Second-generation, dedicated lignocellulosic crops for bioenergy are being hailed as the sustainable alternative to food crops for the generation of liquid transport fuels, contributing to climate change mitigation and increased energy security. Across temperate regions they include tree species grown as short rotation coppice and intensive forestry (e.g. Populus and Salix species) and C4 grasses such as miscanthus and switchgrass. For bioenergy crops it is paramount that high energy yields are maintained in order to drive the industry to an economic threshold where it has competitive advantage over conventional fossil fuel alternatives. Therefore, in the face of increased planting of these species, globally, there is a pressing need for insight into their responses to predicted changes in climate to ensure these crops are 'climate proofed' in breeding and improvement programmes. In this review, we investigate the physiological responses of bioenergy crops to rising atmospheric CO2 ([Ca]) and drought, with particular emphasis on the C3 Salicaceae trees and C4 grasses. We show that while crop yield is predicted to rise by up to 40% in elevated [Ca], this is tempered by the effects of water deficit. In response to elevated [Ca] stomatal conductance and evapotranspiration decline and higher leaf–water potentials are observed. However, whole-plant responses to [Ca] are often of lower magnitude and may even be positive (increased water use in elevated [Ca]). We conclude that rising [Ca] is likely to improve drought tolerance of bioenergy crop species due to improved plant water use, consequently yields in temperate environments may remain high in future climate scenarios.  相似文献

Phylogeographical studies are typically based on haplotype data, occasionally on nuclear markers such as microsatellites, but rarely combine both. This is unfortunate because the use of markers with contrasting modes of inheritance and rates of evolution might provide a more accurate and comprehensive understanding of a species' history. Here we present a detailed study of the phylogeography of the greater horseshoe bat, Rhinolophus ferrumequinum , using 1098 bp of the mitochondrial ND2 gene from 45 localities from across its Palaearctic range to infer population history. In addition, we re-analysed a large microsatellite data set available for this species and compared the results of both markers to infer population relationships and the historical processes influencing them. We show that mtDNA, the most popular marker in phylogeography studies, yielded a misleading result, and would have led us to conclude erroneously that a single expansion had taken place in Europe. Only by combining the mitochondrial and microsatellite data sets are we able to reconstruct the species' history and show two colonization events in Europe, one before the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) and one after it. Combining markers also revealed the importance of Asia Minor as an ancient refugium for this species and a source population for the expansion of the greater horseshoe bat into Europe before the LGM.  相似文献

Winifred's Warbler Scepomycter winifredae has a disjunct but very restricted distribution in the mountains of central Tanzania. It was once known only from the Uluguru Mountains. Subsequently, this rare warbler has been recorded from the Ukaguru Mountains, and more recently from the Rubeho Mountains, as well as from Mwanihana Forest on the eastern scarp of the Udzungwa Highlands (single record). These three localities are isolated from the Uluguru Mountains by more than 100 km of lowland savannah. Here we characterize the populations morphologically and estimate demographic parameters using a multilocus molecular approach. Birds from the Uluguru Mountains differed from those of the Rubeho–Ukaguru Mountains in mtDNA by 1.6% (uncorrected) sequence divergence, or at 16 sites: one at each of the first and second codon positions, and at 14 third codon position sites. Five autosomal introns were also sequenced for a total of 2922 bp of nuclear DNA. No single nucleotide polymorphisms were completely fixed between the Uluguru and Rubeho–Ukaguru populations. Results from our coalescent analyses suggest that there is currently unlikely to be any exchange of birds between the Uluguru and Rubeho–Ukaguru populations and that the shared nuclear alleles are a consequence of lineage sorting not yet having been completed due to the recent divergence (upper Pleistocene) between these two populations. In view of the lack of gene flow between the Uluguru and Rubeho–Ukaguru populations, and morphological diagnosability, we propose to recognize the latter populations as a separate species, which we name Rubeho Warbler Scepomycter rubehoensis .  相似文献

