1. We used the freshwater alga Chlorella NC64A (Division Chlorophyta) and its virus Paramecium bursaria Chlorella virus‐1 (PBCV‐1) as a model system to test for potential stoichiometric constraints on a virus–host interaction. 2. Media phosphorus concentrations were manipulated to create Chlorella NC64A host cells with low (91 ± 23) or high (453 ± 246) C : P ratio. In contrast, the C : P ratio of PBCV‐1, calculated from its biochemical composition, was 17 : 1. 3. Stoichiometric theory predicts that infection success and postinfection viral production should be depressed in high C : P cultures due to insufficient intracellular P for production of P‐rich viral particles. 4. Consistent with this hypothesis, viral production was strongly affected by host C : P ratio. While host C : P ratio did not affect viral attachment or the percentage of new viral particles that were infectious, in the low C : P Chlorella NC64A treatment, nine times more viruses were produced per infected cell than in the high C : P treatment (158 ± 138 versus 18 ± 18), indicating that the low C : P cells were higher quality for PBCV‐1 proliferation. 5. This result implies that the stoichiometric quality of algal cells can have a major effect on host–virus population dynamics.  相似文献

Colour has many different functions in animals, such as an involvement in thermoregulation, crypsis, and social interactions. Species capable of physiological colour change may alter their coloration in response to ecological conditions. The Moorish gecko, Tarentola mauritanica, is capable of actively changing its body coloration. In the present study, we investigated colour change in this gecko as a function of background, temperature, and light. Our results demonstrate that the Moorish gecko indeed changes its dorsal colour in response to changes in environmental conditions. By contrast to several other reptilian species, this rapid colour change does not appear to be associated with thermoregulation. Background matching, however, did appear to be a prominent function, although illumination appears to be an essential trigger. Future research should concentrate on individual variation and its effectiveness with respect to antipredatory mechanisms. © 2012 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2012, ?? , ??–??.  相似文献

Abstract Wind has become one of the fastest growing sources of renewable energy worldwide, but widespread and often extensive fatalities of bats have increased concern regarding the impacts of wind energy development on bats and other wildlife. We synthesized available information on patterns of bat fatalities from a review of 21 postconstruction fatality studies conducted at 19 facilities in 5 United States regions and one Canadian province. Dominance of migratory, foliage- and tree-roosting lasiurine species (e.g., hoary bat [Lasiurus cinereus]) killed by turbines was consistent among studies. Bat fatalities, although highly variable and periodic, consistently peaked in late summer and fall, coinciding with migration of lasiurines and other species. A notable exception was documented fatalities of pregnant female Brazilian freetailed bats (Tadarida brasiliensis) in May and June at a facility in Oklahoma, USA, and female silver-haired bats (Lasionycteris noctivagans) during spring in Tennessee, USA, and Alberta, Canada. Most studies reported that fatalities were distributed randomly across turbines at a site, although the highest number of fatalities was often found near the end of turbine strings. Two studies conducted simultaneously in the same region documented similar timing of fatalities between sites, which suggests broader patterns of collisions dictated by weather, prey abundance, or other factors. None of the studies found differences in bat fatalities between turbines equipped with lighting required by the Federal Aviation Administration and turbines that were unlit. All studies that addressed relationships between bat fatalities and weather patterns found that most bats were killed on nights with low wind speed (<6 m/sec) and that fatalities increased immediately before and after passage of storm fronts. Weather patterns may be predictors of bat activity and fatality; thus, mitigation efforts that focus on these high-risk periods could reduce bat fatality substantially. We caution that estimates of bat fatality are conditioned by length of study and search interval and that they are biased in relation to how searcher efficiency, scavenger removal, and habitat differences were or were not accounted for. Our review will assist managers, biologists, and decision-makers with understanding unifying and unique patterns of bat fatality, biases, and limitations of existing efforts, and it will aid in designing future research needed to develop mitigation strategies for minimizing or eliminating bat fatality at wind facilities.  相似文献

We identified and characterized nine microsatellite primer pairs from Fonscochlea accepta, a species of hydrobiid snail endemic to artesian mound springs associated with the Great Artesian Basin in arid South Australia. The loci were highly polymorphic, with five to 30 alleles per locus. Gene diversity, estimated as expected heterozygosity ranged from 0.364 to 0.851, and was generally matched by levels of observed heterozygosity (0.373–0.829). Cross‐species amplification trials with four other hydrobiid species associated with these southern mound springs showed that these primers will be useful for genetic analyses of these other endemic snails.  相似文献

Fifteen polymorphic dinucleotide microsatellite loci were characterized for Erynnis propertius using an enrichment protocol. The number of alleles varied from nine to 28 for a sample of 24 individuals. Observed heterozygosities ranged from 0.25 to 0.96. Homozygote excess was detected for 10 loci. Twelve markers successfully amplified in related Erynnis species and eight loci were polymorphic in at least one other species.  相似文献

Fifteen polymorphic dinucleotide and two trinucleotide microsatellite loci were identified in the Anise swallowtail, Papilio zelicaon, from DNA genomic libraries enriched for simple sequence repeats. Allele numbers varied from eight to 29, with an excess of homozygotes observed for nine loci. This homozygosity is a feature of other lepidopteran microsatellites and is probably due to null alleles. Sixteen markers were amplified successfully in other representatives of Papilio with 11 loci retaining polymorphism in at least one species. These results suggest that the microsatellites reported here may be appropriate for measuring population genetic structure in a number of Papilio species.  相似文献

