Abstract Wind has become one of the fastest growing sources of renewable energy worldwide, but widespread and often extensive fatalities of bats have increased concern regarding the impacts of wind energy development on bats and other wildlife. We synthesized available information on patterns of bat fatalities from a review of 21 postconstruction fatality studies conducted at 19 facilities in 5 United States regions and one Canadian province. Dominance of migratory, foliage- and tree-roosting lasiurine species (e.g., hoary bat [Lasiurus cinereus]) killed by turbines was consistent among studies. Bat fatalities, although highly variable and periodic, consistently peaked in late summer and fall, coinciding with migration of lasiurines and other species. A notable exception was documented fatalities of pregnant female Brazilian freetailed bats (Tadarida brasiliensis) in May and June at a facility in Oklahoma, USA, and female silver-haired bats (Lasionycteris noctivagans) during spring in Tennessee, USA, and Alberta, Canada. Most studies reported that fatalities were distributed randomly across turbines at a site, although the highest number of fatalities was often found near the end of turbine strings. Two studies conducted simultaneously in the same region documented similar timing of fatalities between sites, which suggests broader patterns of collisions dictated by weather, prey abundance, or other factors. None of the studies found differences in bat fatalities between turbines equipped with lighting required by the Federal Aviation Administration and turbines that were unlit. All studies that addressed relationships between bat fatalities and weather patterns found that most bats were killed on nights with low wind speed (<6 m/sec) and that fatalities increased immediately before and after passage of storm fronts. Weather patterns may be predictors of bat activity and fatality; thus, mitigation efforts that focus on these high-risk periods could reduce bat fatality substantially. We caution that estimates of bat fatality are conditioned by length of study and search interval and that they are biased in relation to how searcher efficiency, scavenger removal, and habitat differences were or were not accounted for. Our review will assist managers, biologists, and decision-makers with understanding unifying and unique patterns of bat fatality, biases, and limitations of existing efforts, and it will aid in designing future research needed to develop mitigation strategies for minimizing or eliminating bat fatality at wind facilities.  相似文献

1. The aerial surface of plants is a habitat for large and diverse microbial communities; termed the phyllosphere. These microbes are unavoidably consumed by herbivores, and while the entomopathogens are well studied, the impact of non‐pathogenic bacteria on herbivore life history is less clear. 2. Previous work has suggested that consumption of non‐entomopathogenic bacteria induces a costly immune response that might decrease the risk of infection. However, we hypothesised that insect herbivores should be selective in how they respond to commonly encountered non‐pathogenic bacteria on their host plants to avoid unnecessary and costly immune responses. 3. An ecologically realistic scenario was used in which we fed cabbage looper, Trichoplusia ni Hübner, larvae on cabbage or cucumber leaves treated with the common non‐entomopathogenic phyllosphere bacteria, Pseudomonas fluorescens and P. syringae. Their constitutive immunity and resistance to a pathogenic bacterium (Bacillus thuringiensis; Bt) and a baculovirus (T. ni single nucleopolyhedrovirus) were then examined. 4. While feeding on bacteria‐treated leaves reduced the growth rate and condition of T. ni, there was no effect on immunity (haemolymph antibacterial and phenoloxidase activities and haemocyte numbers). Phyllosphere bacteria weakly affected the resistance of T. ni to Bt but the direction of this effect was concentration dependent; resistance to the virus was unaffected. Host plant had an impact, with cucumber‐fed larvae being more susceptible to Bt. 5. The lack of evidence for a costly immune response to non‐entomopathogenic bacteria suggests that T. ni are probably adapted to consuming common phyllosphere bacteria, and highlights the importance of the evolutionary history of participants in multi‐trophic interactions.  相似文献

