Studies on populations of Brevicoryne brassicae (L.), its parasites and hyperparasites were carried out by actual counting in the sprouts field and by sticky and water traps. B. brassicae was found to be attacked by one primary parasite, Diaretiella rapae (McIntosh ), which in turn is parasitized by Alloxysta brassicae (Ashm. ),Asaphes vulgarisWalker ,A. suspensus (Nees ),Pachyneuron minutissimum (Förster ) and Dendrocerus carpenterii (Curtis ). The aphid population in the field was started by immigrant alates which were found flying too early to be synchronized with the sprouts plants. Similarly D. rapae was not synchronized with the aphids although many individuals could have been carried into a plot through parasitized immigrant alates, of which less than 30% were found parasitized. Because of high hyperparasitism (especially by A. brassicae)D. rapae was not able to maintain a high rate of parasitism to curb the aphid population growth. The maximum percentage mummies being 27.8%, while the maximum, percentage parasitism being 56.6% recorded only during the early 1974 season (mean=12.9%). The decline of aphid population from September onwards was largely due to the cold weather, Syrphid predation and occasionally fungal attack. The high rate of hyperparasitism by A. brassicae is attributed to its better synchronization with D. rapae. The mean percentage of parasite that emerged from mummies collected during 1973–74 were D. rapae 31.3%,A. brassicae 64.3%,A. vulgaris and A. suspensus 4.3%,D. carpenterii 0.2% and P. minutissimum 0.1%.  相似文献

We investigated the floral characteristics, floral biology and floral visitors of the six Bornean Tacca species: T. bibracteata (only floral characteristics), T. borneensis, T. havilandii, T. leontopetaloides, T. palmata and T. reducta, and T. cristata from Peninsular Malaysia. All species are protogynous with pollen strings extruded post flower opening. Blooming of all species started from dawn except for T. leontopetaloides which flowered from dusk. While T. borneensis, T. cristata, T. havilandii, T. leontopetaloides and T. reducta are facultatively autogamic as the pollen/ovule ratios (P/O ratios) were low, T. bibracteata is facultatively xenogamic as its P/O ratio was higher. Four species (T. borneensis, T. cristata, T. havilandii and T. reducta) were tested for autonomous self-pollination but all failed to set fruit. Manual self- and cross-pollination treatments of T. borneensis, T. cristata and T. havilandii showed reduced fruit set and seed set. In contrast, T. reducta was highly self-compatible. The showy bracts and bracteoles of T. borneensis are needed to guarantee pollination success but is not so in the other species investigated. Tacca are pollinated by two pollination guilds of female midges: two species of Forcipomyia (Lasiohelea) and Culicoides hinnoi. The floral biology and mating system of Tacca species indicate that most fruits and seeds were produced in samples resulting from natural pollination.  相似文献

Rab31 is expressed in both GFAP- and nestin- positive fibres in regions of neurogenic potential in the adult mouse brain. To investigate the role of Rab31 in neural progenitor cells (NPCs), we cultured NPCs and found significant levels of Rab31 expression in these cells. Rab31 levels showed a sharp initial decrease and then reappeared gradually in a subpopulation of astrocytes when NPCs were induced to differentiate. Silencing of Rab31 hindered, while overexpression enhanced, the differentiation of NPCs to astrocytes. Our results suggest a previously unrecognised role for Rab31 in influencing the differentiation and fate of NPCs.  相似文献

The chemical industry is increasingly looking toward sustainable technology to reduce the environmental impact and minimize the footprint of a chemical process. This work, which presents emerging technologies in academia and industry, discusses the development of advanced processes for the production of epoxidized plant oil-based plasticizers. The effects of the substrate structure, oxygen-donor properties, catalysts and biocatalysts on the specificity of the epoxidation reaction are intensively discussed. The progress in enzymatic epoxidation and the application of neoteric media, such as ionic liquids, are also highlighted. Particular attention is given to understanding how the emerging processes, including the new catalysts and novel reaction systems, work to dictate the reaction efficiency and selectivity. Given the potential applications of gas vesicles (GVs) in multiple fields including antigen-displaying and imaging, heterologous reconstitution of synthetic GVs is an attractive and interesting study that has translational potential. Here, we attempted to express and assemble GV proteins (GVPs) into GVs using the model eukaryotic organism Saccharomyces cerevisiae. We first selected and expressed two core structural proteins, GvpA and GvpC from cyanobacteria Anabaena flos-aquae and Planktothrix rubescens, respectively. We then optimized the protein production conditions and validated GV assembly in the context of GV shapes. We found that when two copies of anaA were integrated into the genome, the chromosomal expression of AnaA resulted in GV production regardless of GvpC expression. Next, we co-expressed chaperone-RFP with the GFP-AnaA to aid the AnaA aggregation. The co-expression of individual chaperones (Hsp42, Sis1, Hsp104, and GvpN) with AnaA led to the formation of larger inclusions and enhanced the sequestration of AnaA into the perivacuolar site. To our knowledge, this represents the first study on reconstitution of GVs in S. cerevisiae. Our results could provide insights into optimizing conditions for heterologous protein production as well as the reconstitution of other synthetic microcompartments in yeast.  相似文献

This paper reviews the marine living resources management practices in the ASEAN region. Lessons learned from past management of these resources are highlighted with an analysis of impacts. The lack of an appropriate management policy at national and regional levels, inefficient enforcement measures, the rapid population growth and unsustainable economic development have all contributed to the degradation of the resource base in the marine environment of many ASEAN members.The need to establish a holistic and integrated management approach as well as action plans to mitigate the accelerated deterioration of the marine environmental quality and to promote sustainable use of resources is strongly emphasized in this paper. Recent changes in government policies in ASEAN towards sustainable development could provide valuable opportunities to arrest further resource depletion. The ASEAN initiation of integrated management of marine resources is a step towards the right direction.  相似文献
