Autophagy is an evolutionarily conserved cellular process through which long-lived proteins and damaged organelles are recycled to maintain energy homeostasis. These proteins and organelles are sequestered into a double-membrane structure, or autophagosome, which subsequently fuses with a lysosome in order to degrade the cargo. Although originally classified as a type of programmed cell death, autophagy is more widely viewed as a basic cell survival mechanism to combat environmental stressors. Autophagy genes were initially identified in yeast and were found to be necessary to circumvent nutrient stress and starvation. Subsequent elucidation of mammalian gene counterparts has highlighted the importance of this process to normal development. This review provides an overview of autophagy, the types of autophagy, its regulation and its known impact on development gleaned primarily from murine models. 相似文献

Manufacturers recommend that linear position transducers (LPTs) should be placed on the side of a barbell (or wooden dowel) to measure countermovement jump (CMJ) height, but the validity and reliability of this placement have not been compared to other attachment sites. Since this recommended attachment site is far from the centre of mass, a belt attachment where the LPT is placed between the feet may increase the validity and reliability of CMJ data. Thirty-six physical education students participated in the study (24.6 ± 4.3 years; 177.0 ± 7.7 cm; 77.2 ± 9.0 kg). Parameters from the two LPT attachments (barbell and belt) were simultaneously validated to force plate data, where the nature of bias was analysed (systematic vs random). The within-session and between-session reliability of both attachment sites were compared to force plate data using a test-retest protocol of two sets of 5 CMJs separated by 7 days. The LPT provided highly reliable and valid measures of peak force, mean force, mean power, and jump height, where the bias was mostly systematic (r2 > 0.7; ICC > 0.9). Peak velocity, mean velocity, and peak power were in very good agreement with the force plate and were highly reliable (r2 > 0.5; ICC > 0.7). Therefore, both attachment sites produced similar results with a systematic bias compared to force plate data. Thus, both attachment sites seem to be valid for assessing CMJs when the measuring tool and site remain consistent across measurements. Oviposition behaviour and host size ? fitness relationships of a gregarious, idiobiont ectoparasitoid, Elachertus cacoeciae (Howard) (Hymenoptera: Eulophidae), were studied by implanting one fourth‐, fifth‐, and sixth‐instar spruce budworm Choristoneura fumiferana (Clemens) (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae) larva per tree in a stand where the density of the wild C. fumiferana population was low. 2. Development time of E. cacoeciae larvae was quickest on fifth‐instar C. fumiferana larvae, which were the preferred hosts for oviposition. 3. Brood sex ratio (proportion of females) was related positively to increasing C. fumiferana instar, indicating that more females were laid on larger hosts. 4. Parasitoid offspring size increased with increasing C. fumiferana instar and decreased with increasing brood size on smaller hosts. Female but not male size was related positively to increasing brood sex ratio (proportion of females). 5. Under laboratory conditions, parasitoid longevity was related positively to parasitoid size and realised lifetime fecundity, and clutch size was related positively to host size. 6. The northeast Atlantic has warmed significantly since the early 1980s, leading to shifts in species distributions and changes in the structure and functioning of communities and ecosystems. This study investigated the effects of increased temperature on two co-existing habitat-forming kelps: Laminaria digitata, a northern boreal species, and Laminaria ochroleuca, a southern Lusitanian species, to shed light on mechanisms underpinning responses of trailing and leading edge populations to warming. Kelp sporophytes collected from southwest United Kingdom were maintained under 3 treatments: ambient temperature (12 °C), +3 °C (15 °C) and +6 °C (18 °C) for 16 days. At higher temperatures, L. digitata showed a decline in growth rates and Fv/Fm, an increase in chemical defence production and a decrease in palatability. In contrast, L. ochroleuca demonstrated superior growth and photosynthesis at temperatures higher than current ambient levels, and was more heavily grazed. Whilst the observed decreased palatability of L. digitata held at higher temperatures could reduce top-down pressure on marginal populations, field observations of grazer densities suggest that this may be unimportant within the study system. Overall, our study suggests that shifts in trailing edge populations will be primarily driven by ecophysiological responses to high temperatures experienced during current and predicted thermal maxima, and although compensatory mechanisms may reduce top-down pressure on marginal populations, this is unlikely to be important within the current biogeographical context. Better understanding of the mechanisms underpinning climate-driven range shifts is important for habitat-forming species like kelps, which provide organic matter, create biogenic structure and alter environmental conditions for associated communities. 相似文献
