The study determined the 6-n-propylthiouracil (PROP) status of Filipino adults and how it relates to their body mass indices (BMI) and food preferences. Self-reported food preference checklists were administered to 100 male and female adults aged 18–60, classified according to BMI. Increasing concentrations of PROP and NaCl solutions were rated in labeled magnitude scale to establish the PROP taster status of the selected respondents. The Filipino adult respondents were composed of 12% nontasters, 45% medium tasters and 43% supertasters. No association ( P >  0.05) between BMI and PROP taster status was found. Sweet-tasting foods were the most preferred and bitter-tasting foods were the least preferred within each taster status. Furthermore, medium tasters and supertasters had the highest acceptance for meats, fish and poultry, and least acceptance for beverages, which were mostly bitter. Decreased preferences for fats and oils, sugars and confectionery, and beverages were correlated ( P <  0.05) with responsiveness to PROP.

PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS


The research provides a general baseline data of the PROP taster status of Filipino adults. The findings from this study can be used as a reference and can be compared to similar studies conducted in other countries. Likewise, the information from the study can add to the scarce data for taste genetics specifically for the Asian population. The relationship of PROP taster status with body mass index and food preferences can be a guide in the design of products and dietary plans. Likewise, the study would be a means to understand why people vary in liking for particular food items and how these can be reflected in their food consumption and nutritional status.  相似文献

1. Manipulative experiments were carried out in four Hong Kong streams (two shaded, two unshaded) to investigate the impact of grazing by an algivorous fish, Pseudogastromyzon myersi, on benthic algal biomass and assemblage composition. Experiments were conducted and repeated during both the dry and wet seasons to determine whether spate‐induced disturbance modified any grazing effect. Treatments comprised fish exclusion and inclusion via closed and open cages, with a no‐cage treatment used as a control for the cage effect. Treatments were maintained for 4 weeks in each experimental run. 2. Grazing by P. myersi reduced benthic algal biomass and the organic matter content of periphyton in open cages and the no‐cage treatment relative to closed cages. The similarity between open‐cage and no‐cage treatments was evidence that the overall difference among treatments was caused by limiting fish access to closed cages and not merely an artifact of caging. Grazing effects were broadly similar in all streams, but there was a significant statistical interaction between treatments and seasons. 3. Analysis of dry‐season data matched the overall trend in inter‐treatment differences, confirming the effects of grazing by P. myersi on algal biomass and periphyton organic matter. Significant differences in algal assemblage composition between closed‐cage and no‐cage treatments during the dry season reflected reductions in the abundance of erect, stalked diatoms (Gomphonema) and filamentous cyanobacteria (Homeothrix). Removal of these vulnerable overstorey algae by P. myersi resulted in greater abundance of understorey diatoms (Achnanthes and Cocconeis) in the no‐cage treatment in all streams during the dry season. The composition of algal assemblages in open cages was intermediate between the other two treatments. 4. Although fish densities were greater in all streams during the wet season, spate‐induced disturbance obscured grazing effects and there were no significant differences among treatments attributable to fish grazing. Seasonal variation in impacts of P. myersi grazing provides support for the harsh‐benign hypothesis, and confirms that biotic factors are less important controls of stream algal biomass and assemblage structure during periods (i.e. the wet season in Hong Kong) when abiotic disturbances are frequent or intense.  相似文献

1. Urbanisation and landuse changes threaten the ecological integrity of rivers and streams globally. A major challenge in such impacted environments is to develop functional indicators for use by waterway managers. We first reviewed cellulose decomposition potential (CDP) as one such indicator, and here present current understanding and highlight the knowledge gaps which hinder its widespread incorporation into programmes monitoring stream health. In a field study, we also evaluated two differing cellulose materials (Shirley soil burial test material and unbleached calico) and measurement techniques. 2. We also investigated the effects of urbanisation and riparian cover on CDP as a standardised indicator of ecosystem function. Cotton fabrics were deployed in paired open and closed reaches across six stream catchments varying in degree of urbanisation (in south‐eastern Australia). After 7, 14 and 21 days materials were retrieved and their decomposition assessed in conjunction with a number of physicochemical variables. 3. We observed a strong positive relationship between the decomposition of Shirley and calico materials, thus indicating unbleached calico is an effective substitute for Shirley test cloth, which is no longer available. 4. Across sites, CDP was positively correlated with ammonium concentrations and also, to a lesser extent, with filterable reactive phosphorus and sediment silt and clay content/carbon availability. Despite these relationships, cellulose decomposition was not correlated with urbanisation or riparian cover. 5. Cellulose decomposition is a simple, rapid and sensitive functional indicator of water quality and associated anthropogenic landuse changes and is thus a valuable tool for monitoring stream health.  相似文献

