Group members present physical and physiological differences according to their age, sex or social status, which could generate motivation differences among individuals during travel. In spite of these divergences of interest among individuals, the group succeeds more often than not in making a collective decision about departure time and which direction to take. To reach a consensus decision, animals should exchange information relating to characteristics of group movement through different communication channels. The main purpose of this study is to understand the function of behaviour patterns displayed during movements of white-faced capuchins (Cebus capucinus). We designed experiments in which we provoked collective movements involving a binary choice. During experiments, a video camera recorded the behaviour of each capuchin, which enabled us to determine which individuals displayed a behavioural pattern during travel and how this behaviour influenced the other group members. We found that looking backwards seemed to permit the recruitment of group mates during collective movement. This behaviour also seemed to allow the quantification of the number of followers, since the emitter modified its locomotion speed according to this number. In this preliminary study, we showed that visual behaviour was used to recruit and monitor group mates during collective movements and provided information on mechanisms involved in maintaining cohesion and coordination among group members during travel.  相似文献

Renal fibrosis is the common histological feature of advanced glomerular and tubulointerstitial disease leading to end-stage renal disease (ESRD). However, specific antifibrotic therapies to slow down the evolution to ESRD are still absent. Because persistent inflammation is a key event in the development of fibrosis, we hypothesized that the proinflammatory kinin B1 receptor (B1R) could be such a new target. Here we show that, in the unilateral ureteral obstruction model of renal fibrosis, the B1R is overexpressed and that delayed treatment with an orally active nonpeptide B1R antagonist blocks macrophage infiltration, leading to a reversal of the level of renal fibrosis. In vivo bone marrow transplantation studies as well as in vitro studies on renal cells show that part of this antifibrotic mechanism of B1R blockade involves a direct effect on resident renal cells by inhibiting chemokine CCL2 and CCL7 expression. These findings suggest that blocking the B1R is a promising antifibrotic therapy.  相似文献

The cellular prion protein (PrPC) is a membrane-bound glycoprotein especially abundant in the central nervous system (CNS). The scrapie prion protein (PrPSc, also termed prions) is responsible of transmissible spongiform encephalopathies (TSE), a group of neurodegenerative diseases which affect humans and other mammal species, although the presence of PrPC is needed for the establishment and further evolution of prions.The present work compares the expression and localization of PrPC between healthy human brains and those suffering from Alzheimer disease (AD).In both situations we have observed a rostrocaudal decrease in the amount of PrPC within the CNS, both by immunoblotting and immunohistochemistry techniques. PrPC is higher expressed in our control brains than in AD cases. There was a neuronal loss and astogliosis in our AD cases. There was a tendency of a lesser expression of PrPC in AD cases than in healthy ones. And in AD cases, the intensity of the expression of the unglycosylated band is higher than the di- and monoglycosylated bands.With regards to amyloid plaques, those present in AD cases were positively labeled for PrPC, a result which is further supported by the presence of PrPC in the amyloid plaques of a transgenic line of mice mimicking AD.The work was done according to Helsinki Declaration of 1975, and approved by the Ethics Committee of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Navarre.Key words: cellular prion protein, Alzheimer disease, transgenic mice  相似文献

Many biological networks grow under strong spatial constraints, where the large-scale structure emerges from the extension, the branching and intersection of growing parts of the network. One example is provided by ant tunnelling networks, which represent the most common nest architecture in ants. Our goal was to understand how these network structures emerge from the tunnel growth dynamics. We used a standardized two-dimensional set-up shaped as a disk and studied the characteristics of tunnel growth in terms of initiation, propagation and termination of new digging sites and found that they can be described with simple probabilistic laws. We show that a model based on these simple laws and for which parameters were measured from the sand disks experiments can account for the emergence of several topological properties that were observed in experimental networks. In particular, the model accurately reproduced an allometric relation between the number of edges and the number of nodes, as well as an invariance of the node degree distribution. The model was then used to make predictions about the resulting networks' topology when the geometry of the sand substrate was shaped as a square. Experiments aimed at testing the model's predictions showed that the predictions were indeed validated. Both in the model and in the experiments, there was a similar trend for the node degree distribution tail to be steeper in the square sand patch than in the disk sand patch, while other characteristics such as the meshedness (i.e. how densely the network is internally connected) remained constant. Because network growth based on branching/fusion events is widespread in biological systems, this general model might provide useful insights for the study of other systems and, more generally, the evolution of spatial networks in biological systems.  相似文献

