Abstract Groups of apple trees within an orchard were irrigated by either releasing a fine mist within the canopy or spraying water on the soil. Diurnal changes in the water content of the xylem were inferred from measurements of density made with a gamma probe. Transpiration rates were estimated from leaf temperatures, and water potentials and changes in radial dimension of the stem were recorded. Xylem water content and water potential declined each morning and recovered in the afternoon. Radial dimensions of the xylem followed a similar pattern, but the percentage change was very small in relation to the change in water content of the same tissue. The decline in water content is unlikely to have been caused by cavitation, as it was readily reversed in the afternoon. It is more likely to have been caused by changes in the volume of water occupying already-cavitated fibres or intercellular spaces. Water potential and xylem water content were highest in the mist-irrigated trees and least in the unirrigated controls.  相似文献

Abstract Leaf surfaces of Festuca arundinacea Schreb. were subjected to controlled polishing and abrasion on a test-bed designed to simulate components of abrasive wind damage. Both treatments substantially increased the leaf surface conductance, particularly the polishing treatment. Scanning electron micrographs of cryo-fixed leaf surfaces showed displacement and smoothing of the epicuticular waxes, damage to the cuticle, collapse of epidermal cells and fracture of trichomes. The importance of the epicuticular waxes in determining leaf diffusivity and permeability is discussed.  相似文献

The extension growth of Festuca arundinacea was reduced by shaking,and the leaves formed during shaking were thinner and narrowerthan the controls. The response to shaking was modified by thenutritional status of the plant — shaken plants took upmore phosphorus from a phosphorus deficient soil than the controlsand this advantage seemed to offset the influence of shaking. Shaken plants displayed a higher stomatal conductance and alower water potential than the controls, though it was consideredthat the effect of shaking could not be attributed entirelyto differences in water potential. Abscisic acid concentrations and fluxes in droughted conifer saplings   总被引:7,自引:1,他引:6  
We present the first study of abscisic acid (ABA) concentrations and fluxes in the xylem sap of conifers during a drought cycle. In both Pinus sylvestris and Picea sitchensis the concentration of ABA in the sap rose 11-fold as the drought progressed. There were clear diurnal trends in this concentration, which reached its maximum (6–8.ininol ABA m?3) near the middle of the day. The fluxes of ABA were calculated by multiplying the xylem ABA concentration by the sap flow rate. The ABA fluxes in the droughted plants in the middle of the day were usually no higher than those of the controls, as a result of the very low sap flow in the droughted plants at that time. However, the ABA flux in the droughted plants was higher than in the controls in the morning, and we postulate that the stomata are responding to these ‘morning doses’ Stomatal conductance, gs, could not be related statistically to leaf turgor or to the ABA flux. However, £s did display a negative exponential relationship with ABA concentration in the xylem. Pinus displayed more acclimation to drought than Picea, Its ABA concentration rose and its stomatal conductance fell at day 6 of the drought, as opposed to day 17 for Picea, and its osmotic potential fell during the drought treatment.  相似文献

