The bank vole experienced a complex history during the Quaternary. Repeated isolation in glacial refugia led to the differentiation of several lineages in less than 300 000 years. We investigated if such a recent differentiation led to a significant divergence of phenotypic characters between European lineages, which might provide insight into processes of intraspecific differentiation. The size and shape of the first and third upper molars, and first lower molar, of bank voles genetically attributed to different lineages were quantified using an outline analysis of their occlusal surface. The three teeth present similar trends of decreasing size towards high latitudes. This trend, the inverse of Bergmann's rule, is interpreted as the result of a balance between metabolic efficiency and food availability, favouring small body size in cold regions. Molar shape appeared to differ between lineages despite genetic evidence of suture zones. A mosaic pattern of evolution between the different teeth was evidenced. The analysis of such phenotypic features appears as a valuable complement to genetic analyses, providing a complementary insight into evolutionary processes, such as selective pressures, that have driven the differentiation of the lineages. Rapid evolutionary change is increasingly being recognized as commonplace, but the evolutionary consequences for species and ecosystems under human‐induced selection regimes have not been explored in detail, although many species occur in such environments. In a common garden experiment and with amplified fragment length polymorphism markers, we examined whether genetic differentiation has taken place between spatially intermixed populations of creeping thistles Cirsium arvense (Asteraceae) collected from a natural habitat (maritime shores), a semi‐natural habitat (road verges) and arable fields under two management regimes: conventional and organic farming. Populations of C. arvense have altered genetically and locally adapted their growth patterns with changed land use. Although plants from different habitats showed similar total biomass production, shoot and root production was higher for maritime populations, suggesting selection for increased competitive ability. Competitive ability then declined in the order semi‐natural, conventional farms and organic farms. Thistles in arable fields may be more selected for tolerance against disturbances from herbicides and mechanical weed control. In addition, early shoot sprouting and genetic analysis showed differentiation between plants originating from conventional farms and farms that were converted to organic 9–30 years ago, suggesting some adaptation to altered crop cultivation practices. © 2010 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2010, 99 , 797–807.  相似文献

The New Zealand Subantarctic Islands, emergent remnants of the Campbell Plateau, were given World Heritage status in 1998 in recognition of their importance to global biodiversity. We describe the flora and fauna of these islands and discuss the results of recent phylogenetic analyses. Part of the New Zealand Subantarctic biota appears to be relictual and to be derived from west Gondwana. The relictual element is characterized by genera endemic to the Campbell Plateau that show relationships with taxa of the southern South Island, New Zealand, southern South America, and the north Pacific. In contrast, a younger, east Gondwanan element is composed of species that are either taxonomically identical to widespread mainland species, or endemic species with close New Zealand relatives. Area cladograms support the inclusion of the southern South Island, New Zealand and Macquarie Island (although this is separate geologically) as parts of the Campbell Plateau, but suggest the Chatham Rise and Torlesse terranes of the eastern South Island, New Zealand were originally parts of east Gondwana. East and west Antarctica acted as independent plates during the breakup of Gondwana, and were separated by oceanic crust until a compressive phase sutured them along the trace of the trans‐Antarctic mountains during the early Tertiary. The Campbell Plateau microcontinent was connected to west Antarctica until its separation at 80 Mya, contemporaneous with the separation of the southern portion of the Melanesian rift from east Gondwana. Presently the Campbell Plateau is joined to the Melanesian Rift along the Alpine Fault. Cenozoic plate tectonic reconstructions place the Campbell Plateau adjacent to the Melanesian Rift throughout the rift–drift phase, relative motion being confined to strike–slip movement over the last 20 Myr. Our synthesis of phylogenetic and plate tectonic evidence suggests that the Alpine Fault is the most recent development of a much older extensional rift/basin boundary originally separating west and east Gondwana. © 2005 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2005, 86 , 95–115.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

During territorial behaviour and pair formation willow ptarmigan cocks and hens use several different calls. Cocks use mainly a “flight call”, a “ground call” and three different “threat calls”. Hens give similar calls to cocks. It is suggested that the structure of the calls is well adapted to (1) transmit their possible information content over long distances, and (2) make localization easier for birds during the territorial display periods, which take place mainly in poor light at dusk and dawn. We also suggest that the cock and hen calls express different degrees of aggressiveness, and that hen calls, in addition to attracting cocks, function as territorial “keep out” signals to other hens.  相似文献