Abstract The flowers of two species of threatened New Zealand mistletoes (Peraxilla tetrapetala and Peraxilla colensoi, Loranthaceae) have explosive buds that do not open unless force is applied by birds or two species of native short‐tongued bees. Opened flowers are visited by a variety of birds and insects. Although both species of Peraxilla conform to a pollination syndrome of ornithophily, bees may be effective alternative pollinators. We investigated the effectiveness of bees and birds as pollinators of P. colensoi at one site and P. tetrapetala at two sites in the South Island. Bees and other insects outnumbered birds as flower visitors at all three sites. By excluding birds with wire cages, we showed that two bee species regularly open flowers of P. tetrapetala, but only rarely open flowers of P. colensoi. Few pollen grains were deposited when either birds or bees opened buds, so opening buds was not by itself sufficient for adequate pollination. Instead, pollen continued to accumulate over the next 6 or 7 days, even inside cages that excluded birds. Both populations of P. tetrapetala were regularly pollen‐limited, but in different ways. At Ohau, opened flowers gained enough pollen to produce seeds, but many buds were not opened and hence failed to set seed. In contrast, at Craigieburn, nearly all buds were opened, but many of these did not receive enough pollen. These results demonstrate that native bees can partially replace birds as pollinators of mistletoes, despite their apparent ornithophilous syndrome. Ongoing reductions in New Zealand forest bird numbers means that the service bees provide may be important for the long‐term future of these plants.  相似文献

Genetic mark–recapture requires efficient methods of uniquely identifying individuals. ‘Shadows’ (individuals with the same genotype at the selected loci) become more likely with increasing sample size, and bias harvest rate estimates. Finding loci is costly, but better loci reduce analysis costs and improve power. Optimal microsatellite panels minimize shadows, but panel design is a complex optimization process. locuseater and shadowboxer permit power and cost analysis of this process and automate some aspects, by simulating the entire experiment from panel design to harvest rate estimation.  相似文献

Studies on Fagus sylvatica show that growth in populations toward the southern limit of this species' distribution is limited strongly by drought. Warming temperatures in the Mediterranean region are expected to exacerbate drought where they are not accompanied by increases in precipitation. We studied levels of annual growth in mature F. sylvatica trees over the last half‐century in the Montseny Mountains in Catalonia (northeast Spain). Our results show significantly lower growth of mature trees at the lower limit of this species' distribution when compared with trees at higher altitudes. Growth at the lower Fagus limit is characterized by a rapid recent decline starting in approximately 1975. By 2003, growth of mature trees had fallen by 49% when compared with predecline levels. This is not an age‐related phenomenon, nor is it seen in comparable populations at higher altitudes. Analysis of climate‐growth relationships suggests that the observed decline in growth is a result of warming temperatures and that, as precipitation in the region has not increased, precipitation is now insufficient to ameliorate the negative effects of increased temperatures on tree growth. As the climate‐response of the studied forest is comparable with that of F. sylvatica forests in other southern European regions, it is possible that this growth decline is a more widespread phenomenon. Warming temperatures may lead to a rapid decline in the growth of range‐edge populations and a consequent retreat of the species distribution in southern Europe. Assessment of long‐term growth trends across the southern range edge of F. sylvatica therefore merits further attention.  相似文献

The ability of plants to recover from freeze‐thaw injury is a critical component of freeze‐thaw stress tolerance. To investigate the molecular basis of freeze‐thaw recovery, here we compared the proteomes of onion scales from unfrozen control (UFC), freeze‐thaw injured (INJ), and post‐thaw recovered (REC) treatments. Injury‐related proteins (IRPs) and recovery‐related proteins (RRPs) were differentiated according to their accumulation patterns. Many IRPs decreased right after thaw without any significant re‐accumulation during post‐thaw recovery, while others were exclusively induced in INJ tissues. Most IRPs are antioxidants, stress proteins, molecular chaperones, those induced by physical injury or proteins involved in energy metabolism. Taken together, these observations suggest that while freeze‐thaw compromises the constitutive stress protection and energy supply in onion scales, it might also recruit ‘first‐responders’ (IRPs that were induced) to mitigate such injury. RRPs, on the other hand, are involved in the injury‐repair program during post‐thaw environment conducive for recovery. Some RRPs were restored in REC tissues after their first reduction right after thaw, while others exhibit higher abundance than their ‘constitutive’ levels. RRPs might facilitate new cellular homeostasis, potentially by re‐establishing ion homeostasis and proteostasis, cell‐wall remodelling, reactive oxygen species (ROS) scavenging, defence against possible post‐thaw infection, and regulating the energy budget to sustain these processes.  相似文献

