Parasites and the avian spleen: helminths   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4  
A comparative analysis of the relationship between the spleen–a major organ of immunity and helminths was undertaken with bird species, using the phylogenetic regression technique. Species in which many individuals are infected with nematodes relative to the number of individuals examined for the presence of helminths (termed 'relative nematode presence') have significantly larger spleens, for a given body weight, in females (though not in males). There was little indication that this relationship depends on incidental ecological indices, the weights of other organs, or the 'relative presences' of trematodes, cestodes or haematozoa. Combined with previous, experimental, work it suggests that the avian spleen is important in resisting nematodes. Body weight is correlated with the relative presence of helminths; but even after removing body size effects, bird species which tend to be infected with trematodes are also more likely to be infected with cestodes. This paper indicates that the spleens of wild bird species are associated with macroparasites in the natural environment.  相似文献

Abstract Etiolated hypocotyls from normal tomato plants show a negative gravitropic response within 20 min of stimulation. In contrast, etiolated hypocotyls from the gravitropic mutant Lazy-l do not reorientate after gravistimulation. Etiolated hypocotyls from both types of plant are positively phototropic, however, Lazy-l seedlings achieve a greater final angle of bending following phototropic stimulation compared to normal plants. Anatomical studies reveal that etiolated hypocotyls from normal plants contain sedimenting amyloplasts located within the endodermal cells. Such sedimenting amyloplasts are absent in Lazy-l tissue. It is hypothesized that the hypocotyl of Lazy-l is agravitropic since it is unable to perceive a gravistimulus.  相似文献

1. Groundwater fluxes of nitrogen and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) were investigated in Grape Vine Canyon Stream in the Mojave Desert focusing on the rate of inputs and the fate of groundwater-derived nutrients in the stream. Discharge rates from different ground waters were measured using an end-member mixing model coupled with injections of a conservative solute tracer into the stream channel.
2. In surface water, nitrate concentration averaged 1.13 mg N L–1 and DOC concentration averaged 1.82 mg C L–1.
3. Groundwater discharge into Grape Vine Canyon Stream was derived from three sources. Nitrate concentration varied among the three groundwater sources with mean concentrations of 0.56, 0.94 and 0.08 mg N L–1. DOC, in contrast, did not vary among ground water sources, with an overall average concentration of 2.96 mg C L–1.
4. In the surface stream, nitrate concentration was two-fold greater than the concentration predicted from groundwater input, indicating that in-stream processes generated nitrate. Stream DOC concentration was lower than predicted based upon groundwater input rate. The production of nitrate and loss of DOC suggest that DOC is lost through mineralisation of dissolved organic matter, possibly resulting in the mineralisation of dissolved organic nitrogen to ammonium and subsequent transformation to nitrate via nitrification. In further support of this hypothesised linkage, DOC loss explained 80–89% of the variance in nitrate production in Grape Vine Canyon Stream.  相似文献

Terrestrial adaptations by small, desmognathine salamanders in Appalachian stream communities have been viewed as evolved responses to large, aquatic, predatory congeners. We tested the role of moisture in the development of adaptive phenotypes in the small, semiterrestrial Desmognathus ocoee . We measured indicators of relative terrestrial vs. aquatic phenotypes (i.e. tolerance of desiccation, anatomical depression of body/tail) using individuals from stream habitats having different flow regimes within each of three geographical locations. Salamanders from intermittent, first-order streams exhibited greater desiccation tolerance, took longer to reach tolerance limits, and had more anatomically depressed bodies/tails than those from second-order, perennial streams, regardless of location. Phenotypes of salamanders from second-order streams showed aquatic tendencies. Phenotypic variation was consistent with relative habitat stability and not with relative abundance of large congeners. MtDNA analysis revealed that individuals grouped together based on geographical location and not habitat type, implying that the observed phenotypic differences arose in situ at each geographical location. Recent phylogenetic reconstructions of the Desmognathus indicate that large, aquatic forms are derived, and their appearance corresponds with the late Cenozoic development of modern Appalachian topography. We propose that radiation of desmognathine lifestyles and associated phenotypes tracked the formation of moisture-stability gradients associated with the creation of cool, wet, montane habitats.  © 2007 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2007, 91 , 227–238.  相似文献

Flowers of Liparia parva from which rodents were excluded had lower seed‐set than open flowers. The rodent Acomys subspinosus was captured in the vicinity of this plant species and captures had substantial numbers of L. parva pollen in their scats. Captured individuals of A. subspinosus visited L. parva flowers in tanks and removed standard petals to obtain the nectar. Typical of rodent‐pollinated species, L. parva, flowered in winter and flowers mostly opened in the evenings and the stigma‐nectar distance was about 10 mm. This is the first evidence for rodent pollination in the large cosmopolitan family, the Fabaceae.  相似文献

1. Adaptive divergence in sympatry is supposed to be inhibited by the homogenizing role of gene flow. However, studies continue to uncover examples of sympatric divergence. In this study, two divergent phenotypes in a complex of four syntopic gall midge morphotypes [nominally Asteromyia carbonifera Osten Saken, Diptera: Cecidomyiidae: Alycaulini] are characterised. The first is a behavioural phenotype governing within‐host tissue preference and the second is a trait governing accessory‐gland carotenoid quality and quantity. 2. One gall morphotype (crescents) lay most of their eggs on mature tissue whereas the other three gall morphotypes oviposit only on young emerging leaves. Ecological maintenance of this divergent trait appears to be driven by enemy‐reduced space. That is, nearly 40% of the crescent morphotype galls that develop high on the plant are attacked by the egg parasitoid Platygaster solidaginis Ashmed, whereas those low on the plant are relatively protected. 3. All morphotypes contain carotenoids in their accessory glands, but the quality and quantity of these pigments differs significantly between the morphotypes and is positively associated with the probability of parasitism by P. solidaginis. 4. Larval salivary glands also contain carotenoids and the plant hormone abscisic acid, which in plants is synthesized from carotenoid precursors and is involved in regulating plant defences. This hormone may facilitate gall development and influence gall morphology. 5. Ecological fitness trade‐offs between carotenoids, parasitoid attack, and plant resistance may be fostering adaptive divergence in ovipositional phenotypes and sympatric speciation in this complex of gall midge morphotypes.  相似文献

Medical tourism (MT) can be conceptualized as the intentional pursuit of non‐emergency surgical interventions by patients outside their nation of residence. Despite increasing popular interest in MT, the ethical issues associated with the practice have thus far been under‐examined. MT has been associated with a range of both positive and negative effects for medical tourists' home and host countries, and for the medical tourists themselves. Absent from previous explorations of MT is a clear argument of how responsibility for the harms of this practice should be assigned. This paper addresses this gap by describing both backward looking liability and forward looking political responsibility for stakeholders in MT. We use a political responsibility model to develop a decision‐making process for individual medical tourists and conclude that more information on the effects of MT must be developed to help patients engage in ethical MT.  相似文献
