropical forest trees and cycad species. Our results indicated that the geographical isolation among populations of Z. loddigesii generated allele loss, as well as a clinal variation in the frequencies of two loci ( MDH and MNR2 ), in relation to the latitudinal distribution of populations. The populations have become fragmented due to increasingly higher pressure of habitat conversion and disturbance. The importance of the establishment of sanctuaries and protected areas and a reduction in deforestation is highlighted in this research as a way of preserving the high genetic diversity of this and other endemic species.  © 2006 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society , 2006, 152 , 533–544.  相似文献

Summary

The land snail Leptaxis caldeirarum(Morelet and Drouet, 1857), a hermaphrodite Hygromiidae species, endemic from São Miguel Island (Azores), is geographically limited to a range of 31 km2, occupying an area of about 14 km2 A preliminary study confirmed the locally endangered status of the species, raising the possibility that it could reach the “critically in danger” status, the most serious category in IUCN. A population from Ramal dos Mosteiros was studied all year round in order to elucidate its reproductive cycle and to test the validity of the total weight of the animal and the maximum diameter of the shell as diagnostic parameters for maturation. Gonadal maturation of L. caldeirarum proceeds from late winter to early summer. Intense gametogenesis takes place from January until May and the snail is apparently in a reproductive condition to copulate from late spring onwards. The strong correlation observed between the relative volumetric density of mature gametes and the maximum diameter of the shell suggests that the reproductive status of the species can be inferred from the latter parameter. This may be of major importance in future studies, minimizing potential damage to already unstable populations, and facilitating the development of conservation strategies.  相似文献

Shoot and root growth rate, carbohydrate accumulation (includingfructan), reducing sugar content and dry matter percentage weremeasured in six wheat cultivars, ranging from winter to springtypes, grown at either 5 or 25 °C. At 5 °C (comparedwith 25 °C), the relative growth rate (RGR) of shoots wassimilarly reduced in all cultivars, but the RGR of shoots wasmore affected in winter wheats. This difference resulted insmaller root:shoot ratios than in spring wheats, which alsodeveloped more first-order lateral roots. A direct relationshipbetween carbohydrate accumulation at low temperatures and reductionin root growth was established. Paleomagnetic analysis of the section of Purcal (Granada Basin) shows that the entire sequence has reversed polarity. The micromammal fauna contains elements that are typical of the latest Miocene, and others that are earliest Pliocene; both are characteristic of humid surroundings. The section should be placed in Chron C3r, and the fauna indicates the Miocene-Pliocene transition.  相似文献

Abstract: A systematic revision of the sabre‐toothed cat genus Paramachaerodus  Pilgrim, 1913 is presented. Two species are recognized within Paramachaerodus, Pa. orientalis, and Pa. maximiliani, and the genus Promegantereon  Kretzoi, 1938 is retrieved to include Promegantereon ogygia. Material from the Turolian Spanish localities of Crevillente‐2 (MN 11, Alicante) and Las Casiones (MN 13, Teruel), which was previously assigned to Paramachaerodus, is now included in the tribe Metailurini. The exceptional discoveries at the Spanish Vallesian (MN 10, Madrid) fossil site of Batallones‐1 have made it possible to characterize the dentition and cranial anatomy of a previously very poorly known machairodontine cat, formerly included in Paramachaerodus as Pa. ogygia, which now can be distinguished from Pa. orientalis and Pa. maximiliani by the following features: canines without crenulations, P3 with a marked disto‐lingual expansion, P4 without ectostyle and with a well‐developed protocone, M1 bucco‐lingually elongated and double‐rooted, m1 with a larger talonid, and primitive mandible morphology. Thus, the population from Batallones‐1 constitutes a clearly different form from the genus Paramachaerodus, and we propose its inclusion in the genus Promegantereon  Kretzoi, 1938 , together with an upper canine from Crevillente‐2 (MN 11), very similar to those from Batallones‐1. In contrast, Pa. orientalis shows the following apomorphies: crenulated canines, P3 reduced in size and without disto‐lingual expansion, P4 with a clear ectostyle as well as a reduced, backwardly displaced protocone and with a rounded and single‐rooted M1. The species Pa. maximiliani is characterized by its slightly larger size, crenulated canines, very elongated P3 with a moderate disto‐lingual expansion and P4 and M1 similar to those of Pa. orientalis. Paramachaerodus orientalis is recorded at Puente Minero (MN 11, Teruel), Concud (MN 12, Teruel), Crevillente‐15, and Crevillente‐16 (both MN 12, Alicante), and Paramachaerodus maximiliani in Venta del Moro (MN 13, Valencia). The available data suggest that Pr. ogygia was present in the Iberian Late Vallesian and Early Turolian faunas (MN 10 and MN 11) but disappeared after that age. Paramachaerodus was present in the faunas throughout the Turolian, with the species Pa. orientalis and Pa. maximiliani, this latter being probably part of the same immigration event that occurred in the Late Turolian and involved other mammal taxa such as camelids and ursids.  相似文献