During collective movement, animals display a wide variety of mechanisms to maintain cohesion. In some species, individuals rely mainly on following their direct predecessor, thereby forming spectacular processions of individuals in single file. Despite being the simplest case of following behaviour, it is largely absent from the theoretical literature on collective migrations. The objective of this study is to quantify the efficiency of following the predecessor, in terms of ensuring cohesion. The situation we consider is a sequence of individuals facing a bifurcation. The choice between left and right is influenced by the choice of the predecessor. First, we model this situation with a two-state Markov chain with a symmetric transition matrix. Cohesion is quantified as the expected number of individuals on either side, and the expected number of consecutive followers. Although cohesion increases with the probability of following, it remains surprisingly low unless the probability is almost equal to one. Furthermore, cohesion decreases with group size regardless of the probability of following. Then, we generalise our model to situations in which individuals have a preference for one of the two choices (asymmetric transition matrix). For some parameter sets, the tendency to follow each other leads a large fraction of the individuals to the non preferred side. Moreover, this fraction increases with the total population size. Finally, we include the possibility to follow N individuals. This provides the link between our model and other collective migration models. If enough individuals are perceived, the results shift from symmetrical (low cohesion) to asymmetrical (high cohesion) distribution of the individuals. All in all, our results suggest that following the direct predecessor must be complemented with other cohesive behaviours (involving the perception of more individuals or a navigation system) to guarantee its efficiency. We discuss our findings in the context of the different following behaviours covered in the literature.  相似文献

Summary Polyethism is a well-known phenomenon in social insects. How this phenomenon influences interactions among individuals, the spatial distribution in the nest is, on the other hand, very rarely documented. Therefore, we conducted experiments on the ant Lasius niger to observe the influence of polyethism on aggregation, by distinguishing two groups of ants: the brood-tenders and the foragers. We show a great difference in their self aggregation level. Brood-tenders are characterized by a rapid and dense gathering in one main stable cluster while foragers gather in several small unstable clusters. We show experimentally and verify with a model that this difference in behaviour is based on a smaller probability of leaving a cluster for the brood-tenders. Aggregation in the mixed case (groups composed of brood-tenders and foragers) is very close to that of the pure forager case, showing a decrease in the level of aggregation of the brood-tenders respecting to the pure group of brood-tenders. Nevertheless, experimental results supported by the results of the model, show that ants do not change their own behaviour when the two groups are together. Therefore, the decrease of the aggregation of brood-tenders in the mixed case can be explained by a difference in the dynamics between brood-tenders and foragers.Received 9 May 2003; revised 26 August 2003; accepted 1 September 2003.  相似文献

The fetal globin genes G gamma and A gamma from one chromosome of a chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes) were sequenced and found to be closely similar to the corresponding genes of man and the gorilla. These genes contain identical promoter and termination signals and have exons 1 and 2 separated by the conserved short intron 1 (122 bp) and exons 2 and 3 separated by the more rapidly evolving, larger intron 2 (893 bp and 887 bp in chimpanzee G gamma and A gamma, respectively). Each intron 2 has a stretch of simple sequence DNA (TG)n serving possibly as a "hot spot" for recombination. The two chimpanzee genes encode polypeptide chains that differ only at position 136 (glycine in G gamma and alanine in A gamma) and that are identical to the corresponding human chains, which have aspartic acid at position 73 and lysine at 104 in contrast to glycine and arginine at these respective positions of the gorilla A gamma chain. Phylogenetic analysis by the parsimony method revealed four silent (synonymous) base substitutions in evolutionary descent of the chimpanzee G gamma and A gamma codons and none in the human and gorilla codons. These Homininae (Pan, Homo, Gorilla) coding sequences evolved at one-tenth the average mammalian rate for nonsynonymous and one-fourth that for synonymous substitutions. Three sequence regions that were affected by gene conversions between chimpanzee G gamma and A gamma loci were identified: one extended 3' of the hot spot with G gamma replaced by the A gamma sequence, another extended 5' of the hot spot with A gamma replaced by G gamma, and the third conversion extended from the 5' flanking to the 5' end of intron 2, with G gamma replaced here by the A gamma sequence. A conversion similar to this third one has occurred independently in the descent of the gorilla genes. The four previously identified conversions, labeled C1-C4 (Scott et al. 1984), were substantiated with the addition of the chimpanzee genes to our analysis (C1 being shared by all three hominines and C2, C3, and C4 being found only in humans). Thus, the fetal genes from all three of these hominine species have been active in gene conversions during the descent of each species.   相似文献

An essential mechanism for repairing DNA double‐strand breaks is homologous recombination (HR). One of its core catalysts is human RAD51 (hRAD51), which assembles as a helical nucleoprotein filament on single‐stranded DNA, promoting DNA‐strand exchange. Here, we study the interaction of hRAD51 with single‐stranded DNA using a single‐molecule approach. We show that ATP‐bound hRAD51 filaments can exist in two different states with different contour lengths and with a free‐energy difference of ~4 kBT per hRAD51 monomer. Upon ATP hydrolysis, the filaments convert into a disassembly‐competent ADP‐bound configuration. In agreement with the single‐molecule analysis, we demonstrate the presence of two distinct protomer interfaces in the crystal structure of a hRAD51‐ATP filament, providing a structural basis for the two conformational states of the filament. Together, our findings provide evidence that hRAD51‐ATP filaments can exist in two interconvertible conformational states, which might be functionally relevant for DNA homology recognition and strand exchange.  相似文献
