Millhouse, J. and Strother, S. 1987. Further characteristicsof salt-dependent bicarbonate use by the seagrass Zostera muelleri.J.exp. Bot. 38: 10551068. The contribution of HCO3to photosynthetic O2 evolutionin the seagrass Zostera muelleri Irmisch ex Aschers. increasedwith increasing salinity of the bathing seawater when the inorganiccarbon concentration was kept constant. K1/2 (seawater salts)for HCO3 -dependent photosynthesis was 66% of seawatersalinity. Both short- and long-term pretreatment at low salinitiesstimulated photosynthesis in full strength seawater. Twentyfour hours pre-incubation of seagrass plants in 3·0 molm3 NaHCO3 resulted in increased photosynthesis at allsalinities, apparently due to stimulation of HCO3 use(K1/2 (seawater salts) = 26%). Vmax (HCO3) was not affectedby low salinity pretreatment. The kinetics of HCO3 stimulationby the major seawater cations was investigated. Ca2+ was themost effective cation with the highest Vmax (HCO3) andwith K1/2(Ca2+) = 14 mol m3. Mg2+ was also very effectiveat less than 50 mol m3 but higher concentrations wereinhibitory. This inhibition cannot be accounted for solely byprecipitation of MgCO3. Na+ and K+ were both capable of stimulatingHCO3 use. Stimulation was in two distinct parts. Up to500 mol m3, both citrate and chloride salts gave similarresults (K1/2(Na+) 81 mol m3, Vmax(HCO3) 0·26µmol O2 mg1 chl min1), but use of citratesalts above 500 mol m2 caused a second stimulation ofHCO3 use (K1/2(Na+) 830 mol m3, Vmax(HCO3)0·68 µmol O2 mg1 chl min1). Vmax(HCO3)for the second-phase Na+ or K+ stimulation was of the same orderas for Ca2+-stimulated HCO3 use. To further characterizesalt-dependent HCO3 use, the sensitivity of photosynthesisto Tris and TES buffers was investigated. The effects of Trisappear to be due to the action of Tris+ causing stimulationof HCO3 -dependent photosynthesis in the absence of salt, but inhibition of HCO3 use in saline media. TES has noeffect on photosynthesis. External carbonic anhydrase, althoughimplicated in salt-dependent HCO3 use in Z. muelleri, could not be detected in whole leaves. Key words: Zostera muelleri, HCO3 use, salinity 相似文献

Abstract Seed production in the endemic New Zealand mistletoe Peraxilla tetrapetala (Loranthaceae) has been shown to be consistently pollen limited, but to date there has been no test of whether the species is also seed limited. If it is not seed limited, then pollen limitation may have no effect on population size. We tested for seed limitation by sowing seeds onto host trees at high and low densities at two sites, and following survival for up to 69 months. Our rationale was that unless there is strong density‐dependent seedling mortality sufficient to negate increases in seed supply, the species would be seed limited. We simultaneously measured pollen limitation at both sites using pollen augmentation. Peraxilla tetrapetala was strongly pollen limited at both sites over 7 years at Ohau (mean Pollen Limitation Index 0.62), and 12 years at Craigieburn (mean PLI 0.44), before and during the seed‐limitation study. There was no significant overall negative effect of density on survival in sown P. tetrapetala seeds over 42–69 months. There was a significant positive effect: seeds were more likely to adhere to branches when sown at high densities. This initial advantage to high‐density seeds was gradually eroded by slightly (but non‐significantly) lower survival rates of adhered seeds at high density. By the end of the study there was no significant difference in overall survival in high and low density plantings. This means that P. tetrapetala was apparently both pollen limited and seed limited at both our sites. Hence, reduced densities of native bird pollinators caused by introduced mammalian carnivores are likely to reduce the density of adult mistletoes in the next generation. However, the generality of this result may be affected by the fact that mistletoes do not have a dense ‘seedling shadow’ under the parent mistletoe. 相似文献

1. Plants can respond to herbivore damage with phenotypically plastic changes in quality that negatively affect herbivores and prevent subsequent attack – induced defences. 2. The present study tested whether trees respond to herbivory with localised induction, and whether life‐history traits and disease resistance of an insect herbivore are altered on induced branches of the trees. 3. The influences of localised, within‐branch, herbivore‐induced changes in red alder trees (Alnus rubra Bong.) on fitness characteristics of western tent caterpillars (Malacosoma californicum pluviale Dyar) were evaluated. In the field, randomly selected branches of trees were infested with tent caterpillar larvae and the adjacent branches were maintained as non‐infested controls. In the laboratory, larvae were fed leaves from either induced or non‐induced branches through to adult emergence. A second cohort of larvae was challenged with a viral pathogen to compare their disease susceptibility on induced versus non‐induced foliage. 4. Herbivore‐induced, localised responses of damaged branches reduced leaf quality for growth and the fecundity of female western tent caterpillars, but not that of males. Larvae fed induced leaves had a higher survival overall and a reduced mortality due to unidentified non‐viral pathogens than did their counterparts on non‐induced leaves. However, there was no influence of leaf quality on baculovirus‐induced mortality. 5. These findings suggest that localised induced changes in leaf quality could potentially influence populations of tent caterpillars in contradictory ways by reducing their growth rate and fecundity to a modest degree, while improving their survival and resistance to unidentified non‐viral pathogens to a larger extent. 相似文献