Abstract:  The ichnospecies Phagophytichnus pseudocircus isp. nov. is described to include trace fossils characterized by leaf-margin excisions showing eccentricity values of 0.35–0.65 and more than 270 degrees of an arc, a non cuspate margin and vein stringers or necrotic flaps of tissue along the margin. A method for determining ellipse eccentricity was performed on leaf discs obtained from the nests of the modern leafcutter bee Megachile rotundata (Hymenoptera: Megachilidae), which provided objectively obtained values comparable to the trace fossil from the middle Eocene of Argentina and other world-wide ichnological records, historically and subjectively considered to be 'circular' trace fossils and attributed to leafcutter bees. The material described herein represents the first evidence for fossil Megachilidae from the Southern Hemisphere.  相似文献

The systematic study of Central American moss salamanders has been a challenge to researchers due to their cryptic nature and subsequent difficulty in sampling. In an effort to elucidate relationships among moss salamanders from the Chortís Highlands, we quantified intra- and interspecific variation using data from the mitochondrial genes 16S (the amphibian barcoding gene), cytochrome b (cyt b; widely used in phylogenetic studies of neotropical salamanders), and cytochrome oxidase subunit I (COI, the universal metazoan barcoding gene). All three loci exhibit a bimodal ‘barcoding gap’ between ranges of intra- and interspecific variation, demonstrating unambiguous species boundaries with respect to the mitochondrial loci. A barcoding approach and Bayesian and maximum likelihood analyses of the mtDNA dataset revealed that the nominal species N. barbouri represents a species complex, with two of three populations assigned to this taxon being paraphyletic with respect to a sample from the type locality. These data also revealed an undescribed species from eastern Honduras, and confirmed the identity of allopatric populations of N. lignicola and N. limnospectator. Sequence data from cyt b presented an analytical challenge due to a high level of substitution saturation at the third codon position for some samples. Phylogenetic analyses of the entire dataset including and omitting the third position of cyt b resulted in conflicting results with respect to the position of the new species and N. tomamorum. Based on the molecular data, supplemented with data from external morphology and osteology, we formally describe a new species from Sierra de Agalta.  相似文献

Hydroptilidae constitute the most diverse caddisfly family, with over 2000 species known from every habitable continent. Leucotrichiinae are exclusively New World microcaddisflies, currently including over 200 species and 17 genera. Phylogenetic analyses of Leucotrichiinae relationships based on 114 morphological characters and 2451 molecular characters from DNA sequences were conducted. DNA sequences analysed were from one mitochondrial gene, cytochrome oxidase I (653 bp), and four nuclear genes, carbamoylphosphate synthase (802 bp), elongation factor 1α (352 bp), histone 3 (308 bp) and 28S rDNA (336 bp). The morphological matrix included 94 taxa (with representatives of all included genera) and the molecular matrix included 62 taxa. Individual and combined datasets were analysed under parsimony and Bayesian inference. In addition, a relaxed molecular clock divergence time estimate was conducted to determine the age of the subfamily and major lineages. All Bayesian inference analyses strongly suggest a monophyletic Leucotrichiinae, which initially diverged at approximately 124 Ma into two monophyletic groups of genera. These groups are herein elevated to tribal status, Alisotrichiini trib.n. and Leucotrichiini Flint sensu n. Several genera of Leucotrichiini were not recovered as monophyletic clades and some nomenclatural changes are proposed to reflect their phylogenetic history. These include the synonymy of Abtrichia with Peltopsyche; transfer of Betrichia hamulifera to Costatrichia; transfer of Betrichia alibrachia and Costatrichia falsa to Leucotrichia; and transfer of Costatrichia fluminensis to Acostatrichia. Additionally, Tupiniquintrichia gen.n. is described to include Peltopsyche maclachlani and Leucotrichia procera. According to our results, crown diversifications of both Alisotrichiini trib.n. (~80 Ma) and Leucotrichiini sensu n. (~103 Ma) occurred after complete separation of South America from Africa. Current distributions of most leucotrichiine genera are probably a result of migration from South America towards the north using the proto‐Caribbean archipelago (100 to 49 Ma).
