Methanol-utilizing yeast,Candida boidini 11 Bh, characterized by high tolerance to methanol during growth, displays even higher tolerance when the oxidation rate
by intact cells is tested. Low respiration activity is found even at 22% v/v of methanol. The half-saturation constant was
17–18mM. The half-saturation constants for the two oxidation intermediates, formaldehyde and formic acid were 3.6–4.0 and
30–33mM, respectively. When applied together with standard concentration of methanol, very low concentrations of both intermediates
stimulated the oxidation rate. These results are discussed in connection with the relationship between growth and oxidation,

The distribution limits ofCrocidura russula (Hermann, 1780) andC. leucodon (Hermann, 1780) were investigated during an interval of 25 years in the bottom of the Rhone valley above Lake Geneva, Switzerland (total data set: 105 spatio-temporal occurrences, 1137 shrews). In 1975, the contact zone between the two species was situated in the region of Martigny. In 1999/2000, new sampling revealed three results: (1) The contact zone showed an upward shift of about 25 km. (2) In the expanded range ofC. russula, the resident species has totally disappeared (confirmed by owl pellets analysis). (3) This demonstrates a dominance ofC. russula overC. leucodon. Three hypotheses which may explain the range expansion ofC. russula were evaluated: (1) habitat modification favouring linear dispersal due to the construction of a highway; (2) temporal event favoured by climate fluctuations, or (3) ongoing postglacial colonisation of Europe. Hypothesis 1 was rejected, because the progression of the shrews anticipated the construction. Hypothesis 3 received only weak support because range limits ofC. russula in the region of Nice have been stable for thousands of years. Forage abundance, forage quality, and social factors are key elements of the foraging ecology of wild herbivores. For non-ruminant
equids, forage-limited environments are likely to impose severe constraints on their foraging behaviour. We used a multi-scale
approach to study foraging behaviour in kiang (Equus kiang), a wild equid inhabiting the high-altitude rangelands of the Tibetan Plateau. Using behavioural observations and vegetation
sampling, we first assessed how patterns of plant abundance and quality affected (i) the instantaneous forage intake rate
(fine scale) and (ii) the proportion of time spent foraging (coarse scale) across seasons. We also tested whether foraging
behaviour differed among group types, between sex in adults, and between females of different reproductive status. At a fine
scale, intake rate increased linearly with bite size and increased following a type II curvilinear function with biomass on
feeding sites. Forage intake rate also increased linearly with plant quality. Male and female kiangs had similar intake rates.
Likewise, gravid and lactating females had similar intake rates as barren and non-lactating females. At a coarse scale, kiangs
spent longer time feeding in mesic than in xeric habitats, and spent more time feeding in early summer and fall than in late
summer. Groups of adults with foals spent less time feeding than male groups and groups of adults without foals. Our findings
suggest that kiangs use flexible foraging behaviours in relation to seasonal variations of vegetation quality and abundance,
a likely outcome of the extreme seasonal conditions encountered on the Tibetan Plateau. 相似文献

Quantifying the evidence for ecological synergies 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
There is increasing concern that multiple drivers of ecological change will interact synergistically to accelerate biodiversity loss. However, the prevalence and magnitude of these interactions remain one of the largest uncertainties in projections of future ecological change. We address this uncertainty by performing a meta-analysis of 112 published factorial experiments that evaluated the impacts of multiple stressors on animal mortality in freshwater, marine and terrestrial communities. We found that, on average, mortalities from the combined action of two stressors were not synergistic and this result was consistent across studies investigating different stressors, study organisms and life-history stages. Furthermore, only one-third of relevant experiments displayed truly synergistic effects, which does not support the prevailing ecological paradigm that synergies are rampant. However, in more than three-quarters of relevant experiments, the outcome of multiple stressor interactions was non-additive (i.e. synergies or antagonisms), suggesting that ecological surprises may be more common than simple additive effects. 相似文献

Tree species differences in crown size and shape are often highlighted as key characteristics determining light interception strategies and successional dynamics. The phenotypic plasticity of species in response to light and space availability suggests that intraspecific variability can have potential consequences on light interception and community dynamics. Species crown size varies depending on site characteristics and other factors at the individual level which differ from competition for light and space. These factors, such as individual genetic characteristics, past disturbances or environmental micro-site effects, combine with competition-related phenotypic plasticity to determine the individual variability in crown size. Site and individual variability are typically ignored when considering crown size and light interception by trees, and residual variability is relegated to a residual error term, which is then ignored when studying ecological processes. In the present study, we structured and quantified variability at the species, site, and individual levels for three frequently used tree allometric relations using fixed and random effects in a hierarchical Bayesian framework. We focused on two species: Abies alba (silver fir) and Picea abies (Norway spruce) in nine forest stands of the western Alps. We demonstrated that species had different allometric relations from site to site and that individual variability accounted for a large part of the variation in allometric relations. Using a spatially explicit radiation transmission model on real stands, we showed that individual variability in tree allometry had a substantial impact on light resource allocation in the forest. Individual variability in tree allometry modulates species’ light-intercepting ability. It generates heterogeneous light conditions under the canopy, with high light micro-habitats that may promote the regeneration of light-demanding species and slow down successional dynamics. 相似文献

Variation in the width of 'safety zones' for sheep and dairy pasture treated with a Sclerotinia sclerotiorum (Lib.) de Bary-based mycoherbicide was quantified using 10 years of climate data from each of five regions in New Zealand. Acceptable and risk-averse zones were defined as the maximum distances in any direction from a treated pasture where 'added:natural' ratios of air-borne S. sclerotiorum spores are 1:1 and 1:10, respectively. The 10-year mean 1:1 safety zone had zero width for sheep pasture at all locations, and was at most, 50 m wide for dairy pasture. The width of the 10-year mean 1:10 zone varied regionally from 314 to 443 m for sheep and from 175 to 280 m for dairy pasture, and the 90th percentile 1:10 zones were up to 41% wider. Linear relationships between safety zone width and mean wind speed were evident and these could be used to derive region-specific safety zones. 相似文献

A non-hydrolysable GTP analogue enhanced the formation of [3H]inositol polyphosphates in permeabilized adrenal glomerulosa cells. Pertussis toxin, which ADP-ribosylated Ni, failed to influence angiotensin-induced formation of 3H-labelled inositol phosphates and the incorporation of [32F]phosphate into phosphatidylinositol and phosphatidic acid. These results show that Ni is present and a G-protein activates phospholipase C also in glomerulosa cells, however, it is not Ni which couples angiotensin receptors to the enzyme. 相似文献

Chloramphenicol (Cm) and its fluorinated derivative florfenicol (Ff) represent highly potent inhibitors of bacterial protein biosynthesis. As a consequence of the use of Cm in human and veterinary medicine, bacterial pathogens of various species and genera have developed and/or acquired Cm resistance. Ff is solely used in veterinary medicine and has been introduced into clinical use in the mid-1990s. Of the Cm resistance genes known to date, only a small number also mediates resistance to Ff. In this review, we present an overview of the different mechanisms responsible for resistance to Cm and Ff with particular focus on the two different types of chloramphenicol acetyltransferases (CATs), specific exporters and multidrug transporters. Phylogenetic trees of the different CAT proteins and exporter proteins were constructed on the basis of a multisequence alignment. Moreover, information is provided on the mobile genetic elements carrying Cm or Cm/Ff resistance genes to provide a basis for the understanding of the distribution and the spread of Cm resistance--even in the absence of a selective pressure imposed by the use of Cm or Ff. 相似文献
