ABSTRACT. Adult winged forms of Aphis fabae Scop., the spring migrants (fundatrigeniae; alate virginoparae), the summer migrants (alate virginoparae) and the autumn migrants (gynoparae), were flown in an automated vertical wind tunnel, with a small green target presented every 60 s. On average, targeted flight developed in the spring and summer migrants after 19 and 15 min, respectively. However, in autumn migrants targeted flight occurred after 184 min of flight. No evidence of target approach was found up to 30 min prior to this time, although some movement towards the target was observed in the 30 min before the first response of autumn migrants, suggesting that a gradual change from migratory to targeted flight occurred. No correlation was found between aphid weight and the time to first response for spring or summer migrants, but a positive correlation was found for autumn migrants. Flight patterns of autumn migrants, in the absence of a target, are described and compared with flight patterns previously reported for summer migrants.  相似文献

As competition from lianas reduces fitness of host trees, lianas could influence community composition and structure if potential host species differ in susceptibility to infestation. We quantified infestation frequencies of Chilean temperate rainforest tree species by the massive liana Hydrangea serratifolia (H. et A.) F. Phil (Hydrangeaceae), which climbs using adhesive adventitious roots, and examined relationships with host light requirements and stem diameter. We recorded presence or absence of H. serratifolia in a random sample of 515 trees ≥10 cm diameter. Fifty‐four per cent of trees were infested by at least one individual of H. serratifolia. Although there was significant interspecific variation in infestation frequency, this variation was not systematically related to light requirements of host tree species. Probability of infestation increased with diameter for most host tree species, and old trees were found to be infested by a wide range of liana size classes, including some stems <2 cm diameter. This evidence supports the proposal that lianas which attach by adhesive roots can colonize host stems of any size.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. In uncrowded rearing conditions, determination of the winged gynopara of the Aphis fabae Scopoli is dependent upon both pre- and postnatal short days (LD 12:12). Extension of the photophase to produce longday (LD 16:8) conditions localized on the head or abdominal region, showed that during the early larval instars of the parent generation (G1) there is a maternally-controlled induction of gynoparae. However, during later stages of embryonic development the presumptive gynoparae respond directly to photoperiod through the mother's abdominal wall. During early postnatal development, presumptive gynoparae (G2) remain sensitive to photoperiodic conditions; the photoperiodic receptors lie in the head. These results are discussed with respect to possible endocrine mediators of this photoperiodically controlled polymorphism.  相似文献

Abstract. The photoperiodic induction of presexual females (gynoparae) and males of the aphid Rhopalosiphum padi (L.) was examined in single clones collected from different latitudes (N clone from Blair Atholl, 56.5N 3.1W; C clone from Leeds, 53.5N 1.4W and S clone from Exeter, 50.4N 3.3W). Critical night lengths (CNLs) for gynopara and male production (CNLs: 50% of maximum production) and inter-clonal differences, defined by the different forms of progeny produced at a single discriminating night length (12 h 30 min), were measured at 16 ± 1C. The aphid clones differed in CNL and in the morphs produced at the discriminating night length. These differences were used to investigate the inheritance of the photoperiodic response. In crosses between clones the photoperiodic response showed considerable overall variation. The variation in CNLs indicated that the photoperiodic response was unlikely to affect the overwintering success after long-distance movement of clones from one latitude to another.  相似文献

Abstract. Newly born larvae (presumptive gynoparae) of the aphid Aphis fabae were exposed to 'symmetrical skeleton' photoperiods, consisting of two equal pulses of light per 24 h. The general form of the photoperiods tested was LDLD 1:10:1:12 h. This regime is open to two 'interpretations', LDLD 1:10:1:12 h (PPs12) and LDLD 1:12:1:10 h (PPs14). As both light pulses are close to 12 h apart, it is expected that the interpretations result in two distinct steady state phase relationships, i.e. this regime would show bistability. If this is true and both interpretations could be adopted, PPs12 is expected to result in a low and PPs14 in a high percentage of 'apterized' insects.
Experiments undertaken with the aphid showed that bistability did not occur either at 15C or 20C, and the results could be entirely explained on the basis of an 'instantly' damping circadian oscillator clock.  相似文献

Abstract. The Photoperiodic of winged females (alatae) in the black bean aphid, Aphis fabae Scop. (Homopetera: Aphididae), is investigated in detail with emphasis on the interaction of the maternal and embryonic/young larval photoperiodic clocks. Previous work had shown that in uncrowded conditions the induction of gynoparae (winged females that produce sexual females) requires both prenatal and postnatal exposure to long-night (12 h) Photoperidic cycles: present results show that sole postantal exposure to long nights of any lenght does not induce wing formation in early-born aphids.
When aphids were exposed to experimental light-dark cycles postanatally only, their daughters developed as alate in long nights and as apterae in short nights: the critical night lenght (CNL) was 11:1 h. Additional prenatal exposure to experimental regimes resulted in a significantly shorter CNL (10.6 h). This difference could be accounted for by the fact that more experimental light-dark cycles were experienced in the latter case.
Apterous aphids transferred from LD 16:8 h to LD 12:12 h as either third-or fourth-stadium larvae, or young adults, switched for aptera-production to alata-production. The transition form aptera- to alata-production was rather abrupt in third-stadium transfers but more gradual when transfers occurred as fourth-stadium larvae and adults. Moreover, s the number of days required for 50% of the aphids to become alata-producers increased from 7–8 in third-stadium transfers, to 9–10 and 11–12 in the later transfers.  相似文献

Abstract. A technique is described for the three-dimensional analysis of the flight paths of small insects using two video cameras placed alongside each other with the optical axes coincident at a point some distance beyond the area of interest. The video signals were mixed and a time base introduced before recording the superimposed images from both cameras on a single VCR. With suitable lighting and a black background, flying aphids appeared on the monitor as double, bright images on a dark background. The distance between the two images was inversely proportional to the distance of the aphid from the camera lenses. A calibration grid was used to insert the correct parameters into software designed to provide the x (vertical), y (horizontal) and z (distance from the cameras) Cartesian co-ordinates for a flying insect and to calculate the distances flown, flight speed and turning parameters. The advantages of the system are that it is designed for a single VCR and monitor, provides automatic synchrony between camera signals and can examine a larger visual arena than screen-splitting methods. It operates with insects as small as aphids, and wind-tunnel studies on the black bean aphid, Aphis fabae Scop., showed that some flight parameters (for the final one-second approach to a visually attractive landing platform) differed according to whether wind was present or not. Thus, ground speed and distance moved differed significantly but turning parameters were unchanged. In addition, flight trajectory on the approach to landing depended upon initial direction of flight and the presence of wind.  相似文献

Abstract. Winged and wingless individuals of a pink clone of the pea aphid, Acyrthosiphon pisum (Harris), showed differences in the response curves for photoperiodic induction of both males and sexual females (oviparae). The critical night length (CNL) for ovipara induction in winged aphids was 0.75 h shorter than in wingless aphids, whereas the CNL for male induction in winged aphids was 1.0h longer than in wingless aphids. This means that in winged aphids the CNL for male induction in winged aphids was 0.5 h longer than that for ovipara induction, while in wingless aphids the CNL for male induction was 1.0–1.5 h shorter than that for ovipara induction, and also the shapes of the curves differed.
Winged aphids were produced by wingless mothers which were crowded as young adults. However, when young adults were crowded in long nights, winged aphids were not produced, and the CNL for wing inhibition was between 9.5 and 10h. This effect of photoperiod on wing induction was maternal.  相似文献
