A study of the effects of photic stimulation on the abilityto induce flash luminescence in the female Photuris fireflyby electrical brain stimulation was made. Pulses of light deliveredto the eye of the firefly aie not only able to inhibit spontaneousflashing but also reduce the ability of electrical biain stimulito induce firefly flashes. Inhibition by photic pulses is mosteffective when the pulses are delivered approximately 300–400msec prior to brain stimulation. Only flashes of biain stimulus—flashonset latency greater than 120 msec can be inhibited in thisfashion, while driven flashes of 90 msec were immune from theinhibitory effect. It is suggested that the inhibilory effectsof photic stimulation provide some physiological explaintionof the male-female response latency found in the courting fireflies.  相似文献

Abstract: We studied the dusky flycatcher (Empidonax oberholseri) at 8 sites in central Idaho, USA, in 2002 and 2003 to examine relationships among vegetation cover, density of breeding conspecifics, and indicators of habitat quality. Number of breeding territories and number of fledglings per hectare were positively associated, suggesting that the dusky flycatcher experienced increased reproductive success where it bred at the highest densities. However, the relationships between nesting success, annual reproductive success, number of fledglings per hectare, and amount of understory cover showed substantial annual variation. Nesting success did not differ significantly across sites or between years. Both reproductive success, expressed as young produced per hectare (range: 0.34–3.09 in 2002 and 0.79–3.82 in 2003) and young produced per nesting attempt (range: 0.71–2.78 in 2002 and 1.11–3.10 in 2003), differed across study sites in each year. Mean clutch size did not differ significantly among sites or years. Mean egg weight showed significant variation across some sites within years and was associated negatively with the 3 measures of reproductive success in 2002, although small sample sizes prevented reliable inference about the appropriateness of this measure as an indicator of habitat quality. Mean clutch size and mean egg weight were not associated with vegetation cover variables. Thus, dusky flycatcher reproductive success showed inconsistencies with individual vegetation measurements at the site scale. Forest managers who use vegetation treatments to increase amounts of understory shrub cover (e.g., by removing portions of the overstory conifer canopy) should increase densities of this species and, in turn, increase number of fledglings produced, but these responses appear to be better measured at the territory or nest scales than at the stand or site scales.  相似文献

A phylogenetic analysis of nearly all genera of the Hypostominae and the Ancistrinae is provided based on osteology, external anatomy, and digestive tract anatomy. The results suggest that the Hypostominae is a paraphyletic assemblage. Delturus and Upsilodus form a monophyletic group sister to all other loricariids. Hemipsilichthys , Isbrueckerichthys , Kronichthys , and Pareiorhina form a monophyletic group with Neoplecostomus and the Hypoptopomatinae and are transferred to the Neoplecostominae. The remainder of the Hypostominae is made paraphyletic by the continuing recognition of the Ancistrinae. Ancistrinae is returned to the Hypostominae and recognized as a tribe, Ancistrini. In addition, four new tribes (Corymbophanini, Hypostomini, Pterygoplichthini, and Rhinelepini) are described. Hypostomus is also paraphyletic, the bulk of it forming a monophyletic clade with Aphanotorulus , Cochliodon , and Isorineloricaria . All of the potential monophyletic groups within Hypostomus grade into one another; therefore, Aphanotorulus , Cochliodon , and Isorineloricaria are placed in the synonymy of Hypostomus . Pterygoplichthys and Glyptoperichthys are also polyphyletic, and Liposarcus and Glyptoperichthys are recognized as synonyms of Pterygoplichthys . Sister to Pterygoplichthys is the Hemiancistrus annectens group (including Hypostomus panamensis ) which represents an undescribed genus. ABSTRACT Recently, a number of papers have addressed the use of pedigrees in the study of wild populations, highlighting the value of pedigrees in conservation management. We used pedigrees to study the horses (Equus caballus) of Assateague Island National Seashore, Maryland, USA, one of a small number of free-ranging animal populations that have been the subject of long-term studies. This population grew from 28 in 1968 to 175 in 2001, causing negative impacts on the island ecosystem. To minimize these effects, an immunocontraception program was instituted, and horse numbers are slowly decreasing. However, there is concern that this program may negatively affect the genetic health of the herd. We found that although mitochondrial DNA diversity is low, nuclear diversity is comparable to that of established breeds. Using genetic data, we verified and amended maternal pedigrees that had been primarily based on behavioral data and inferred paternity using genetic data along with National Park Service records of the historic ranges of males. The resulting pedigrees enabled us to examine demography, founder contributions, rates of inbreeding and loss of diversity over recent generations, as well as the level of kinship among horses. We then evaluated the strategy of removing individuals (using nonlethal means) with the highest mean kinship values. Although the removal strategy increased the retained diversity of founders and decreased average kinship between individuals, it disproportionately impacted sizes of the youngest age classes. Our results suggest that a combined strategy of controlled breeding and immunocontraception would be more effective than removing individuals with high mean kinships in preserving the long-term health and viability of the herd.  相似文献

Abstract. A formulated protein meal developed by Kogan (1990) for adult female Aedes aegypti mosquitoes was evaluated and modified to increase egg and pupal yield. A vigorous laboratory colony was maintained with the females fed exclusively on this dietary formula for about twenty-five generations over more than 2 years. Extra modifications were made to produce a diet suitable for Anopheles arabiensis and Anopheles stephensi females to produce eggs. Both formulations contain bovine albumin, haemoglobin and globulin in a ringer based solution, plus ATP as a phagostimulant for Ae.aegypti. Compared to Kogan's original, our Aedes formula doubled the production of pupae per female after a single meal, although the yield was still significantly lower than from mosquitoes fed on animal hosts or defibrinated pig blood. In varying the proportions of different constituents during attempts to optimize the formula, no relationship was found between total protein content (within the range 80–220 mg/ml) and fecundity, percentage hatch or pupal yield of Ae.aegypti. Equivocal results were found when an isoleucine supplement was added to the formula.  相似文献

Abstract.  The flash communication system of Photinus carolinus in Great Smoky Mountain National Park (Tennessee) is characterized by male firefly synchrony. Photinus carolinus males signal a conspecific female with synchronic trains of flashes. A solitary responding female attracts several males, which is not common in North American rover fireflies. The female and the group of males that she attracts are called a cluster. It is hypothesized that the first male attracted to the female would land closer to the female than would additional males because there would be less tendency for visual confusion. This hypothesis is explored under controlled conditions by replacing the responsive female with an appropriately flashing light-emitting diode (LED) located in the center of a flat target area. When infra-red videography is used to measure the first male and the additional males' landing distances from the counterfeit female (LED), most fireflies land within 15 cm of the target LED, and the first male does not land closer than the additional males. It is suggested that cluster formation is a by-product of male synchrony and is facilitated by the tendency of males to land near, but not on, females.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. The courtship signal of the male firefly, Photuris lucicrescens Barber (Coleoptera, Lampyridae), is a brilliant crescendo flash which grows in intensity, reaches a peak and abruptly terminates. It was found to be triggered by a long neural burst from the brain. Males and females produce weak, twinkling flashes which induce male crescendo flashes. Female responses were triggered by a slowly rising intensity, and female response latency is therefore variable. Male and female P.lucicrescens fireflies produce two different types of flashes and both these flashes play an integral part in their courtship communication.  相似文献
