Abstract.  1. Factors affecting the nutritional ecology of mixed-feeding, polyphagous herbivores are poorly understood. Mixed-feeding herbivores do better when they consume both forb and grass species although they typically feed primarily on forbs, which are of relatively higher protein content than grasses.
2. In a field experiment, we examined the effects of nitrogen and phosphorus fertilization and associated changes in host-plant C:N:P on proportional grass consumption by a mixed-feeding insect herbivore, Melanoplus bivittatus , using natural abundance stable carbon isotope (12C/13C) methods. We also examined a grass-feeding ( Phoetaliotes nebrascensis ) and forb-feeding ( Hesperotettix viridis ) species.
3. The C isotope signatures of M. bivittatus collected from plots fertilized with nitrogen (+N), phosphorus (+P), nitrogen and phosphorus (+N+P) and no fertilizer were compared with the C isotope signatures of plants in those plots to determine the proportion of assimilated C derived from C4 grasses and C3 forbs in each plot. We also examined the relationship between M. bivittatus diets and plant C:N:P stoichiometry.
4. The proportion of grass assimilated approximately doubled in N-fertilized treatments (39.1 ± 0.1%) compared with non-fertilized treatments (19 ± <0.1%), an increase associated with decreased C:N and increased N:P of grasses.
5. These results indicate that mixed-feeding M. bivittatus can selectively feed to balance C:N:P intake even when choosing between two structurally and chemically different groups of plants.
6. The strong relationship between diet selection and grass stoichiometry also suggests that plant nutrient composition may be more important than defensive chemistry in food choice.  相似文献

1. Food quality has major effects on the transfer of energy and matter in food webs, and essential long‐chained polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) can affect the quality of phytoplankton as food. In a study of oligotrophic lakes in north‐western Sweden, we investigated the fatty acid composition of four planktonic cladocerans and two calanoid copepods, representing herbivorous and carnivorous species. We also collected seston samples. 2. The proportions of long‐chain PUFAs in the organisms increased with their increasing trophic position. Thus, both their quality as food for other organisms, as well as their requirement for fatty acids (FAs), differed among taxa and depended on their trophic position. 3. We found taxon‐specific differences in the FA composition of zooplankton that were not related to sestonic FA composition. This implies that the variation in zooplankton FA composition is constrained by phylogenetic origin, life history characteristics, or both. 4. The cladoceran taxa contained 12–23% eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) but only 0.9–2.1% docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) of the total FA content. In contrast, the calanoid copepods contained 7–11% EPA and 14–21% DHA. Thus, our results show that differences in the PUFA content among zooplankton species could have repercussions for both food web structure and function.  相似文献

The peculiar habitus of Amphipods with lateral compression, deep coxal plates 1-4, broad bases of peraeopods 5-7, and enlarged pleura (epimeral plates) of abdominal segments 1-3 is seen as a functional system closely dependent upon the currents produced by the incessant beating of the pleopods. The derivation and position of branchiae and oostegites is discussed. The morphology of more or less aberrant groups, including the suborders Caprellidea and Ingolfiellidea, and its correlations with the mode of life and the basic functional model is analyzed. The possible bearing of the functional model system upon the position of the Amphipoda among the Peracarida is briefly dealt with.  相似文献

Several cultures established from biopsies of apparently normal adult human glial material showed no cells positive for glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFA) when examined after seven or more cumulative population doublings (CPD), although the established glioma line U251 MG showed ∼3% GFA-positive cells, and U333 CG/343 MG clone 3 showed >98% GFA-positive cells. Both the human glia derived cultures and the glioma lines were positive when assayed with sera specific for vimentin. We therefore investigated the expression of GFA as a function of cumulative population doublings after the establishment of primary cultures. Under our experimental conditions, although GFA-positive cells were clearly present in the primary cultures accounting for some 3%–14% of the cells present, the GFA marker was subsequently lost, and the proliferating cultures expressed only the vimentin type of intermediate filament. Those cells that were GFA-positive also appeared to be vimentin-positive. GFA expression was not reinduced in cultures that had lost the GFA marker by treatment with dibutyryl cyclic AMP. We discuss two alternate hypotheses for the origin of the GFA-negative cells: (1) the cultures are of astrocyte origin but lose the ability to express GFA on culturing; (2) the cultures originate from cells of nonastrocyte origin present in the primary material.  相似文献