1. Self‐medication is an ability to consume or otherwise contact biologically active organic compounds specifically for the purpose of helping to clear a (parasitic) infection or reduce its symptoms. Consumption of these compounds may either take place before the infection is contracted (prophylactic consumption) or after the infection is contracted (therapeutic consumption). 2. An important insight is that self‐medication is a form of adaptive plasticity, and as such, consumption of the medicinal substance when uninfected must impose a fitness cost (otherwise the substance would be universally consumed). This distinguishes self‐medication from several closely related phenomena such as microbiome effects or compensatory diet choice. 3. A number of recent studies have convincingly demonstrated self‐medication within several different, distantly‐related, insect taxa. Here I review evidence of self‐medication in the wooly bear caterpillar Grammia incorrupta Edwards, the armyworm Spodoptera Guenée, the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster Meigen, the monarch butterfly Danaus plexippus Kluk, and the honey bee Apis mellifera Linnaeus. 4. These studies show not only that self‐medication is possible, but that the target of the medication behaviour may in some cases be kin rather than self. They also reveal very few general patterns. I therefore end by discussing future prospects within the field of insect self‐medication.  相似文献

Atmospheric concentrations of the greenhouse gas nitrous oxide (N2O) have continued to rise since the advent of the industrial era, largely because of the increase in agricultural land use. The urine deposited by grazing ruminant animals is a major global source of agricultural N2O. With the first commitment period for reducing greenhouse gas emissions under the Kyoto Protocol now underway, mitigation options for ruminant urine N2O emissions are urgently needed. Recent studies showed that increasing the urinary concentration of the minor urine constituent hippuric acid resulted in reduced emissions of N2O from a sandy soil treated with synthetic bovine urine, due to a reduction in denitrification. A similar effect was seen when benzoic acid, a product of hippuric acid hydrolysis, was used. This current laboratory experiment aimed to investigate these effects using real cow urine for the first time. Increased concentrations of hippuric acid or benzoic acid in the urine led to reduction of N2O emissions by 65% (from 17% to <6% N applied), with no difference between the two acid treatments. Ammonia volatilization did not increase significantly with increased hippuric acid or benzoic acid concentrations in the urine applied. Therefore, there was a net reduction in gaseous N loss from the soil with higher urinary concentrations of both hippuric acid and benzoic acid. The results show that elevating hippuric acid in the urine had a marked negative effect on both nitrification and denitrification rates and on subsequent N2O fluxes. This study indicates the potential for developing a novel mitigation strategy based on manipulation of urine composition through ruminant diet.  相似文献

Seeds from ten terrestrial orchid species, nine from the south‐west Australian biodiversity hotspot (Caladenia arenicola, Caladenia flava, Caladenia huegelii, Diuris laxiflora, Microtis media ssp. media, Pterostylis recurva, Pterostylis sanguinea, Thelymitra crinita and Thelymitra macrophylla) and one from south‐east Australia (Diuris fragrantissima), were placed into experimental storage to assess their relative longevity and likely optimal conditions for long‐term conservation seed banking. Seeds from all species were desiccation tolerant, germinating after drying at 23% relative humidity (C. arenicola, C. huegelii, P. sanguinea and T. macrophylla) or 5% relative humidity (C. flava, D. laxiflora, M. media ssp. media, P. recurva and T. crinita) at 23 °C. From automatedly determined moisture adsorption and desorption isotherms at 23 °C, these equate to tolerance of drying to 0.03–0.06 g water g?1 dry weight or 0.013–0.028 g water g?1 dry weight, respectively. Results of storage experiments at a range of moisture contents and temperatures suggest conventional seed bank storage at ?18 °C after equilibration at c. 23% relative humidity (at 23 °C) may be suitable for most of the species, although there was higher germination of P. recurva seeds stored at ?80 °C and of M. media ssp. media seeds equilibrated at 75% relative humidity. However, there was considerable variation in germination of seeds sampled after different storage periods, making it difficult to identify optimal storage conditions definitively. Results of comparative longevity storage experiments at 60% relative humidity and 40 °C suggest seeds from these orchid species are short‐lived compared with non‐orchid species, and with Australian species in particular. © 2010 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society, 2010, 164 , 26–41.  相似文献

1. Non‐indigenous ecosystem engineers can substantially affect native biodiversity by transforming the physical structure of habitats. In the Great Lakes–St. Lawrence River system, introduced dreissenid mussels (Dreissena polymorpha and D. bugensis) and the native benthic macroalga Cladophora act as ecosystem engineers by increasing substratum complexity and providing interstitial habitat for benthic macroinvertebrates. 2. We manipulated the topography and perimeter‐to‐area ratio of patches of dreissenid mussels in a series of colonisation experiments conducted at two sites in the St. Lawrence River. Experimental substrata were variably colonised by Cladophora, prompting us to examine (i) how the topography of Dreissena patches affects benthic macroinvertebrate diversity and (ii) the extent to which the effects of Dreissena are altered by the presence of another habitat‐modifying organism (Cladophora). 3. The results of our first experiment suggested that a patchy distribution of dreissenid mussels is an important driver of benthic diversity at small spatial scales. The results of our second and third experiments suggested that a native habitat engineer, Cladophora, modifies the impact of Dreissena on benthic macroinvertebrate communities. 4. While macroalgal blooms have been linked to the large‐scale impacts of Dreissena on light and nutrient availability, Dreissena shells inhibited Cladophora growth at our experimental scale. These findings demonstrate that the interactions between habitat‐modifying species can complicate efforts to predict the community‐level effects of an invasion.  相似文献