The influence of Pleistocene climatic oscillations on shaping the genetic structure of Asian biota is poorly known. The Japanese pipistrelle bat occurs over a wide range in eastern Asia, from Siberia to Japan. To test the relative impact of ancient and more recent events on genetic structure in this species, we combined mitochondrial (cytochrome b) and microsatellite markers to reconstruct its phylogeographic and demographic history on continental China and its offshore islands, Hainan Island and the Zhoushan Archipelago. Our mitochondrial DNA tree recovered two divergent geographical clades, indicating multiple glacial refugia in the region. The first clade was mainly confined to Hainan Island, indicating that gene flow between this population and the continent has been restricted, despite being repeatedly connected to the mainland during repeated glacial episodes. By contrast, haplotypes sampled on the Zhoushan Archipelago were mixed with those from the mainland, suggesting a recent shared history of expansion. Although microsatellite allele frequencies showed clear discontinuities across the sampling range, supporting the current isolation of both Hainan Island and the Zhoushan Archipelago, we also found clear evidence of more recent back colonization, probably via post‐glacial expansion or, in the latter case, occasional long distance dispersal. Multiannual cycles in the abundance of voles and other animals have been collapsing in the last decades. It has been proposed that this phenomenon is ‘climatically forced’ by milder winters. We here consider the dynamics of bank and field voles during more than two decades in two localities (170 km apart) in southern Finland. Using wavelet analysis, we show that a clear 3‐year cycle disappeared in the mid 1990s. However, the vole cycle returned in both localities after about 5 years despite winters becoming increasingly milder. In both localities, vole cycles were mainly determined by bank voles after the period of noncyclic dynamics, whereas field voles were dominant before this irregularity. Wavelet coherency analysis shows that spatial synchrony temporarily broke down during the period of noncyclic dynamics, but was fully restored afterwards. The return of the cycle despite ongoing rapid climate change argues against ‘climatic forcing’ as a general explanation for loss of cycles. Rather, the population‐dynamical consequences of climate change may be dependent on the local species composition and mechanism of delayed density dependence.  相似文献

We isolated 18 polymorphic microsatellite loci to be used for pedigree analysis in a wild population of North American red squirrels, Tamiasciurus hudsonicus. Allelic diversity and observed heterozygosity ranged from six to 13 and 0.39 to 0.89, respectively, in a sample of 93 individuals. Barriers to the recovery of aquatic insect communities in urban streams   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
1. Worldwide, increasing numbers of stream restoration projects are being initiated to rehabilitate waterways modified by urbanisation. However, many of these projects have limited success in restoring stream communities. Prompted by this, we investigated previously unrecognised barriers to aquatic insect colonisation in urban streams. 2. To investigate whether the availability of suitable substrata for oviposition limited the longitudinal distribution of caddisflies, large boulders were added to the upstream reaches of one stream. Prior to the addition, more egg masses were observed downstream and this longitudinal pattern persisted subsequently. 3. Malaise trapping revealed that adult caddisfly diversity and abundance was greater downstream than upstream. Furthermore, in a previous study the authors found larval caddisflies reflected the longitudinal distribution of adults. 4. The only obvious potential obstructions between reaches were roads beneath which the stream flowed through culverted crossings. Malaise trapping was used to examine the effect of road culverts and bridges on caddisfly dispersal. Numbers of caddisflies caught declined upstream and about 2.5 × more individuals were taken in traps immediately below than above five culverts. 4. Bridges, which had a more open structure than culverts, had no significant effect on the size of catches made above and below them. 5. Road culverts could act as partial barriers to upstream flight, with consequences for larval recruitment in urban streams. We recommend that urban planners and designers of restoration projects consider possible synergistic effects of poor oviposition habitat and barriers to aquatic insect dispersal, which may be critical for the colonisation of urban headwater streams and for the maintenance of stream insect populations.  相似文献

The endangered Uluguru Bush Shrike Malaconotus alius is a large, black-headed bush shrike, strictly endemic to the Uluguru Mountains in Tanzania. It has recently been suggested that this species has been misplaced within the genus Malaconotus and might instead be related to Malagasy Vangidae. To assess its systematic affinities, we analysed 1518 bp of sequence data obtained from a nuclear intron (myoglobin intron-2) and a mitochondrial protein-coding gene (ND2) using parsimony, maximum likelihood and Bayesian inference. Both genes strongly support the traditional placement within the genus Malaconotus , suggesting that similarities between the Uluguru Bush Shrike and the Vangidae are due to convergence. These results caution that taxonomic changes should not be made without a proper character analysis (i.e. assignment of character homology).  相似文献
