Consistent, repeatable segregation of plant species along hydrological gradients is an established phenomenon that must in some way reflect a trade‐off between plants' abilities to tolerate the opposing constraints of drought and waterlogging. In C3 species tissue carbon isotope discrimination (δ13C) is known to vary sensitively in response to stomatal behaviour, reflecting stomatal limitation of photosynthesis during the period of active growth. However, this has not been studied at fine‐spatial scale in natural communities. We tested how δ13C varied between species and sexes of individuals in the family Restionaceae growing along a monitored hydrological gradient. Twenty Restionaceae species were investigated using species‐level phylogeny at two sites in the Cape Floristic Region, a biodiversity hotspot. A spatial overlap analysis showed the Restionaceae species segregated significantly (P < 0.001) at both sites. Moreover, there were significant differences in δ13C values among the Restionaceae species (P < 0.001) and between male and female individuals of each species (P < 0.01). However, after accounting for phylogeny, species δ13C values did not show any significant correlation with the hydrological gradient. We suggest that some other variable (e.g. plant phenology) could be responsible for masking a simple response to water availability.  相似文献

In the study of gastropod shell morphology, determination of comparable ontogenetic stages is crucial, because all the states that various shell features go through during ontogeny are preserved on the shell. The protoconch/teleoconch transition and marks of episodic growth are among the few ways of defining discrete, comparable, growth stages. In gastropods with determinate growth the attainment of adulthood may provide additional shell markers permitting comparison among individuals and taxa. Adulthood is reflected in shell morphology in ways as diverse as shell deposition covering all the previous whorls and radically changing the shape of the shell through to slight changes in the trajectory of the suture. While the very prominent adulthood‐related changes of shell morphology have been used as systematic characters, the more moderate changes have not been studied in detail and their potential systematic value has been ignored. In this paper we give a detailed account of adult modifications of the shell appearing with cessation of growth. Our study group comprises eight closely related species of Lavigeria from Lake Tanganyika. We show that the ways adulthood is manifested are quite diverse. We describe eight characters of the aperture, the suture and the sculptural ornamentation. Character occurrence varies greatly among species. We show that characters appear in suites and that in many cases their appearance is connected to size. We use size as a proxy for adulthood and test whether character occurrence alone or its connection to size can help resolve species relationships. In both cases our characters confirm the monophyly of our ingroup and yield cladograms with various degrees of resolution of ingroup relationships. The coding method that yields the greater character congruence is the one that takes into consideration the connection between appearance of a character and size. A total of 15 microsatellite primers pairs were developed for the Australian small‐eyed snake Rhinoplocephalus nigrescens. Five primers were used to screen 93 individuals of R. nigrescens and were also tested against eight species of the closely related genus Suta. Allelic diversity in R. nigrescens was high in three loci (12–27) and there was high heterozygosity (0.58–0.82). Observed heterozygosity did not deviate from Hardy–Weinberg expectations for the five loci tested. These primers will be useful in studies of population genetics and mating systems of small‐eyed snakes and related species.  相似文献

1. Stable carbon isotope studies have been an essential component of research regarding the contribution of methane (CH4)-derived carbon to freshwater food webs and results have suggested that benthic macroinvertebrates in billabongs, streams and lakes may be partially, and in some instances, significantly 'fuelled' by methanotrophic biomass. However, the singular use of carbon isotopes can lead to ambiguous interpretations concerning the origin of carbon, especially in systems where phototrophs are likely to be using carbon respired sources and hence show more 13C-depleted values.
2. These uncertainties can be further resolved by the inclusion of additional isotopic data. Stable hydrogen isotopes are being increasingly used in food web studies with a marked advantage that sources may be isotopically distinct by one or two orders of magnitude greater than stable carbon or nitrogen, the isotopes most commonly used to delineate trophic interactions. By using hydrogen as a second biogeochemical tracer we provide further supportive evidence for the assimilation of methanotrophic microbial biomass by chironomid larvae.
3. Moreover, the hydrogen and carbon isotope values we found in chironomid tissues appear to reflect the original substrate used during methanogenesis; either acetate fermentation or carbonate reduction. Use of the former tends to result in relatively heavy carbon and light hydrogen isotope values due to kinetic isotope effects, whereas use of the latter results in relatively lighter carbon and heavier hydrogen isotope values.
4. We provide preliminary evidence to suggest that hydrogen and carbon isotope values in macroinvertebrates may be used to distinguish between CH4 formation pathways and help to explain inter-depth and inter-specific differences between co-existing chironomid species found in the same lake.  相似文献

The recognition of broad biogeographic provinces provides an important framework for ecological and conservation biological research. Marine biologists have long recognized distinct biogeographic provinces in southern Australia, primarily on the basis of qualitative differences in intertidal species assemblages. Here we provide an a priori test for these traditional eastern (Peronian), western (Flindersian) and south‐eastern (Maugean) provinces. Specifically, we analyse distributional data for approximately 1500 algal species using the newly available Australian Virtual Herbarium, an online database of herbarium specimens. Our quantitative algal analyses across southern Australia identify three distinct biogeographic assemblages, consistent with traditional qualitative provinces. We argue that these broad provinces provide a highly effective framework for understanding and managing Australia's marine biodiversity. In particular, biogeographic provinces provide a regional framework for integrating the ongoing discovery of biological variation at finer scales. More broadly therefore we recommend that biologists undertake quantitative analyses to test provincial biogeographic boundaries around the globe.  相似文献

