PROCESSES OF ORGANIC PRODUCTION ON CORAL REEFS   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
1. The first quantitative studies of production on coral reefs were those of Sargent & Austin who showed that productivity on reefs was considerably higher than in surrounding waters. This high production occurred in spite of nutrient limitation and low productivity of offshore waters. Their conclusions have since been confirmed by numerous other workers in both the Atlantic and the Pacific. 2. Primary production on reefs has been studied by flow respirometry, measuring changes in oxygen or carbon dioxide concentrations in water flowing over reefs. Production of benthic organisms has also been measured in situ by light and dark bottle methods and by radioactive tracer techniques. Production values obtained by the various methods are not identical but their use in combination is to be recommended. 3. Rates of gross primary production on reefs vary between 300–5000 gC/m2/yr. These rates are higher than general oceanic values and as high as those of the most productive marine communities. 4. Sources of primary production include fleshy macrophytes, calcareous algae, filamentous algae on the coral skeletons or calcareous rock, marine grasses and the zooxanthellae within coral tissue. Production values from the various sources fall within the range of production of reefs as a whole. 5. Concentrations of nitrogen and phosphorus in waters flowing over reefs are consistently low. There is evidence to suggest that both these nutrients are recycled rapidly on the reef and that nitrogen is fixed by bacteria and primary producers. 6. In many instances the mass of detritus over coral reefs exceeds the biomass of zooplankton. While the quantitative significance of detritus as food for corals and other benthic organisms has not been evaluated, there is a growing body of evidence to show that this may be the key to understanding secondary production. 7. Opinions differ on the adequacy of zooplankton in satisfying the food requirements of corals and other benthic invertebrates on reefs. The weight of evidence suggests that while there is a removal of zooplankton by benthic organisms, the total biomass carried over the reef is too small to support the energy needs of secondary production. 8. Bacteria are a potential source of energy for secondary production on reefs and are implicated in nitrogen fixation, decomposition and biogeochemical cycling. 9. There is an abundance of sessile invertebrates other than corals on reefs but there are few quantitative data on their importance in secondary production. 10. The biomass of fish on reefs may be very high but the quantitative significance of grazing and predation is not fully established. 11. Studies on the growth of corals themselves have been based on measurements of skeletal accretion. These methods do not lead directly to estimates of reef organic production. Growth rates of corals vary considerably between and within species. 12. Estimates of reef growth have been made from measurements of coral growth and from the flux of calcium carbonate. There is less quantitative information on erosion caused by mechanical damage, by boring organisms and by human pollution. 13. Hydrographic factors influence growth and form of reefs and there is some evidence to show that production is enhanced by conservation of water in lagoonal areas.  相似文献

An analysis of the changing patterns of protein synthesis duringearly development of Lymnaea palustris has been undertaken.An examination of the ingestion of capsule fluid protein suggeststhat after gastrulation 30 to 65% of the total embryo proteinis undigested food protein. Starch gel electrophoresis revealsa sudden increase in the number of hydrolases from four to twenty-siximmediately following the trochophore stage with the latterbeing present also in adult organs. Studies reported here andelsewhere demonstrate rhythmic changes in uridine incorporationduring early cleavage which peaks at the trochophore stage.Continuous treatment of embryos with 50 to 100µ.g of actinomycin-D(AMD) starting at the 2-cell stage slowed development throughthe trochophore stage but did not prevent normal larval organdevelopment. This AMD application reduced 3H uridine incorporationmore than 90% but did not appreciably alter the pattern of totalor 14C leucine pulse labeled peptides on sodium dodecyl sulfate(SDS) ultrathin slab electrophoresis gels. However, pronouncedand numerous changes in the patterns of both labeled and unlabeledpeptides were observed during development through 4 days withthe most notable alterations occurring at the 2.5 post-gastrulastage. This was true in normal and continuously treated AMDembryos. The morphological and biochemical data suggest Lymnaeaearly development is controlled by stable maternal messengerRNA.  相似文献

SYNOPSIS. Experiments with amphibians have revealed that tissuesallografted in embryonic and early larval life may later succumbto a host immunological attack. In Xenopus, the ontogeny ofthis alloimmune response is correlated with the lymphoid maturationof the thymus. This article describes experiments primarilydesigned to ascertain if such a correlation exists in Rana pipiens. Initially, a histological study of the differentiation of thelymphomyeloid complex of the leopard frog was undertaken. At18–21°C lymphoid histogenesis is well under way inthe thymus and is beginning in many other organs during thethird week of larval life. Extensive growth and differentiationof these organs follow. Observations are also presented on thestructure, function and development of the lymphoid and Iymphomyeloidorgans from late larval life throughmetamorphosis to adulthood. Experiments were then performed to determine the onset of thealloimmune response to embryonically transplanted neural foldmaterial. At 18–21°C incompatibility phenomena, albeitslight, are first detected in these grafts as early as 17 daysafter fertilization, i.e. 15 days after transplantation. Thus,in the leopard frog, the alloimmune response develops soon afterlymphoid maturation of the thymus. At later stages of development,a more vigorous response is witnessed, concomitant with a rapidphase of lymphoid organ differentiation.  相似文献