The production of volatile compounds by Dipodascus aggregatus was studied in relation to the oxygen concentration in the medium. Oxygen concentration was determined with a Clark oxygen electrode and volatile compounds in the atmosphere above the culture by a gas chromatographic technique. Shake cultures of the fungus in its stationary phase of growth were very sensitive to a decrease in oxygen concentration in the presence of residual glucose. Anaerobic conditions induced production of volatile compounds that continued for many hours. The pattern of production of volatile compounds observed under conditions of low oxygen concentration during the stationary phase of growth differed from that obtained under aerobic conditions during the exponential phase of growth.  相似文献

Global climate change impacts can already be tracked in many physical and biological systems; in particular, terrestrial ecosystems provide a consistent picture of observed changes. One of the preferred indicators is phenology, the science of natural recurring events, as their recorded dates provide a high-temporal resolution of ongoing changes. Thus, numerous analyses have demonstrated an earlier onset of spring events for mid and higher latitudes and a lengthening of the growing season. However, published single-site or single-species studies are particularly open to suspicion of being biased towards predominantly reporting climate change-induced impacts. No comprehensive study or meta-analysis has so far examined the possible lack of evidence for changes or shifts at sites where no temperature change is observed. We used an enormous systematic phenological network data set of more than 125 000 observational series of 542 plant and 19 animal species in 21 European countries (1971–2000). Our results showed that 78% of all leafing, flowering and fruiting records advanced (30% significantly) and only 3% were significantly delayed, whereas the signal of leaf colouring/fall is ambiguous. We conclude that previously published results of phenological changes were not biased by reporting or publication predisposition: the average advance of spring/summer was 2.5 days decade−1 in Europe. Our analysis of 254 mean national time series undoubtedly demonstrates that species' phenology is responsive to temperature of the preceding months (mean advance of spring/summer by 2.5 days°C−1, delay of leaf colouring and fall by 1.0 day°C−1). The pattern of observed change in spring efficiently matches measured national warming across 19 European countries (correlation coefficient r =−0.69, P <0.001).  相似文献

Recent investigations of mate choice indicate that the genetic effect of sires on offspring fitness may depend on the interaction between maternal and paternal genotypes and the environmental conditions experienced by the offspring. Alternative colour morphs of the pygmy grasshopper, Tetrix subulata , represent ecological strategies that differ in body size, life history, thermoregulatory behaviour, and habitat selection. The hypothesis that selection promotes behaviours maintaining coadapted gene complexes predicts individuals to mate assortatively with respect to colour morph. On the other hand, the bet-hedging hypothesis predicts that the temporal variability of the environment inhabited by these animals may select for disassortative mating behaviour resulting in heterogeneous offspring. To distinguish between these competing hypotheses, we investigated mating behaviours using dual-choice experiments. Our results were not in agreement with the prediction of assortative mating but suggest instead that matings were random with regard to colour morph. Polyandry was common, and females mated with the second male regardless of whether the first mating was assortative or disassortative. Polyandry also was equally frequent among females in triads in which the two males belonged to different colour morphs as in triads where both males belonged to the same colour morph. A field experiment confirmed that polyandry occurred also among free-ranging individuals, and uncovered variation in mating success among male colour morphs, probably due to indirect effects of coloration on activity or habitat use. The excretory and osmoregulatory system of Halobiotus crispae consists of two lateral and one smaller dorsal Malpighian tubules, which empty into the digestive tract in the transition zone of the midgut and rectum. The tubules are identical at the ultrastructural level, and consist of an initial segment with three large cells, a thin transitional distal part lacking a nucleus, and a proximal part with 9–12 nuclei. The initial segment possesses deep basal infoldings and interdigitating, finger-shaped processes of the plasma membrane, large mitochondria and giant nuclei. The distal part is a short section which supports the initial segment. Cellular offshoots from the succeeding proximal part constitute the distal part. The distal and proximal parts contain intercellular canals with concretions of variable size. The exit of the proximal part into the digestive tract is characterized by the presence of microvilli. Correlated with the different stages in the cyclomorphosis of H. crispae , we observed size variation of the Malpighian tubules; thus, pseudosimplex stages have the largest tubules. We present suggestions concerning the physiology of the tubules and compare the Malpighian tubules of Tardigrada with the Malpighian papillae of Protura.  相似文献