Graphiurus is a peculiar taxon among the monophyletic Gliridae (order Rodentia) in showing hystricomorphy of the zygomasseteric architecture of the skull [large infraorbital foramen (IOF), and correlative muscular arrangements). We analysed 34 extant genera taken from two groups of sciurognath rodents that share a large IOF (hystricomorph and myomorph) using elliptical Fourier transform in order to appraise whether this feature of cranial morphology was also accompanied by similar changes in mandible shape. The mandible of Graphiurus is distinct from those of all other hystricomorph sciurognath rodents in showing a more elongated coronoid process and a shorter angular process. Thus, two distinct zygomasseteric organizations (i.e. myomorphy and hystricomorphy of graphiurines) are associated with a similar mandible shape characterized by a well‐developed coronoid process. Results show that hystricomorphy of graphiurines was achieved convergently with other hystricomorph rodents. Abstract 1. In many Coleoptera, iridescent colouration is generated by exoskeleton ultra‐structure, within which multilayer interference reflects only certain wavelengths. Published work indicates that the colour polymorphism shown by some iridescent beetles is under genetic control. However, the present study suggests environmental involvement in the polymorphic southern African dung beetle, Gymnopleurus humanus Macleay. 2. At 24 study sites across a 1000‐km latitudinal temperature gradient, population samples of G. humanus were dominated by blue individuals in the cooler south, by cupreous individuals in the warmer north, and by locally co‐occurring blue, green and cupreous individuals in intermediate situations. 3. Using digital reflectance spectrophotometry, we measured wavelength intensity values across the visible spectrum (400–800 nm) and used the 70 measured specimens to estimate maximum reflectance from a further 3912 beetles. Differences in mean reflectance values between 24 populations were strongly correlated with average annual temperatures at study sites. 4. Much stronger correlations between mean reflectance values and average temperatures of the cool dry season months suggest that the cross‐climatic patterns may be related to interaction between breeding seasonality and development under different cooler temperatures. 5. Published evidence suggests that inherent physical properties of cholesteric liquid crystals and their responses to different thermal conditions could, potentially, generate the different exocuticle ultra‐structure responsible for different reflected colour wavelengths. Furthermore, colour polymorphism could be advantageous across a gradient from cooler to warmer climate as a result of the different thermal properties of different colours. 6. Given the correlation with temperature, it is predicted that the prevailing reflected colour balance in southern populations would shift in response to global climatic change.  相似文献

The broad-toothed field mouse ( Apodemus mystacinus ) is distributed throughout the Balkan Peninsula, Asia Minor and the Middle East. It is generally split into two different specific entities: Apodemus epimelas occurs on the Balkan Peninsula and A. mystacinus inhabits Asia Minor and the Middle East. This analysis, based on two mitochondrial regions (cytochrome b and the D-loop) and the interstitial retinol binding protein (IRBP) nuclear gene, confirms an important level of genetic divergence between the animals from these regions and their separation from each other at least 4.2–5.1 Mya, which is in favour of a distinct specific status. Finally, the broad-toothed field mice from south-western Turkey appear to be closely related to the animals from Crete but highly distinct from the populations of the other Oriental regions. This supports a distinct subspecific level ( A. m. rhodius ) for the insular animals and also for those from south-western Turkey. From a biogeographical point of view, it can be assumed that either late Pliocene or early Pleistocene cooling led to the isolation of two main groups of A. mystacinus , one in the Balkan region and the other one in Turkey and the Near East (Syria and Israel). In this region, it is suggested that a more recent event appeared during the Quaternary period, isolating broad-toothed field mice in Crete and leading to the appearance of two well-differentiated genetic groups: one in Crete and south-western Turkey, and the other widespread in northern and eastern Turkey as well as in the Near East.  © 2005 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2005, 85 , 53–63.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. The small subunit ribosomal DNA (SSUrDNA) of all described Naegleria spp. was amplified by polymerase chain reaction with universal primers. In all strains of N. andersoni andersoni, N. andersoni jamiesoni, N. australiensis italica and two related strains, and one out of four clusters of N. gruberi , a band of approximately 3.3 kb was obtained. All other strains displayed a band with the expected DNA length of 2.0 kb. This means the former have a 1.3 kb intron in the SSUrDNA. Restriction analysis demonstrated that the intron is between two conserved Pst I sites at the 5' end of the SSUrDNA It also suggested the introns might not be identical in each species or subspecies. The Pst I fragment of SSUrDNA containing the 1.3 kb insert in N. andersoni andersoni was cloned and sequence. The 1,296-nucleotide insert is situated in helix 19 of the SSUrDNA, which is an area of conserved primary and secondary structure. Sequence and secondary structure analyses of the insert revealed it is a group I intron. This group I intron is very large and contains an open reading frame that could serve to encode a polypeptide of 139 amino acids in size.  相似文献
