The yabby, Cherax destructor Clark, is the most widespread species in the most widespread genus of Australian freshwater crayfish. It has a distribution that spans several distinct drainage basins and biogeographical regions within semiarid and arid inland Australia. Here we report a study designed to investigate patterns of genetic variation within the species and hypotheses put forward to account for its extensive distribution using DNA sequences from the mitochondrial 16S rRNA gene region. Results of phylogenetic analyses contradicted previous allozyme data and revealed relatively deep phylogenetic structure in the form of three geographically correlated clades. The degree of genetic divergences between clades (8–15 bp) contrasted with the relatively limited haplotype diversity within clades (1–3 bp). Network-based analyses confirmed these results and revealed genetic structure on both larger and more restricted geographical scales. Nevertheless some haplotypes and 1-step clades had large distributions, some of which crossed boundaries between river basins and aquatic biogeographical regions. Thus both older and more recent historical processes, including fragmentation on a larger geographical scale and more recent range expansion on a local scale, appear to be responsible for the observed pattern of genetic variation within C. destructor . Responses of the mycorrhizal fungal community in terrestrial ecosystems to global change factors are not well understood. However, virtually all land plants form symbiotic associations with mycorrhizal fungi, with approximately 20% of the plants' net primary production transported down to the fungal symbionts. In this study, we investigated how ericoid mycorrhiza (ErM), fine endophytes (FE) and dark septate endophytes (DSE) in roots responded to elevated atmospheric CO2 concentrations and warming in the dwarf shrub understory of a birch forest in the subarctic region of northern Sweden. To place the belowground results into an ecosystem context we also investigated how plant cover and nutrient concentrations in leaves responded to elevated atmospheric CO2 concentrations and warming. The ErM colonization in ericaceous dwarf shrubs increased under elevated atmospheric CO2 concentrations, but did not respond to warming following 6 years of treatment. This suggests that the higher ErM colonization under elevated CO2 might be due to increased transport of carbon belowground to acquire limiting resources such as N, which was diluted in leaves of ericaceous plants under enhanced CO2. The elevated CO2 did not affect total plant cover but the plant cover was increased under warming, which might be due to increased N availability in soil. FE colonization in grass roots decreased under enhanced CO2 and under warming, which might be due to increased root growth, to which the FE fungi could not keep up, resulting in proportionally lower colonization. However, no responses in aboveground cover of Deschampsia flexuosa were seen. DSE hyphal colonization in grass roots significantly increased under warmer conditions, but did not respond to elevated CO2. This complex set of responses by mycorrhizal and other root‐associated fungi to global change factors of all the fungal types studied could have broad implications for plant community structure and biogeochemistry of subarctic ecosystems.  相似文献

Although male ornaments may provide benefits to individuals bearing them, such structures may also entail fitness costs. Selection should favour aspects of the phenotype that act to reduce such costs, yet such compensatory traits are often ignored in studies of sexual selection. If a male ornament increases predation risk via reduced locomotor performance, then there may be selection for changes in morphological traits to compensate for behavioural or biomechanical changes in how individuals use their morphology (or both). We took a comparative approach aiming to test whether changes in wing beat frequency are evolutionarily correlated with increases in male ornamentation across stalk‐eyed fly species. Previous studies have shown that increased male eye span is evolutionarily correlated with increased wing size; thus, we tested whether there is additional compensation via increases in size‐adjusted wing beat frequency. The results obtained revealed that relative wing beat frequency is negatively related to relative eye span in males, and sexual dimorphism in wing beat frequency is negatively related to dimorphism in eye span. These findings, in addition to our finding that eye span dimorphism is positively related to aspect ratio dimorphism, suggest that male stalk‐eyed flies compensate primarily by increasing wing size and shape, which may then have resulted in the subsequent evolutionary reduction in wing beat frequency. Thus, exaggerated ornaments can result in evolutionary modifications in wing morphology, which in turn lead to adjustments in flapping kinematics, illustrating the tight envelope of trade‐offs when compensating for exaggerated ornaments. © 2011 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2011, 104 , 670–679.  相似文献

Seeds with a water‐impermeable seed coat and a physiologically dormant embryo are classified as having combinational dormancy. Seeds of Sicyos angulatus (burcucumber) have been clearly shown to have a water‐impermeable seed coat (physical dormancy [PY]). The primary aim of the present study was to confirm (or not) that physiological dormancy (PD) is also present in seeds of S. angulatus. The highest germination of scarified fresh (38%) and 3‐month dry‐stored (36%) seeds occurred at 35/20°C. The rate (speed) of germination was faster in scarified dry‐stored seeds than in scarified fresh seeds. Removal of the seed coat, but leaving the membrane surrounding the embryo intact, increased germination of both fresh and dry‐stored seeds to > 85% at 35/20°C. Germination (80–100%) of excised embryos (both seed coat and membrane removed) occurred at 15/6, 25/15 and 35/20°C and reached 95–100% after 4 days of incubation at 25/15 and 35/20°C. Dry storage (after‐ripening) caused an increase in the germination percentage of scarified and of decoated seeds at 25/15°C and in both germination percentage and rate of excised embryos at 15/6°C. Eight weeks of cold stratification resulted in a significant increase in the germination of scarified seeds at 25/15 and 35/20°C and of decoated seeds at 15/6 and 25/15°C. Based on the results of our study and on information reported in the literature, we conclude that seeds of S. angulatus not only have PY, but also non‐deep PD, that is, combinational dormancy (PY + PD).  相似文献

A cytochemical study of esterase activity of tomato cultivars resistant (VFN8) and susceptible (Roma) to the root-knot nematode Meloidogyne incognita has shown activity present in root tissue of both cultivars. Inhibitor studies indicated the likely involvement of carboxy- and acetyl-esterases as components in the prostele and cortical cells of cv. Roma 1, 2, and 3 days after nematode infestation. In contrast, necrotic cells immediately adjacent to the nematode in roots of VFN8 were seen to contain high levels of phenolics by 3 days after infection with the adjacent cells having high levels of carboxylesterase activity. The possible role of the enzyme in the hypersensitive response of tomato plants during nematode infection is discussed.  相似文献