Transpiration of Festuca arundinacea Schreb, strain S170, wasmeasured at two different wind speeds in a controlled-environmentwind tunnel. As a result of a wind increase from 1 m s–1to 3.5 m s–1 above the sward, transpiration graduallyincreased, especially at night-time. Similar effects were notedin three other grass species. Abstract. After a period of one week at 11m s−1 in a wind tunnel, the leaf surface of Picea sitchensis and Pinus sylvestris had undergone structural modification. Low-temperature scanning electron microscopy was used to examine these changes. Picea showed flattening and smearing of wax crystals, as well as cracks in some of the wax structures filling the stomatal antechambers. In Pinus , most damage was on the cells surrounding the stomatal antechamber or on needle ridges. Artificially abraded surfaces were of similar appearance. Minimum epidermal conductance to water vapour ( g eMIN) was determined gravimetrically. In Picea g cMIN was more than doubled by wind treatment and increased eightfold by rubbing. Similar but less extreme increases occurred in Pinus. Neither species showed recovery of g eMIN after 1 week at low windspeed.  相似文献

1. Balitorid loaches are widespread and highly diverse in Asian streams, yet their life history and ecology have received little attention. We investigated seasonal (wet versus dry season) and spatial variation in populations of algivorous Pseudogastromyzon myersi in Hong Kong, and estimated the magnitude of secondary production by this fish in pools in four streams (two shaded and two unshaded) over a 15‐month period. 2. Mean population densities of P. myersi ranged from 6.0 to 23.2 individuals m−2, constituting more than half (and typically >70%) of benthic fishes censused. Abundance was c. 25% greater in the wet season, when recruitment occurred. Significant density differences among streams were not related to shading conditions and were evident despite small‐scale variations in P. myersi abundance among pools. Mean biomass varied among streams from 0.85 to 3.87 g ash‐free dry weight (AFDW) m−2. Spatial and seasonal patterns in biomass and density were similar, apart from some minor disparities attributable to differences in mean body size among populations. 3. All four P. myersi populations bred once a year in June and July, and life spans varied from 24 to 26 months. Populations consisted of three cohorts immediately after recruitment but, for most of the study period, only two cohorts were evident. Cohort‐specific growth rates did not differ significantly among streams but, in all streams, younger cohorts had higher cohort‐specific growth rates. 4. Secondary production of P. myersi estimated by the size‐frequency (SF) method was 2.7–11.5 g AFDW m−2 year−1 and almost twice that calculated by the increment‐summation (IS) method (1.2–6.6 g AFDW m−2 year−1). Annual P/B ratios were 1.17 – 2.16 year−1 (IS) and 2.73 – 3.22 year−1 (SF). Highest production was recorded in an unshaded stream and the lowest in a shaded stream, but site rankings by production did not otherwise match shading conditions. Wet‐season production was six times greater than dry‐season production, and daily production fell to almost zero during January and February. Cool temperatures (<17 °C) may have limited fish activity and influenced detectability during some dry‐season censuses. Estimates of abundance and annual production by P. myersi are therefore conservative. 5. Comparisons with the literature indicate that the abundance and production of P. myersi in Hong Kong was high relative to other benthic fishes in tropical Asia, or their temperate counterparts in small streams. Manipulative experiments are needed to determine the influence of P. myersi, and algivorous balitorids in general, on periphyton dynamics and energy flow in Asian streams.  相似文献

Leaf surfaces of the native Heracleum sphondyliutn , the alien Heracleum mantegazzianum and the interspecific hybrid were examined using SEM and light microscopy. The surfaces differed in hairiness, especially in the length of the hairs, although the hairs did not differ in general form, or distribution on the leaf surface. Stomata differed little in length, width or frequency, but there were differences in the sort of stomata in relation to the surrounding epidermal cells. The hybrid material was intermediate between the parental species, and sometimes displayed aberrant trichomes that were contorted in contiguous pairs.
The results are discussed in relation to other work on the epidermal features of the Umbelliferae: as a means of discriminating the three taxa, and in relation to the ecological distributions of the species.  相似文献

Xylem cavitation is a frequent event, but since resistance to flow does not generally increase in vivo, reversal must also occur even under negative potentials. We demonstrated that this can occur in excised wood. Our results suggest that refilling of cavitated tracheids at negative water potentials may result from a change in equilibrium between gas concentrations, water potential and surface tension at the embolism interface. Excised branch-wood specimens from small trees of Pinus sylvestris were dried on the bench to a range of relative water contents and then rehydrated in a permeability apparatus using ultra-filtered, de-aerated water as permeant. Water inflow and outflow were measured gravimetrically by recording the gain or loss from two reservoirs held on balances. Flow was induced through the specimen by holding the balances at different levels, while an overall negative water potential could be imposed by raising the specimen above the inflow/outflow reservoirs. Changes in water content of the specimen were calculated as the difference between inflow and outflow. The time-course data for both relative water content and permeability were fitted to an exponential function to give initial and final estimates and a time constant. Rehydration occurred at all imposed water potentials, but the speed of recovery was affected at lower potentials. Where drying of the specimen was more protracted, permeability was initially lower but also recovered during permeation. Both flow and de-aeration were necessary for complete rehydration. A model requiring new information on gas concentrations and transport coefficients is suggested.  相似文献
