In this paper we set forth what we believe to be a relatively controversial argument, claiming that ‘bioethics’ needs to undergo a fundamental change in the way it is practised. This change, we argue, requires philosophical bioethicists to adopt reflexive practices when applying their analyses in public forums, acknowledging openly that bioethics is an embedded socio‐cultural practice, shaped by the ever‐changing intuitions of individual philosophers, which cannot be viewed as a detached intellectual endeavour. This said, we argue that in order to manage the personal, social and cultural embeddedness of bioethics, philosophical bioethicists should openly acknowledge how their practices are constructed and should, in their writing, explicitly deal with issues of bias and conflict of interest, just as empirical scientists are required to do.  相似文献

The incidence of wounds infected by Phoma exigua var. foveata was increased if freshly damaged tubers (recipients) were shaken in a bag with diseased tubers (donors) to simulate the tuber-to-tuber contact that occurs during potato handling. An increase in the number of gangrene rots on damage points also occurred if the recipient tubers were wounded after contact with the diseased tubers, rather than before, and when the donor tubers were heavily infested with P. exigua var. foveata but were free of gangrene lesions. Increasing the proportion of donor to recipient tubers increased the percentage of infected wounds on recipients. Increased incidences of infection in recipient tubers also occurred after they had been passed over an elevator digger when it was lifting stocks of tubers heavily infested with P. exigua var. foveata. When spores of an E +ve isolate of P. exigua var. foveata were sprayed onto the webs of manned potato harvesters, tubers harvested immediately after developed gangrene rots from many of which the E +ve isolate was cultured. An E +ve isolate was also used to demonstrate the transfer of P. exigua var. foveata inoculum from tubers onto soil on riddles of a potato grader and from these soil-coated surfaces onto other tubers during grading.  相似文献

Plantain-derived tetraploid hybrids are routinely crossed inMusabreedingprogrammes with diploidMusaaccessions for the efficient generationof putative triploid hybrid seed. However, natural open pollinationof these same tetraploid hybrids also consistently generatesviable seed. The mean germination rate of such open pollinatedseed was observed to be higher than that of seed generated fromartificial pollinations. This may suggest that tetraploidMusahybridsplayed a much more important role in the evolution of triploidMusalandracesthan previously considered. Moreover, the elite performanceof certain hybrids generated through such open pollination offerspossibilities of newMusabreeding paradigms. Few studies show how morphological vestigialization may facilitate functional innovation. Fewer still describe the co‐occurrence of the derived and more ancestral structures in the same genetic individual. In the present study, we explore that rare instance in a modular (colonial) marine invertebrate. Using laser scanning confocal microscopy with fluorescent staining and behavioural observations, we describe homologous structures in polymorphic modules (zooids) in the bryozoan Bugula flabellata and document the occurrence of previously unreported retractor and circular muscles in the more derived module, the bird's‐head avicularium. In the evolution of a sessile feeding zooid to a moveable nonfeeding zooid with sensory and grasping functions, transformations were effected in the food‐capture apparatus, orificial structures, musculature, and sensory structures. We expand on and clarify previous reports of homologies between ancestral and derived modules in bryozoans and argue that vestigialization and augmentation of homologous structures were coincident with functional innovations in the avicularium. Abstract: Survival and cause-specific mortality of pronghorns (Antilocapra americana) have been well-documented in several western states and Canadian provinces. However, no information has been collected in western South Dakota, USA, where mixed-grass prairie habitats characterize rangelands. The objectives of our study were to determine survival and cause-specific mortality of adult (>18 months) and yearling (6-18 months) pronghorns and to determine monthly and summer (Jun-Aug) survival for neonatal (<1 month of age) pronghorns in South Dakota. We radiocollared 93 adult female and 142 neonatal pronghorns on 3 areas in western South Dakota. We used bed sites from initial neonate captures to collect microhabitat information throughout Harding and Fall River counties. We measured vegetation understory and overstory height, shrub canopy, and distance to nearest concealment cover to the nearest centimeter inside 1-m2 quadrats by collecting measurements at 15 random points within a 30-m radius of the bed site. We documented that coyote (Canis latrans) predation was the primary cause of mortality for neonates in western South Dakota and that microhabitat characteristics at neonate bed sites differed between northwestern and southwestern South Dakota. More intensive aerial predator control may increase neonate survival in Fall River County. Management of rangelands by state and federal employees throughout western South Dakota and Wind Cave National Park that maximizes height of overstory and understory vegetation would provide neonates with adequate concealment cover for protection from predators, thereby increasing 4-week and 12-week postcapture survival. Our study provides South Dakota game managers with region-specific, annual and seasonal survival rates that were previously only estimated, thus improving the accuracy of simulated pronghorn population model output. Hunting was the primary cause of mortality (26%) for adult females in Harding and Fall River counties, thereby confirming the continued use of annual harvest by South Dakota game managers as the primary management tool for maintaining pronghorn populations within statewide population management goals.  相似文献