1. Land clearing in Australia's southwest has led to widespread salinisation of aquatic ecosystems. Four different ecological regimes (clear, submerged macrophyte‐dominated; clear, benthic microbial community‐dominated; turbid, phytoplankton‐dominated; and turbid, sediment‐dominated) have previously been identified in the salinising wetlands of this region. 2. Monitoring data from seven saline wetlands over an 18‐month period were used to evaluate whether a continuum, simple threshold or alternative regimes conceptual model (sensu Hydrobiologia, 200/201, 1990, 367; Hydrobiologia, 200/201, 1990, 475) most appropriately represented transitions between these ecological regimes. We also aimed to identify whether factors other than salinity played a major role in defining ecological regimes or causing shifts between them. 3. Ordination of biological variables revealed a separation of benthic microbial community‐dominated from submerged macrophyte‐dominated sites and times. The mean salinities of these two groups were very similar, suggesting that a salinity threshold was not responsible for benthic microbial versus macrophyte dominance. No other environmental variable was found to have a strong, direct influence on the groupings. 4. The dynamics of regime change in saline wetlands appear not to be driven by any single variable, but by the combined effects of salinity and water regime on species life histories and competitive abilities. Macrophytes were powerful competitors, able to germinate and establish under a range of salinities, turbidities and water depths, and were favoured by seasonal drying. 5. Data from the seven wetlands indicated that the continuum, simple threshold and alternative regimes conceptual models did not appropriately represent transitions between ecological regimes in seasonally drying wetlands. Macrophyte and benthic microbial regimes occurred at overlapping salinity levels, excluding both the continuum and threshold models, and the regular occurrence of drying appeared to preclude the alternative regimes model. Drying prevented the development of strong positive feedback mechanisms, which might otherwise have maintained the benthic microbial community‐dominated regime. We hypothesise that an alternative regimes model might still be valid for salinising ecosystems holding permanent water.  相似文献

Abstract We investigated whether the New Zealand pigeon Hemiphaga novaeseelandiae (Columbidae) exhibits size‐based preferences for fruits. We tested the hypothesis that in small‐fruited species, pigeons would prefer larger fruits, but in larger‐fruited species, this preference would reverse as the pigeons become increasingly limited by their gape size. We collected undispersed fruits and bird‐dispersed seeds of 10 plant species, some over several sites or years (13 datasets in total). We estimated the fruit size of dispersed seeds by fitting regressions of fruit diameter to seed diameter in intact fruits. We were able to predict fruit diameter from seed diameter in 12 of the 13 populations, although the relationship was stronger in single‐seeded species than in multi‐seeded species. Seven of the 12 populations tested showed a significant difference in seed diameter among undispersed and dispersed seeds. However, our results showed no consistent pattern in fruit size preference by the New Zealand pigeon and did not support our hypothesis. The large‐bodied New Zealand pigeon is generally not gape limited and fruit size preferences appear to be independent of mean fruit size.  相似文献

All amphibians are thought to possess two distinct types of dermal gland: mucous and granular. Mucous glands typically produce an acidic, flocculent and carbohydrate positive secretion that keeps skin moist and helps maintain homeostasis. In this study, we use a battery of histochemical tests to identify these traditional mucous glands in the dermis of the plethodontid salamander Ensatina eschscholtzii . The periodic acid-Schiff, alcian blue, toluidine blue and carmine reactions reveal the absence of both acidic glycosaminoglycans and traditional mucous glands. Instead, E. eschscholtzii produces neutral mucus in specialized granular glands, which we name mucus-producing granular glands (MPGGs).