Sycamore seedlings were grown with their root systems dividedequally between two containers. Water was withheld from onecontainer while the other container was kept well-watered. Effectsof soil drying on stomatal behaviour, shoot water status, andabscisic acid (ABA) concentration in roots, xylem sap and leaveswere evaluated. At 3 d, root ABA in the drying container increased significantly,while the root ABA in the unstressed container of the same plantsdid not differ from that of the control. The increase in rootABA was associated with the increase in xylem sap ABA and withthe decrease in stomatal conductance without any significantperturbation in shoot water status. At 7 d, despite the continuous increase in root ABA concentration,xylem sap ABA showed a marked decline when soil water contentwas depleted below 013 g g–1. This reduction in xylemsap ABA coincided with a partial recovery of stomatal conductance.The results indicate that xylem sap ABA is a function of rootABA as well as the flow rate of water from roots to shoots,and that this ABA can be a sensitive indicator to the shootof the effect of soil drying. Acclimation of fully developed leaves of Bischofia javanicaBlume to shadelight was examined. Seedlings were grown undersimulated daylight (1000 µmol m–2 s–1), thentransferred to a simulated shadelight (40 µmol m–2s–1). When a high-light leaf was transferred to low light, large negativenet photosynthetic rates (Pm) were recorded. This decrease wasrapid, but within 7 d the rate increased and became equal tothe low-light control leaf. These changes in photosynthesisdid not follow the pattern of changes in stomatal conductance(gs). Transfer to the low light resulted in a dramatic decreasein leaf weight per unit area (Lw), and most of the decreasesin Lw occurred within 3 d of transfer when the Pm of the transferredleaf was well below that of the low-light control leaf. There was a significant decrease in chlorophyll a in the transferredleaf without an appreciable change in chlorophyll b resultingin a large decrease in the chlorophyll a to chlorophyll b ratio.Leaf chlorophylls per unit area were higher in the transferredleaf than the low-light control leaf. Maximum photosyntheticrate in the transferred leaf was decreased by 40% compared tothat for the high-control leaf, but was almost at the same extenthigher than the low-light control leaf The results are discussedin the context of carbon gain capacity of its seedlings underlight-limiting forest understorey habitats. Early stages of lineage divergence in insect herbivores are often related to shifts in host plant use and divergence in mating capabilities, which may lead to sexual isolation of populations of herbivorous insects. We examined host preferences, degree of differentiation in mate choice, and divergence in cuticular morphology using near‐infrared spectroscopy in the grasshopper Hesperotettix viridis aiming to understand lineage divergence. In Kansas (USA), H. viridis is an oligophagous species feeding on Gutierrezia and Solidago host species. To identify incipient mechanisms of lineage divergence and isolation, we compared host choice, mate choice, and phenotypic divergence among natural grasshopper populations in zones of contact with populations encountering only one of the host species. A significant host‐based preference from the two host groups was detected in host‐paired feeding preference studies. No‐choice mate selection experiments revealed a preference for individuals collected from the same host species independent of geographic location, and little mating was observed between individuals collected from different host species. Female mate choice tests between males from the two host species resulted in 100% fidelity with respect to host use. Significant differentiation in colour and cuticular composition of individuals from different host plants was observed, which correlated positively with host choice and mate choice. 1. Urbanisation and landuse changes threaten the ecological integrity of rivers and streams globally. A major challenge in such impacted environments is to develop functional indicators for use by waterway managers. We first reviewed cellulose decomposition potential (CDP) as one such indicator, and here present current understanding and highlight the knowledge gaps which hinder its widespread incorporation into programmes monitoring stream health. In a field study, we also evaluated two differing cellulose materials (Shirley soil burial test material and unbleached calico) and measurement techniques. 2. We also investigated the effects of urbanisation and riparian cover on CDP as a standardised indicator of ecosystem function. Cotton fabrics were deployed in paired open and closed reaches across six stream catchments varying in degree of urbanisation (in south‐eastern Australia). After 7, 14 and 21 days materials were retrieved and their decomposition assessed in conjunction with a number of physicochemical variables. 3. We observed a strong positive relationship between the decomposition of Shirley and calico materials, thus indicating unbleached calico is an effective substitute for Shirley test cloth, which is no longer available. 4. Across sites, CDP was positively correlated with ammonium concentrations and also, to a lesser extent, with filterable reactive phosphorus and sediment silt and clay content/carbon availability. Despite these relationships, cellulose decomposition was not correlated with urbanisation or riparian cover. 5. Cellulose decomposition is a simple, rapid and sensitive functional indicator of water quality and associated anthropogenic landuse changes and is thus a valuable tool for monitoring stream health.  相似文献

1. Manipulative experiments were carried out in four Hong Kong streams (two shaded, two unshaded) to investigate the impact of grazing by an algivorous fish, Pseudogastromyzon myersi, on benthic algal biomass and assemblage composition. Experiments were conducted and repeated during both the dry and wet seasons to determine whether spate‐induced disturbance modified any grazing effect. Treatments comprised fish exclusion and inclusion via closed and open cages, with a no‐cage treatment used as a control for the cage effect. Treatments were maintained for 4 weeks in each experimental run. 2. Grazing by P. myersi reduced benthic algal biomass and the organic matter content of periphyton in open cages and the no‐cage treatment relative to closed cages. The similarity between open‐cage and no‐cage treatments was evidence that the overall difference among treatments was caused by limiting fish access to closed cages and not merely an artifact of caging. Grazing effects were broadly similar in all streams, but there was a significant statistical interaction between treatments and seasons. 3. Analysis of dry‐season data matched the overall trend in inter‐treatment differences, confirming the effects of grazing by P. myersi on algal biomass and periphyton organic matter. Significant differences in algal assemblage composition between closed‐cage and no‐cage treatments during the dry season reflected reductions in the abundance of erect, stalked diatoms (Gomphonema) and filamentous cyanobacteria (Homeothrix). Removal of these vulnerable overstorey algae by P. myersi resulted in greater abundance of understorey diatoms (Achnanthes and Cocconeis) in the no‐cage treatment in all streams during the dry season. The composition of algal assemblages in open cages was intermediate between the other two treatments. 4. Although fish densities were greater in all streams during the wet season, spate‐induced disturbance obscured grazing effects and there were no significant differences among treatments attributable to fish grazing. Seasonal variation in impacts of P. myersi grazing provides support for the harsh‐benign hypothesis, and confirms that biotic factors are less important controls of stream algal biomass and assemblage structure during periods (i.e. the wet season in Hong Kong) when abiotic disturbances are frequent or intense.  相似文献