A survey of 35 species indicates that monitor lizards (Varanus) typically hunt over large areas, search in particular microhabitats, and feed frequently on a wide variety of prey, many of which are relatively small. There is ontogenetic, seasonal, and geographic variation in diet. With some exceptions, invertebrates are the predominant prey, but rare predation on vertebrates is often energetically significant. A few monitors specialize on prey types that occur as occasional items in the diet of species with more generalized diets; these include crabs, snails, orthopterans, lizards, and large mammals. For most species, prey specialization occurs via habitat selection and a variety of prey types and sizes are eaten, as expected for widely searching predators. Comparisons with other anguimorphans suggest that derived features of Varanus are associated with high body temperature and activity levels; specialized chemoreception; and rapid, skillful capture of hidden and/or potentially hard to catch prey. Occasional ingestion of moderately large prey is primitive for Varanoidca (Helodermatidae +Varanidae), accentuating a trend that is perhaps primitive for anguimorphan lizards. Reduction of very large prey prior to ingestion is a derived attribute within Varanus , seen infrequently in several larger species and commonly in V. komodoensis. This study illustrates the synthesis of comparative natural history in a phylogenetic context, a method that addresses the history of organismal change.  相似文献

The estuaries of the Taf, Tywi, Gwendraeth and Loughor (Carmarthen Bay, South Wales), and the Taw and Torridge (North Devon) were surveyed during the spring and summer of 1988, as part of a four year study of harbours, rias and estuaries in southern Britain commissioned by the Nature Conservancy Council. The aims of these surveys were to describe the major marine habitats and communities present in each estuary, and to assess their nature conservation importance. This paper outlines the results of these surveys, concentrating on the many environmental similarities between the six estuaries.  相似文献

1. Freshwater shrimps often dominate the biomass of tropical island streams and are known to have strong effects on stream ecosystem structure and function, but little effort has been dedicated toward quantifying basic energetic and life history attributes such as growth, production and longevity. Such information is critical for understanding both the role of shrimps in ecosystem dynamics and the gravity of threats to shrimp populations posed by human activities such as shrimp harvesting, dam construction and water withdrawal. 2. We quantified growth rates and secondary production of dominant freshwater shrimps for 3 years in two Puerto Rican headwater streams that differ in food web structure because of the presence or absence of predatory fishes that are excluded from reaches above waterfalls. Using growth data, we constructed a minimum longevity model to explore the likely minimum life spans of the two dominant taxa (Atya spp. and Xiphocaris elongata). Finally, we used a bioenergetics model to quantify annual consumption rates of major basal resources by the two taxa. 3. Daily growth rates ranged from ?0.001 to 0.011 day?1, were inversely related to body size, and were higher for small individuals of X. elongata than Atya spp. Mean annual shrimp biomass and secondary production were an order of magnitude higher in the stream that lacked predatory fishes (biomass: 4.34 g AFDM m?2; production: 0.89 g AFDM m?2 year?1) than in the stream with predatory fishes (biomass: 0.12 g AFDM m?2; production: 0.02 g AFDM m?2 year?1). Production : biomass ratios ranged from 0.01 to 0.38. 4. Our longevity model predicted a minimum life span of 8 years for Atya spp. and 5 years for X. elongata in the stream lacking predatory fishes. In contrast, due to a larger average size of X. elongata in the stream with predatory fishes, our model predicted a minimum life span of 11 years. Actual life spans of these taxa are likely to be much longer based on long‐term observations of marked individuals. 5. Estimated consumption rates from the bioenergetics model indicated that Atya spp. and X. elongata are important processors of organic matter resources in streams where they occur at high densities. Atya spp. and X. elongata appeared capable of consuming a large proportion of algal and insect production and the proportion of direct leaf litter inputs consumed was also appreciable (c. 40–60%). However, the consumption of suspended fine particulate organic matter (SFPOM) by Atya spp. is probably only a minor proportion of total SFPOM flux in these streams. 6. Our study suggests that geomorphic features such as waterfalls may play an important role in controlling the distribution and production of freshwater shrimps through their effects on predatory fish movement. Spatial differences in shrimp densities result in landscape‐scale variation in the significance to ecosystem processes of these long‐lived organisms, particularly as processors of major organic matter resources.  相似文献

Abstract: Fecal nitrogen (FN) has been applied widely as an index of dietary quality in studies of nutritional ecology of free-ranging and captive vertebrate herbivores, particularly ruminants. Three related articles in the Journal of Wildlife Management (JWM; Leslie and Starkey 1985, 1987; Hobbs 1987) have been cited (n = 150) in 87 publications and 39 peer-reviewed journals. The critique by Hobbs (1987) and the reply by Leslie and Starkey (1987) on limitations and appropriate applications of FN have been used to justify use of FN or negate its value as a nutritional proxy. We undertook a retrospective analysis of FN applications since 1985, largely because we sensed that methodological cautions noted in the 3 JWM publications were not being followed, leading to faulty conclusions and management applications, and that application protocols needed updating. From January 1986 through July 2007, the 107 species-by-continent applications of FN, citing the 3 JWM publications singly or in any combination, were diverse; FN was used in various ways on 5 continents and for 50 wild and domestic species. Cumulative rates of departure from recommended FN applications increased in recent years, largely in studies that compare different species while failing to fully acknowledge that differences likely reflected digestive capabilities rather than differences in some aspect of dietary intake. Post-1985 research on plant secondary compounds (e.g., tannins) has refined limitations to the application of FN, permitting more straightforward protocols than were possible in 1985. Although use does not necessarily reflect value, the number of published applications during the past 22 years indicates that peer reviewers from a variety of scientific disciplines view FN as a suitable proxy for nutritional status, which can be used to contrast study units when carefully defined by the study design. Any index can have shortcomings, and there are still circumstances when application of FN is problematic. Precise prediction of intake with FN under field conditions is still hampered by inherent variability, but contrasts of comparable study units and species can be appropriate. Published protocols for FN, as amended herein, should be adhered to, and conclusions are strengthened by the use of multiple nutritional indices.  相似文献