SYNOPSIS. The transformation of the P. cynomolgi oocyst into definitive sporozoite forms occurs 8–10 days after an infective blood meal by Anopheles, stephensi mosquitoes. Vacuolization divides the oocyst cytoplasm into sporoblast sub-units from which sporozoites bud. Burrowing and plowing gastropods may have existed prior to the Mesozoic, contrary to the conservative tendency of categorizing Paleozoic archaeogastropods as herbivorous hardground dwellers. We propose that Euphemites and other bellerophontiform molluscs such as Praematuratroph and Beyrichidiscus make functional and paleoecological sense only if reconstructed with an internal shell adapted to an infaunal mode of life. Attributes diagnostic of a probable infaunal mode of life in fossil bellerophontiform molluscs include: (1) lack of apertural flare; (2) restricted aperture; (3) low rate of whorl expansion; (4) semi-radial aperture; (5) extensive secondary shell deposits; (6) absence of extensive collabral ornament; (7) dorsolateral or umbilical furrows; (8) color patterns indicative of mantle extension and retraction capabilities; (9) absence of shell breakage and repair; and (10) associated lithologies indicative of penetrable substrates such as mudstones. Niche diversity in the bellerophontacean molluscs was probably much greater than previously suspected. This is entirely consistent with their long geologic range. Most bellerophontaceans, particularly the Late Paleozoic forms, were probably either 'nestling' or semi-infaunal with the apertural margins enwrapped by mantle or mantle and foot. As such they may have been particularly susceptible to predation during the postulated Mesozoic increase in number of infaunal predators- a factor which may have been contributory to the bellerophontacean demise.  相似文献

Lagenophrys singularis is removed from Lagenophrys and designated the type species of Paralagenophrys n. g. Compared to members of Lagenophrys, the oral area of P. singularis is radically distorted. Paralagenophrys apparently also lacks second-type division, a special phase of sexual reproduction characteristic of Lagenophrys and associated with its adaptation to symbiotic life on crustaceans. Members of Lagenophrys are obligate ectocommensals of crustaceans. In contrast, P. singularis (Kellicott, 1887) n. comb. occurs most often on the leaves of aquatic vascular plants.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. Attention, perhaps overdue, is drawn to the extent and significance of endosymbionts (xenosomes sensu lato) in the cytoplasm and nuclei of many protozoa from diverse taxonomic groups. Even more importantly, recent advances in the study of such intimate associations are reviewed and discussed and their impact on broader problems of cell biology and evolution are stressed. Workers inside and especially outside the fields of protozoology and parasitology have often neglected such data, failing to appreciate their relevance to significant problems in their own fields of investigation. The major topics covered by speakers in the Symposium (to which this paper serves only as an introduction) include the following, in order of their presentation: terminology for the symbiont-host relationship and a brief overview of the field; the evolutionary problem of the origin of contemporary associations, including cell organelles such as mitochondria and plastids; the adaptive value of endosymbionts to their protozoan hosts; mechanisms of establishment, maintenance, and integration of such foreign bodies/invaders in their unicellular eukaryotic host cells; and the extent of algal and bacterial endosymbioses in diverse protozoan groups. In all papers, the principal relatively well studied complexes used as examples are the following: various kinds of algae in the larger foraminifera and in ciliates, radiolarians, and acantharians; the several types of bacteria in the cytoplasm of Amoeba and of Pelomyxa; the endonuclear bacterial symbionts of Paramecium; the cytoplasmic prokaryotes in Paramecium and in Parauronema; and the methanogenic bacteria of certain ciliates.  相似文献

Human erythrocytes infected with five strains of Plasmodium falciparum and Aotus erythrocytes infected with three strains of P. falciparum were studied by thin-section and freeze-fracture electron microscopy. All strains of P. falciparum we studied induced electron-dense conical knobs, measuring 30–40 nm in height and 90–100 nm in diameter on erythrocyte membranes. Freeze-fracture demonstrated that the knobs were distributed over the membrane of both human and Aotus erythrocytes. A distinct difference was seen between the intramembrane particle (IMP) distribution over the knobs of human and Aotus erythrocyte membranes. There was no change in IMP distribution in infected human erythrocyte membranes, but infected Aotus erythrocytes showed an aggregation of IMP over the P face of the knobs with a clear zone at the base. This difference in IMP distribution was related only to the host species and not to parasite strains. Biochemical analysis demonstrated that a higher proportion of band 3 was bound to the cytoskeleton of uninfected Aotus erythrocytes than uninfected human erythrocytes after Triton X-100 extraction. This may account for the different effects of P. falciparum infection on IMP distribution in the two different cell types.  相似文献

Oocysts of Calyptospora empristica n. sp., the second described species in its genus, are described from the freshwater starhead topminnow, Fundulus notti, in southern Mississippi. Oocysts are 22 μm in diameter with a wall about 20 nm thick and have no residuum, micropyle, or polar granule. Sporocysts are spheroid, 9 × 5 μm with a two-layered wall approximately 120 nm thick. They have an oblong apical opening at the anterior pole, a single ornamented sporopodium approximately 5.7 μm long at the posterior pole, and a residuum. An intermediate host, most likely the freshwater grass shrimp Palaemonetes kadiakensis, is probably required to complete the life cycle.  相似文献
