The correct identification of colony boundaries is an essential prerequisite for empirical studies of ant behaviour and evolution. Ant colonies function at various organizational levels, and these boundaries may be difficult to assess. Moreover, new complexity can be generated through the presence of spatially discrete subgroups within a more or less genetically homogeneous colony, a situation called polydomy. A colony is polydomous only if individuals (workers and brood) of its constituent nests function as a social and cooperative unit and are regularly interchanged among nests. This condition was previously called polycalic, and the term polydomy was used in a broader sense for a group of daughter nests of the same mother colony (implying limited female dispersal), without regard to whether these different nests continued to exchange individuals. We think that this distinction between ‘polycaly’ and ‘polydomy’ concerns two disparate concepts. We thus prefer the narrower definition of polydomy, which groups individuals that interact socially. Does this new level of organization affect the way in which natural selection acts on social traits? Here, after examining the history of terms, we review all ant species that have been described as expressing polydomous structures. We show that there is no particular syndrome of traits predictably associated with polydomy. We detail the existing theoretical predictions and empirical results on the ecology of polydomy, and the impact of polydomy on social evolution and investment strategies, while carefully distinguishing monogynous from polygynous species. Finally, we propose a methodology for future studies and offer ideas about what remains to be done. © 2007 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2007, 90 , 319–348.  相似文献

Identification of Leishmania spp. by Radiorespirometry   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
SYNOPSIS Preliminary investigation of the application of radiorespirometric technic to protozoan parasites of man indicates a potential for rapid identification. This technic, developed for identification of bacteria, was modified for use with culture forms of Leishmania. Five strains of Leishmania were compared: 2 of L. donovani , 2S and K; L. brasiliensis , 2936 and B; and 1 of L. tropica , A. Consistent and rapid (2 hr) identification was obtained by the radiorespirometric procedure. A computer-type analysis of the radiorespirometric profiles of the 5 strains permitted correct identification of each isolate at the strain level 100% of the time. This technic offers several advantages over many current procedures for identification of protozoan parasites: (A) It is simple, rapid and highly reproducible. (B) Since it does not rely on visual or spectrophoto-metric determination, it may be conducted in the presence of optically complex substances. (C) It requires relatively low numbers of organisms (2 × 105/14C-labeled substrate). (D) It is based on differential enzymic activity between species and strains of organisms and therefore, ultimately, on inherent genetic determinates of the parasites. (E) Further development of the procedure and accumulation of a data reference "bank" would allow automation of most of the identification process.  相似文献

The major seed storage proteins in alfalfa are medicagin (alegumin-like globulin), alfin (a vicilin-like globulin) anda family of Lower Molecular Weight albumins (LMW13). These comprise30%, 10% and 20%, respectively, of the total extractable proteinfrom cotyledons of mature seeds. Alfin is a heterogeneous oligomericprotein (Mr 150 kD) composed of polypeptides ranging in sizefrom Mr 50 to 14 kD (1,-6; 50, 38, 32, 20, 16 and 14 kD, respectively).Medicagin is also a high molecular weight oligomeric protein, but requires high concentrations of salt for solubilization. It is comprised of a family of individually distinct subunits, each composed of an acidic polypeptide (A1–A9; Mr 49 to39 kD) linked via disulphide bond(s) to a basic polypeptide(B1, B2, B3; Mr 24, 23 and 20 kD, respectively). This pairingis highly specific and two families are recognizable on thebasis of the B polypeptide (B3 or B1/B2). Subunits (Mr 50–65kD) are assembled as trimers (8S) or larger oligomers (12S–15S)in mature seeds. The lower molecular weight albumins (LMW13)are acidic (pl<6), and consist of sets of disulphide-bondedpolypeptides (Mr 15 and 11 kD). Key words: Medicago sativa, seed storage proteins, alfin, medicagin  相似文献