1. When populations of herbivorous insects increase in density, they can alter the quantity or quality of their food. The impacts of diet‐related stressors on insect fitness have been investigated singly, but not simultaneously. 2. Foliage quantity and quality of red alder, Alnus rubra, were manipulated together with the presence of non‐entomopathogenic phylloplane bacteria to investigate their impacts, singly and in combination, on survival, pupal mass, growth rate, fecundity and egg quality of a cyclic forest insect, the western tent caterpillar, Malacosoma californicum pluviale. 3. Food limitation (half food) had strong negative impacts on all life‐history traits. When the larvae were fed continuously, however, neither ingesting phylloplane bacteria nor eating leaves from damaged branches (induced foliage) affected survival. In the half‐food treatment, ingesting bacteria further increased mortality, while feeding on induced foliage improved survival. 4. Growth rate and pupal mass of both sexes were reduced for larvae with food limitation compared with continuously fed insects and this was exacerbated when the larvae also ate bacteria‐treated leaves. A combination of bacteria and induced foliage also reduced larval growth rate by 5% in the full‐food treatment. 5. Fecundity (eggs per egg mass) was 2.7 times greater in full‐food than in food‐limited treatments but neither phylloplane bacteria nor plant induction had an effect. Insects fed induced foliage produced smaller eggs. Overall, there was no evidence of a three‐way interaction between the three stressors, although there were negative synergistic effects, primarily between food limitation and the ingestion of phylloplane bacteria. 相似文献

Food web analyses have been fundamental in understanding community organization and ecosystem functioning. To date, a number of studies demonstrate that stream food webs depend to a large extent on allochthonous detritus, but there are more recent studies that show a high degree of autochthony. Our food‐web study was carried out in three Andean rivers (Coilaco, Guampoe and Trancura) within the catchment area of Toltén River in southern Chile. Based on the analyses of 4251 invertebrate gut contents, we found that these Andean stream food webs are dominated by herbivores (range: 50–73% of all species) supported by a species‐rich algal (basal) component, and characterized by a low proportion of omnivores (range: 8–27% of all species) and predatory species (range: 10–24%). Significant differences in the number of feeding links of the herbivores Meridialis diguillina and Antarctoperla michaelseni and the omnivore Smicridea chilensis were found between seasons. The spring herbivore Aubertoperla sp. showed significant differences between rivers. S. chilensis fed on 50 different prey items as compared with the herbivores whose maximum number of links ranged between 37 and 40. Web sizes ranged between 93 and 131 species and the proportion of top species was distinctly lower than those of basal (up to 0.651 in Coilaco River) and intermediate species. Direct connectance (links per species2) values were low and similar among rivers (range: 0.051–0.074), whereas mean food chain length ranged between 2.23 and 2.90. The distributions of web property values from the Andean rivers differed from those previously published. In contrast to previous predictions, mean food chain length in these Andean streams displayed a scale‐invariant pattern across different web sizes, but it was significantly related to the proportion of intermediate species. 相似文献

Twenty‐six microsatellite loci have been isolated from a dugong (Dugong dugon). The average heterozygosity was 0.52 with two to 10 alleles per locus surveyed from 50 individuals. The markers are suitable for genetic mark–recapture (PID = 5 × 10?16) in dugongs and they could also be used to quantify physical tag loss, estimate relatedness, assign paternity, elucidate population structure and identify migrants. The loci also amplified in Florida manatees (22/26) and Asian elephants (6/26). 相似文献

An immunostimulatory factor was identified to be secreted by antigen-pulsed macrophages. This factor was able to induce the generation of antigen specific T helper lymphocytes in vitro as well as in vivo.Further in vitro experiments testing for the genetic restriction of this factor indicated that it is a geneticallyrestricted antigen specific factor (ASF).The Cunningham plaque assay was used to quantify the generation of T helper lymphocytes by measuring the number of plaque forming cells after sequential incubations of antigen-qulsed macrophages with T lymphocytes, and then spleen cells, and finally the TNP-coated sheep red blood cells. 相似文献