The spatial scale over which genetic divergences occur between populations and the extent that they are paralleled by morphological differences can vary greatly among marine species. In the present study, we use a hierarchical spatial design to investigate genetic structure in Heliocidaris erythrogramma occurring on near shore limestone reefs in Western Australia. These reefs are inhabited by two distinct subspecies: the thick‐spined Heliocidaris erythrogramma armigera and the thin‐spined Heliocidaris erythrogramma erythrogramma, each of which also have distinct colour patterns. In addition to pronounced morphological variation, H. erythrogramma exhibits a relatively short (3–4 days) planktonic phase before settlement and metamorphosis, which limits their capacity for dispersal. We used microsatellite markers to determine whether patterns of genetic structure were influenced more by morphological or life history limitations to dispersal. Both individual and population‐level analyses found significant genetic differentiation between subspecies, which was independent of geographical distance. Genetic diversity was considerably lower within H. e. erythrogramma than within H. e. armigera and genetic divergence was four‐fold greater between subspecies than among populations within subspecies. This pattern was consistent even at fine spatial scales (< 5 km). We did detect some evidence of gene flow between the subspecies; however, it appears to be highly restricted. Within subspecies, genetic structure was more clearly driven by dispersal capacity, although weak patterns of isolation‐by‐distance suggest that there may be other factors limiting gene exchange between populations. Our results show that spatial patterns of genetic structure in Western Australian H. erythrogramma is influenced by a range of factors but is primarily correlated with the distribution of morphologically distinct subspecies. This suggests the presence of reproductive barriers to gene exchange between them and demonstrates that morphological variation can be a good predictor of genetic divergence. © 2011 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2011, 103 , 578–592.  相似文献

Abstract Chemical knockdown is a commonly used method for sampling canopy arthropods. The procedure is susceptible to high winds and in certain conditions may be virtually unusable. Here we introduce a new procedure, branchlet shaking, and compare it with chemical knockdown. Samples produced by branchlet shaking yield fewer arthropods per tree and tend to miss some larger (>1.0cm) and some smaller (<0.2cm) animals. However, the two procedures generally produce data which can portray similar information about the canopy fauna. It is concluded that although chemical knockdown is a superior sampling procedure, branchlet shaking is a possible alternative for situations where chemical knockdown is impractical. Interpretation of the data must, however, take into account the limitations of the branchlet shaking procedure.  相似文献

The physical sites of 18S-5.8S-25S and 5S rRNA genes and telomericsequences in theMusaL. genome were localized by fluorescentinsituhybridization on mitotic chromosomes of selected lines.A single major intercalary site of the 18S-5.8S-25S rDNA wasobserved on the short arm of the nucleolar organizing chromosomein each genome. AA and BB genome diploids had a single pairof sites, triploids had three sites while a tetraploid hybridhad four sites. The probe is useful for quick determinationof ploidy, even using interphase nuclei from slowly growingtissue culture material. Variation in the intensity of signalswas observed among heterogeneousMusalines indicating variationin the number of copies of the 18S-5.8S-25S rRNA genes. Eightsubterminal sites of 5S rDNA were observed in Calcutta 4 (AA)while Butohan 2 (BB) had six sites; some were weaker in bothgenotypes. Triploid lines showed six to nine major sites of5S rDNA of widely varying intensity and near the limit of detection.The diploid hybrids had five to nine sites of 5S rDNA whilethe tetraploid hybrid had 11 sites. The telomeric sequence wasdetected as pairs of dots at the ends of all the chromosomesanalysed but no intercalary sequences were seen. Abstract. 1. The effects of prey density and temperature on the feeding and development rates of several late instars of the larvae of three common European damselflies ( Lestes sponsa (Hansemann), Coenagrion puella (L.) and Ischnura elegans van der Linden) were investigated in a laboratory experiment.
2. Functional responses were used to estimate maximum feeding rates. Maximum feeding rates were compared between species, instars and temperatures by expressing prey consumption in terms of prey biomass consumed per unit predator biomass. Lestes was capable of feeding at almost twice the rate of either Coenagrion or Ischnura.
3. Higher feeding rates led to faster development rates and there was an interaction between species and temperature. With the exception of those with very low feeding rates, larvae maintained at higher temperatures, but similar feeding rates, developed faster. Under similar conditions of temperature and feeding rate, Lestes larvae developed faster than larvae of either Coenagrion or Ischnura.
4. Faster development rates at similar rates of food intake were achieved at the cost of reduced size-increases between instars.
5. The differences in the responses of the three species are discussed in the light of their respective life histories, and with reference to a recent model of population regulation in damselflies.  相似文献
